Yeah, I don't feel like anyone would go running out and talk about this on the internet if it really happened. It just runs the risk get people coming out of the woodwork claiming the sale was bad and/or they were the rightful owner. They would lose but it would tie you up for a while and end up costing you legal fees. The correct move would be to just discretely contact an expert for verification and then find someone to broker the sale if you wanted to cash out. That said, depending on the size of the estate and situation with heirs, I would probably have too much guilt if I actually bought this for $200.
@ipullstuffapart
@ipullstuffapart 19 күн бұрын
Not uncommon to find crazy good deals at estate sales. People want stuff gone and fast, they don't have time to wait for the right buyer or to have items valued - they are moving fast. Don't underestimate the average person's negligance to not spend the time first identifying what they have but then checking what it is online, and then checking if it's legitimate or not. The average person probably couldn't tell you what a Gibson is, it's like people who aren't parents knowing what brand of baby stroller is expensive.

Heard Dusty Hill from ZZ Top tell a story like that. Him and Billy Gibbons were in a pawn shop that had a 53 Fender P Bass and the shop had no idea what they had. Dusty let Billy negotiate the price and Gibbons got the shop down to $70. Hill was hurrying up to pay so they could get out of there before something went wrong and Gibbons stops him at the cash register and tells the shop they had to throw in the case to close the deal. He got the case, and that bass was apparently his favorite for the rest of his career.

Added an EMG GZR, Badass II & Gotohs for around $350 all in. Dumpster dived the case from the Santa Monica GC. Kenny from Performance confirmed its lineage (in other words, he made it), so, not too bad. The "cool story bro" origin just means I'll never sell it.

20yrs ago, A friend of a friend in Montreal, (who was into buying old guitars and repairing them to resell them on ebay) bought an old Les Paul from a guy in provincial Quebec for 1000$. It was left over from the seller's dad in really bad shape (the bridge was broken and put back in place by nailing ordinary nails into the body of the guitar). When he showed the pictures with the serial no. to his repairman "expert guy" he recomended that he shouldnt change much, or as little as possible on that guitar, because it's the first ever series of LP's from 1952. One of those guitars (with a broken headstock that was glued back) sold for 100k$ on ebay at the time). And this guitar eventually sold on ebay for quarter million $.

Set your sights a little differently if you want to get a score. 10 years ago, I had a Peavey T-40 bass in extremely good condition with original case come to my shop as a trade in offer. With a peavey amp, I think I gave a low market value of $300. I hit it before the T-40 and T-60's became "cool again" and now there's way more value there than I started with. Often people want to know that their guitar that they love, but can't play anymore, will go to a good home where it will be respected.... deals are to be had that way.

This, of course, raises the question, “Is it ethical or moral to knowingly pay so little for a very valuable item if the seller doesn’t really know what they have?” Some widow is selling her husband’s “old guitar”. She says, “He bought that thing new back in the 50s, and he played it for a few months until he hurt his hand at the factory. I always wanted him to get rid of it because it was just taking up space in my clothes closet, but he kept it around even though it was in the way. Now that he’s gone, I knew that was one of the first things that had to go. I TT honk he paid about $300 for it, would you give me $225?” You know with certainty that this is a very valuable original 195X ______ in perfect condition. Do you have a moral/ethical obligation to let her know that she could find a buyer who would pay six figures for it? Or, can you feel justified in handing over the $225 and making a break for the door?

Personally, not that I am some kind of adjudicator of morality, far from it actually, but I wouldn't be able to buy it with a clear conscience; mostly because I truly believe in karma and I wouldn't want to bring that into my life. It would be a bit like if someone was walking in front of me and dropped a $100 bill and didn't realize, I could easily pick it up, put it in my pocket, but it really wouldn't be right.

This is probably not something that should be on social media. Although it's a fascinating story, the problem is that the "former" owner of the guitar might find out what an error he made and try to get a lawyer to go after it and renege on the deal. Which may or may not work in court but could cause quite a headache for the new owner in any event.
@Chris_Lohmann
@Chris_Lohmann 19 күн бұрын
Maybe. But the guy said he bought the guitar for $200 at an estate sale. If the guitar was being sold at an estate sale, that means the previous owner is probably dead and their next of kin or administrator of their estate is liquidating their assets in order to pay off debts. I’ve had to do that twice (once when my mom died and again when my dad died several years later). It sucks. It’s not fun. I just wanted it to be over as soon as possible. The last thing on my mind was hiring lawyers and going after someone for more money for an item that had already been sold. Especially if I would likely never see a penny of it. It would all go toward legal fees and debt collectors. Edit: The more I think about it, the more sure I am that that’s what happened. If the previous owner had been the one selling it, I think he would have known it was worth more than $200.

Fr, scamming people is shitty, but realistically a guitar is a guitar, I don’t care about the name on the headstock. The practice is unethical, but so is pretty much every major manufacturer anyway. I ultimately decided that I probably won’t just buy counterfeit outright, but would if it were a replica or something. There was a Yngwie Malmsteen signature Strat in the shop I work at for a repair and restring that I really liked, and my boss pointed out that it was a fake, and that didn’t chance the way it felt in my hands obviously. I’m sure there are a lot of quality control variables, but all the fakes I’ve tried were pretty decent considering, and I’m great at setting stuff up, so I’m willing to experiment

The guy that bought the guitar actually broke the law by paying $200 for a guitar worth $20-30k. He knew what it was and took advantage of the seller. It’s not out of kindness when high end collectors pay fair prices to people that don’t know what they have. The Bonamassa “Bin Liner” Flying V is a perfect example. The lady wanted $1000. These things never happen to me. 😅 I am a Vox AC30 lover. True story, I know a guy, a friend of mine, who works as a repairman for vintage gear like tube amps, organs, the earliest synthesisers, mixing consoles and so forth. He told me the story of a guitarist, who worked as a nurse, taking care of (mostly) old people at there own homes. He helped out a couple and they were chatting about their lives and stuff and he told the old couple that he plays guitar in a band. The old man replied that he used to play in a band for a short period of time in the early or mid sixties. Then they talked about gear. The nurse told the old man he likes the Vox sound (side note: I wasn’t there, so naturally I don’t know exactly how this conversation went precisely). The old man then replied that he still had his and he hadn’t played it since the late sixties (this was approximately 5 years ago) and he went on saying he could have it if he wanted. Turned out the amp was in the room all along. It was hidden under a table cloth and a vase with flowers was standing on top of it! When they removed the vase and the table cloth he saw a fully original early sixties Vox AC30, looking as if it was brand new!!! The nurse insisted on paying for it. And the old man said something like “if you really want to pay for it then buy my wife some fresh flowers. It’s yours!” When he had the amp he brought it to a repair man. I think the only thing that needed to be changed were some elcos (or something like that - I don’t know anything about these things). Needless to say the nurse was a happy man. I used to dream about findings like that. Never happened. 😊

@@Crispy_Music_2024 This is true. I think there is some intrinsic value to something like a vintage guitar that represents an era that people are nostalgic about for various reasons. It exists with many things like cars, watches, etc. - people ascribe value to things like old-world craftsmanship, or "golden era" timeframes. Those people tend to be older, have a little coin in their pocket and are willing to pay to capture that nostalgia in the guitar-shaped or car-shaped container. Look - I have some of that in me with regard to Fender guitars because I respect the hell out of Leo Fender and what he did. But I don't think a guitar made in 1962 or in the 1950s has as much intrinsic value as people ascribe to them. But they just keep going up in price...so what do I know?

Let me ask a thought provoking question. If the buyer was aware that he was buying a 1952 LP from a seller who had no idea what they were selling, for the asking price of $200, did the buyer defraud the seller, by not disclosing what he knew about the guitar? Whatever the answer to that question may be, one cannot say that the buyer was honest.
