Yes they're making excuses about him drinking and how he's behaving because they feel sorry for him. He doesn't need people feeling sorry for him. He needs to be empowered to have a life feeling valued off of alcohol. He sounds like he's suicidal. He needs counselling and to get off that substance that disinhibits his anger and feelings of worthlessness (listen to how he talks about his mother in law going to give him a lift, he's angry that h e can't even do that right now). I hope he is still alive and on a path to sobriety and a life supported by people who understand and don't allow him to live in excuses.

There are about 17 vet suicides a day in the US, PTSD is very deep rooted and very complex. My guess is the high stress of marriage that everyone experiences and handles just fine, could have been very overwhelming. I'm certainly no doctor I do however have experience. I know that alcohol increases the complexity and the reaction stressors is very seldom predictable or consistent. Freedom isn't free, someone has paid a very high price for it, and many of the scares combat are not visible. We all hope and pray he can find a way to work through it.

I met with a UK ex soldier in Thailand a few years ago. After he had a few drinks he started to break down and cry more than I had ever seen a big tough guy cry. He started to tell me about the horrible things he had seen happen in Iraq- while doing service there- kids being killed, families wiped out, people blown apart -he said it never leaves him even in his sleep. People of course can be anyone when in Thailand but then he showed me his torso with so many wounds from gun shots etc. This was as real as it gets and to this day I always think about what the brave men and women in the services - police included, face every day of their lives. I have the most utmost respect for the people in service and its just heart breaking the lives they are expected to live with little support once they leave the service.

@@iffracem I've known two men personally who did this... friends that shouldn't have gotten married with the doubts they were having, but rather than discussing it with their soon-to-be spouse, they caved to the pressure of "but we laid out all this money!" and got heavily drunk the day before/day of the wedding, instead. They both divorced less than 2 years later, having wished they heeded their gut at the time. I also have two friends from an online group that had exes that did the same, (one male, one female) but I didn't know the men they married (& divorced) personally. To me, four people is enough to be described as "many," especially when I'm only referring to those who might be having cold feet. I assume that as many of the issues and failures could be the women's issues as much as the men, but like I said.. assumption. The men may have got drunk simply due to that silly institution of the "bucks night", not stress... some women might have done the same due to a "hens night" I would not say my observations are in any way accurate, or more valid than yours, just anecdotal, and I was genuinely interested if there was a study or research done that you had discovered. I'm keeping to myself. I have trust issues because of my PTSD, and I think my baggage is for me to tote, no one else. Sure, it's lonely, but it's much more fair on others. I've dated a married woman, I've felt that crushing sense of inadequacy, the eternal question dancing around your head; "Why won't she leave him for me?" It's always better to just walk away brother. I'm lucky to be a vet (21 years service) in Australia, we're pretty well looked after here. Only hassle is the typical problems of having to deal with any large bureaucracy, but there are plenty of advocates that help with that. One criticism of my country is that we apparently pay way too much tax. But that level of tax lets us do the right thing in regards to vets, decent medical care for everyone and other programs that many in the US liken to "socialism" or even "communism". To take care of your vets, you'll need to convince your lawmakers... but I guarantee it won't be them that lose any money or benefit, so the taxpayer will have to pay more tax. That won't go down well with most, sadly.

Imagine being in this state, because of the war in Iraq ... not because of protecting your country, but because of a political lie ... none of the weapons of mass destructions where being found and none of the 9/11 terrorists came from Iraq. Nothing was gained from this war, except the rise of the IS. Soldiers and civilians being killed and wounded suffered for bad politics.

@@BamadeusTTV there's help available. But he has to actually get it- neither the government nor the military is going to track him down, call him every day, remind him of every appointment and force him to go to therapy and take his meds. Not to mention that getting drunk will basically cancel that out anyway. Florida is full of veterans and full of veterans resources- moreso than several other states for sure. This guy is no different than anyone else with issues in that he actually has to want help and commit himself to getting it- help that is actually available to him and not to a lot of other people.
