Man City nearly GAVE UP on him, now he’s INTEGRAL to success | John Stones, Midfielder

John Stones has had an interesting time with Manchester City, to say the least. Stones has consistently been regarded as a great talent in defence. However, he’s always been regarded as a risk-taking centre-back, both in how he advances the ball through his dribbling, and the passes that he makes.
However, this season, he has taken on a new role in Man City’s midfield, which has helped Pep Guardiola address City’s issues with balance. With Stones as a midfielder in a 3-2-4-1 formation, Manchester City are capable of their free-flowing attack - of which Stones joins - as well as retaining their defensive assuredness that has been a hallmark of their success over the past few seasons.

Bro that Ruben Dias and Stones duo centerback combo was monstrous if only they still stuck together but the new combo with Dias and Ake in the back and stones forward is an amazing refresher that city needed to bounce back mid way this season

Honestly thought I was the only one who recognized how good they are together. I remember in the 2020/21 i think Laporte was sidelined and STONES and Dias were tue best defensive partnership in the UCL and the Prem. And keeping Laporte out of the teak speaks volumes as i rate so highly byt Stones is so technically gifted and just honestly become like prime CR7 in this new position. Like his always there in the big games and small games. He's just immense. He literally spearheaded CITYS season just phenomenal

Pep Guardiola is a true genius. He transforms players wherever he goes. Almost every player reaches the next level under his guide. He's adapted his gameplan in three different leagues over the course of more than a decade. That's why he's still relevant to this day. I wish Jose Mourinho had changed his coaching and playing style with the times. It's sad to see such a legendary manager not being a serial winner anymore.

@@md19974 I’m not too sure about it. He won the Europa league with United and got them second with a team that is much worse than Ten Hag’s.Mourinho got sacked after losing 3-1 vs Liverpool while Ten Hag is being praised this season even though he’s lost 7-0 vs Liverpool and 6-3 vs City. He’s only at Roma bc he got sacked from Tottenham but not even Conte could get a decent performance out of them so you can’t blame him. I think he still has something to prove. He only plays defensively if the team he coaches is lacking offensively. I think he would be successful at a big team

In my opinion, Rodri was the best player in the premier league last season (2021/22). He played most matches and even scored the crucial second goal against Aston Villa. He was brilliant in almost every game. It's a shame that players in his position will never get the recognition they deserve.

I remember Pep tried Stones in Midfield in 2018/19 I think against Crystal Palace when Fernandinho was injured and they had no cover for a DM. It was a failure City lost. Bring Dias to City is what turned his form and now he’s a full ok Beckembauer!

In the first half of the 17/18 season he was genuinely amazing. That was when he started showing the talent we knew he had. Then he got injured and it completely ruined his momentum and he didn't fully recover back until into of the 20/21 season. He's been consistently amazing since, legit never puts a foot wrong for City or England. My favourite player right now for sure

Honestly this is at least in my opinion, Pep understanding and accepting his players more too as much as Stones finding form and fulfilling his potential. I mean he (Pep) is still insistently stubborn when it comes to even just subbing a player out but with Grealish and Ake it really looks like that he's letting some of that stubborness go to better utilize his players according to their abilities, becoming more pragmatic and win oriented. Hence them reaching the CL final, bringing in more consistency instead of overthinking things.
