Retirees really struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same number of years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through a wealth manager, and my dad through the 401k.

This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Its unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $287k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

The case is CLARK v. Astrue. Over five million sick and disabled recipient were sent letters demanding we report to social security in our state. As you showed up at the federal building in your city and state you were arrested. Innocent men women and children were thrown in the back of vans and on buses and taken to jail as socalled fleeing felon. We lost our benefit and were told we had to pay back tens of thousands of dollars. We filed a class action lawsuit. Social security administration was supposed to reimburse us. But most of us are still being forced to pay back our lawful benefits even now.

@@ricardojigashi8100 These people get overpaid a few hundred a month for years that's how it adds up without the recipient knowing they are being overpaid. They turn in all the correct paperwork but SSA isn't keeping up on the paperwork on their end. It can take years for them to catch the mistake. The other thing is when you are awarded SS especially disability they back pay from date of applying. The subtract 5 months which they say is a reasonable time frame to process your claim but it never takes only 5 months. They pay all of it at one time and the recipient thinks that SSA did their paperwork and got the numbers right with the info they or the lawyer for them submitted plus SSA can look up your tax info and see how much you've paid into and see what you should be getting. If SSA got it wrong they overpay. These are a couple ways someone is overpaid 20K and not know it. Did you watch the 60 Mins episode? If you havn't check it out they go into details on how this happened and what's going on.

Always return the money that you are not supposed to get from the SSA as soon as possible and keep precise record of the repayment. If an SSA worker informs you that it "could be" additional payment for your having been paid less than the correct amount in the past, do not take their words for it. Ask them to give you a document confirming that to be the case. If they refuse to give you documentary confirmation, just return the money in spite of their unconfirmed verbal explanation of the overpayment. Chances are the SSA will ask you to return the overpayment later with the threat of terminating all payments from the SSA and all medical benefits if you fail to pay back the overpayment.

@@BlakWiseCracker I am talking from my personal experience of helping someone in that exact situation. Yes, they did threaten to take away the payments and benefits of an old and disabled person after her husband died even after the repayment for the overpayment to her deceased husband was made promptly. They did so by claiming the person owed the SSA money that has not been repaid even after the repayment was made months ago. They even made that false claim four time in a few months so I had to take the old and disabled person to the SSA office four times to disprove their false claim. Fortunately, I have made a precise record of the repayment and proved that their claim to be false every time. The last time I demanded to have an official hearing with the the supervisor in the office. The supervisor ended up asking me not to call for an official hearing by admitting that they made a mistake and promised that it will not happen again to that person. That's why I advise people to make precise record of their repayments. You are being ignorant to say that I'm being overly dramatic when the real situation was worse than that I described in my first reply.

So, even if he denied the payment they would NOT have taken it back. They trap you this way. I tried to give my stimulus back and they denied me as well. Basic 101. We are restricted to assets of $2,000. Where should we pull this out of? $2,000 doesn't cover car, plumbing, electrical, or roof repairs, flooding, hospital stay, ... Rules haven't changed since 1984. If a change can be implemented immediately, payback could be a possibility. If we wait until SSI is no longer existent, not so much. There should be no limits on assets. If we scrimp, save in an IRA, 401K, etc., we might survive until SSI is insolvent. Think this through. If you provide SNAP benefits on the 1st of the month, and don't advise of the error until the 11th, obviously the items purchased with the funds have been eaten already. Dont sign someone up for medicare, withhold the funds from the person's SSI check without prior communication with the person, then stating we will not sign you up, after the deadline, AND not refund the amount withheld. We're trying to make it on pennies here. The constant back and forth can be devastating both financially and physically. Asking for refunds? How with an asset limit of $2,000?

My ex has schizoaffective disorder (a 'fun' combo of bipolar and schizophrenia) and filed a claim for SSDI. It was intially denied, then upon appeal, accepted. After acceptance, he was given a month window to file for Medicare and automatically kicked off Medicaid. He wasnt mentally competent to understand this, lost access to his meds keeping him even somewhat stable. Then three years of back payments arrived as he was in the middle of developing a psychotic episode due to being off meds 😮 Do ya think he spent or saved that while in full blown psychotic mania?
