I will never forget going to a pet store as a child with my grandmother, I was around 6/7 yrs old and they had what looked like large fish tanks without the lids on top that contained the same type of rats featured in this story. I was at eye level to one of those tanks and I noticed that every time someone would enter the store the rats would get so excited! My grandma told me that they were domesticated rats, they’ve probably lived in the pet store for awhile and just wanted to go home with someone and be loved and cared for. I thought to myself.. rats? Really? I guess even as a child I didn’t really view them as pet material. This is when my grandma told me that every living creature in that shop desired love and attention. I’m in my 50’s today but for some reason I remember that conversation vividly, it gave me a different perspective on smaller animals such as rats, hamsters or even spiders for that matter. They all have the ability to sense what love is which is pretty darned cool. 😊

Most of us aren't "insert weird animal pet name here now" until we experience them for ourselves. I used to help out a friend of mine take care of injured animals and ended up homing a young bat and a young skunk once (not at the same time). Their level of intelligence and affection were beyond what I ever could have imagined. It became hard just to not get attached to either of them, as the end goal was releasing back into the wild.

I wasn't a rat person either, my friend, until I had my own experience with them. Now I know they are the most gentle creatures I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. I hope one day Asena you can experience the love from a small being..it's amazing. But if not that's ok too. At least u are educating yourself. Maybe videos like these will help you become more compassionate towards rats and oneday you might find one that's in trouble and you can remember this video!! I drove 2 hours to rescue my boys that were labeled feeder rats..meaning they were snake food. Not my babies!! Haha, I'd do it all over again if I had the chance. My 6 year old loved them dearly too. So, he was our guest of honor at Thanksgiving, haha. He was a boy, so no stinger thank goodness cause I probably wouldn't have been so quick to pick it up haha. I actually work as a caretaker for lab rats, and there are very strict rules in place to ensure that the animals experience as little suffering as possible! Admittedly the lab I work for can't really offer too much enrichment bc they study rare medical ailments (so the animals bred for the studies are often immunocompromised and need sterile environments), but we always make sure everyday that they have clean bedding, food, and water, and anything from a tiny scratch to them just not looking very well needs to be reported to one of the 3 on-call vets to check out. We're also encouraged to give them whatever enrichment items we can when it's allowed via protocol, and the researchers are encouraged to play with them whenever they can to make them more comfortable. I can't speak for other labs ofc, but the rules for making sure they're as happy and healthy as we can manage are taken extremely seriously at mine

And used as snake food too. It doesn’t seem fair that fancy rats are considered pets and feeder rats are fed to snakes just because they have pink eyes. When I used to have pet rats, I’d always hit up the snake food section because they were only $3 instead of $12 and they need a home more.

Awwwww!! My fatty rattys passed this past Christmas. My daughter and I were devastated. They aren't dirty, they are actually quite clean animals. When I got my 2 boys, they both had myco. (Sorry if I mispronounced it or wrote that wrong but it's a type of respiratory infection that's often deadly If not treated properly.) I had a nebulizer and the albuterol solution so I fashioned up a box and gave them 2 treatments a day. It worked and I had 2 1/2 wonderful years with my boys. RIP Goose and Duece.

Gave Lucy to a friend who had 3 one year old rats and surprisingly they got along well and she was able to live her last year with new friends and not alone. My housemate who moved to another country left me with 2 rats, one was missing the front paw, don't know why, my friend just brought her like this, but it didn't stop her from climbing my hand when I've put it in the cage, they were great, resting on my shoulder when I was home, sleeping on my lap or when I went outside with them, they never went so far, that I would have lost visual contact with them, just lovely animals, very clever, my family used to have hamsters, they both died because of their stupidity, one got stuck behind furniture, the other one fell from balcony, rats are more cautious, more friendly, you actually have a relationship with them based on trust and love 🐀💖🐀

OMG, same way I feel about my rats. Over a decade now of falling in love then being heartbroken. Yet somehow they remain my pet of choice. Thank you for sharing this, it really brightened my morning to see another rat owner who is knowledgeable about them, pays them attention instead of thinking of them as cage animals and someone who is giving six ratties a very lucky, happy life that sadly not enough rats get to experience. I just lost my last female right before Xmas a few months back & her brother, her partner & bff April of that year. This last batch has hit me intensely & I'm still trying to recover. They were free roaming with a few home base cages around the place (entire place rat-proofed for their safety of course). Such personalities & energy & love & excitement, bonding,... When her brother passed she wheeked in sadness for an entire day and night non stop. She would not eat that he loved & they would try & steal from each other, & she began snuggling with us during the nightime, just laying on our feet, curling up to your legs, back, neck, etc. I am so devastated. They are the closest thing to children I have/will ever have as I cannot bear children & I've never desired chdren so no adoption either. When I don't understand something I am seeing between parents & chronic, I just imagine if those circumstances were occurring between my pets & I, & then I can finally feel & understand the reactions. (Growing up with animals as my companions & safe place.) So for me it's difficult to imagine real children being ny children, but my pets are like how parents treat their chdren, and if it was bizarro world & I had kids, I would likely feel about them the way s I me ppl feel about their pets--the pet owners who care about their pets buy would not go into debt to cover medical expenses for them. But speaking of medical expenses, I have best wishes for you when six rats all get to that stage where medical attention begins or becomes more frequent & urgent. The downside with rats is that the majority of the medical expenses all hit one after another with little time in between to recover before another $300, two weeks later $450 or some overnight hospital stays with a fee per hour slamming you with almost two grand and you know in days weeks or even just a couple months the bills will pile up. Then multiply that by 6 that by 6 with them all requiring Che kips/treatment around the same time. I did that once before when I naively did not expect health bills to all come at once I stead of spread out like some other pets. Twos or fours only now. Ha ha. I hope everything goes as well and smoothly as possible for you and your rattie bear children. They look so happy and healthy and well taken care of. Facking adorable too. I am seriously so happy for you and your guys. Such an amazing experience and love shared that you all get to have in life. : ) Posting your Lil guys has allowed me to experience a touching morning & you are owed a huge "Thank You!" for spreading good vibes, smiles, elated moods and education available for to everyone. I really appreciate that for me but also for the others who view you clip and experience something positive from it, be it emotionally, educationally, etc. Thanks again. : ) Oh, PS, I didn't proofread but awake far too long and now my keypad is blurry and I haven't removed my contacts yet haha. So apologies for any errors, lack of clarity, cohesion or just rambles. But my needs to apogee for any if the times where it has completely reworded my sentanve(s) completely changing the meaning or to having no meaning. K, thanks, by! : )

@@elsjemassyn8921 Generalizations are there for a reason, because they are generally true. Glad your a decent person, but most women are not. Most women don't even know how to be decent. The genes make them prefer dominant aggressive men, despite all the problems that come with it. They perceive dominance with excitement, even if they get beaten up in the process (of course this is an extreme example, but its only the extreme end of a real phenomena). Most men are decent people, but society forces them to act super extrovert and aggressive (or sneaky and creepy) to get a girlfriend. Women see men who are balanced as boring, yet they are the real men, they are the men like me who would provide, be emotionally mature, (yet still fun in bed). I just think most women cant see in gradient, its all black and white, either your hot to them or not, they cant be bothered to get to know you. And in the meantime the creeps bed them. My rat was completely uncaged. He lived in a 3 room Barbie house that I removed the windows from and could come and go as he pleased. BUT, he did get into my clothing drawers and cupboards and made HUGE nests by shredding clothes. 🤣. My mum almost killed me a few times... They can be destructive, so just be aware of that. And if you decide to keep it more contained, then please have a huge custom-made home for it. They are super intelligent and are very aware of being caged. They become depressed like humans do. In fact, rats are used for all sorts of nasty experiments to gain an understanding of human behaviour and drug effects. That is how similar they are to us! In many ways, they are closer to us in emotions and behaviour than cats and dogs. People don't realise it simply because they cannot talk like we do. But if you get it from a baby, you will quickly learn to understand it, and they are such affectionate mammals! Once my old cats have finally left for heaven, I will definitely get a rat again!

Rats are the best pets, really. They're pocket puppies and indeed a mix of the best bits of both cats and dogs in personality. The only sad part of having rats is their short lifespan but even that comes with the silver lining that if you dedicate yourself to rats you get to know SO MANY wonderful ratty personalities over the years. Many families opt for hamsters as kids' pets but hamsters don't have the same innate social need to love and be loved as rats have because most hamsters are solitary animals as adults, unlike rats that are colony animals and thus primed for forming tight bonds and relationships with other rats, and with humans. With birds you may need to only have one bird if you want to form a real bond with the animal, but with rats it doesn't matter how many you have, they will still seek you out to socialise with you and the more rats there's in the house actually means the braver and more human-seeking the rats become!

@@nikkijooste-strombeck5045 thanks Nikki. I will think about him every day for the rest of my life. And, I thank God that I had him for 10 years (lots of ups and lots of downs but he remained loving and loyal through it all)
