A newer, better version with the same song and all. This time with videos.
Have you wondered what it was like to see Man O' War take on Sir Barton? John P. Grier? Go to www.freehorseracegame.com and you can experience that from the grandstand, over head, and even on his back.

Your Man o' War montage was so lovely it made me cry. I don't always get so sappy but I have been a fan of Big Red since I was a young kid, though I came along too late to see him on the track or off and all I could do was visit his grave to pay my respects and say Hey big beautiful horse.... So yeah, I found this very moving--gave me goosebumps and tears all at once! Thanks so very much.

With comparing the comformation of the two horses. Man O' War had the tall lanky build plus the muscular build that could carry him fsr away from Secratariat any time of the day. Also once he was im the lead he would be held back but not on this day he would have his work cut out fore him. But he would win in the end. Our Mighty Man O' War. There will be only one lie him & one Sevretsiat. Secritsiat was a long distance cousin of Man O" War

I think that they are all amazing. Naturally, everyone is going to have a preference as to whom they think is the best. The fact of the matter is, that for whatever reasons, MANY horses have captured the imaginations of horse lovers around the world. I'm not a religious person by any means, but when horses were created, perfection (in many forms - fastest, strongest, most courageous, most beautiful, etc) was created too. All of the great horses in racing history deserve accolades.

Actually that is a common conclusion, and seems proven by the record. In fact, Riddle was concerned the horse would be broken by the high weights Vosburgh suggested for the next year. He wasn't as worried about losing as about hurting the horse. Just being careful. Somehow I don't think that applies to MOW, who was tough as nails - look how many times he hurt himself and kept winning. No wimp was he; no abcess on a lip would've hurt his running.

You cannot directly compare times! This is why Andy Beyer developed his Beyer Speed Figures. He knew that track variants can vary DAILY at the SAME track much less over years at different tracks! The tracks had very different make-ups even over the 50 years between those horses. Never mind other changes (steel on one's feet vs. light and airy aluminum).

Because Sam Riddle didn't think a 3 year old horse should run 1 1/4 miles in early May, so he held him out of the Derby. It wasn't known as the Triple Crown back then, so it wasn't a big deal. Thoroughbred racing was a dying sport till Man o' War shocked the world. Not to mention he would have had to ship him by train all the way to Kentucky then back for the Preakness.

Sam Riddle also refused to send Man O'War to the kentucky Derby stating that the race was too long a distance too early in the year...again, looking out for Man O'War's welfare. I agree with Sam not sending him to the derby. Racing was really only in New England. The racing America cared about. Why ship a horse, by train, all the way to Kentucky for one race no one really cared about, then go all the way back to Maryland for the Preakness, a race people really do care about. No one really cared about the derby at the time. The real races were the Preakness and Belmont. And though Sir Barton won the "triple crown" it wasn't known then.

There is no public documentation of an abscess for the Wood - the only info via vet is that he had one between the Wood and Derby, and it popped only days before the Derby. @BigPetrov As for the "last-minute" Woodward - they had him entered in case things were wet so Riva Ridge wouldn't have to run. There is no doubt NY tracks in the Sept/Oct could get wet, so that is a "lame" excuse. Maybe Laurin was really incompetent and despite knowing a wet track could happen, didn't bother ensuring Sec could be put in. @BigPetrov Look at SI archives and DRF archives. There is no public record apparently that whole year - no mention in horsie news - that Secretariat had any excuse for the Wood. Constantly called "inexplicable". The VET film was only in the last 10 years, and he was recollecting from some 30 years out. That also conflicted with what NACK wrote in his (in)famous "Bible" of Sec, whom I suspect is behind alot of myths about Sec, as he is a total flackey big on poetic license.

@BigPetrov I disagree. Any injury - especially to the running gear - during a race is a legitimate excuse, I'd say. In Ray Wolfe's book, e.g., he never mentions an abscess IIRC. Just "the horse wasn't right" sort of thing.

@BigPetrov It's very possible he was hampered - although I think you need very good reasons. Mostly, something that happened in the race a`la Alysheba's fall or Touch Gold's. Or War Admiral or Count Fleet cutting themselves and bleeding during it. But they won. The fact we can't seem to find direct reference to a mouth abscess in the news reports, e.g., before the Derby or well after it is strange - maybe it WASN'T a reason at all.

Bill Nack followed Secretariat and he said that Secretariat had a mouth abscess.

@@TimesUp777 Bill Nack was a lackey for Sec. A schoolgirl. He is the ONLY reference for having a tooth abscess right at the Wood. The vet who checked on it checked on Tuesday (there was a YT film of him discussing this years ago - don't know if it still exists), not Saturday or Sunday. Further, the Ray Woolfe book doesn't mention it. And most damning of all - ZERO media reports about it for months. A researcher said it was a year, but my own checks into 1973 reveal DRF reporter still mystified why Sec lost the Wood - in August. Every time there is some lore about poor ol'Sec (abscess, votes on greatest, etc), it's Nack - I lost any faith he is truthful. Nack the lackey.

@@theOlLineRebel it was in the Secretariat movie so apparently Penny Chenery must have knew about it or they probably wouldn't have put it in the movie. It doesn't really matter if he had it or not Secretariat list races because they raced him a the damn time. 2 different times he raced on 9 days rest and during his 21 races in 16 months he raced an average of a little over 1 time per month! That is running a horse to death. It says that Man O War raced for 2 years. Regardless, they are both great horses. Btw. Just because something isnt documented on paper doesn't mean it didn't happen.
@theOlLineRebel

@@TimesUp777 Yes they are both super-great horses. We just get caught up in "who is #1", single placing. As for rest - MOW raced with 2 days between, and maximum - MAXIMUM - 28 days (every month). Average was 13 days (under 2 weeks), whereas Sec averaged 19 days (under 3 weeks). (Yes, I've been involved with these wars a very long time and have sifted the data myself, still on hand in the computer from primary sources.)

Great compositions! I like that you mentioned all his time records most accurately. Although, you need to correct the "TR" comment: "equalled and tied" are each the same meanings. 1 record was tied/equalled, 2 were new. Maybe you could add more data, such as max/average weight, days between races, etc? Also, you could mention he lowered a WR by 3+ seconds. (All this makes him look scarier!) Great summary, though, great music.

@MelC1954 MOW does - the 1-5/8 at Belmont. Look it up, NYRA - Belmont site. Not sure about others, but probably not. And what is your point? Sec is 50 years younger. He's more likely to still hold records; that's not shocking.

@bbmtge The problem is sometimes things are simply repeated enough that people believe them, even when false. We need to look at primary sources, not after-the-fact 2nd-hand info. It's like the Man O'War stories - the "turned around" at the start is likely exaggeration and embellishment. It seems indeed he AND the other 2 outer horses were facing maybe sideways or not up to the start, but not facing backwards. They all got off poorly. Facing backwards sounds better, though.

@cmf4321 "how MANY speed records a horse breaks shows his true greatness." You admit it. Then MOW blows away Secretariat. In 11 races at 3 he set 8 records. Sec only 5 in 12 starts. Even if you give Sec the Preakness and make 6, you can give MOW the 1-1/4 Amer/world record and make 9 (the Whisk Broom II was bogus, and minus that, Sir Barton and MOW would've set the next record).

He was a she, and Kincsem was an English-bred in a bush-league country. She was (officially - some suspect ringers) 54/54. That's like great KY bloodlines racing in Montana. Kincsem only ran TWICE in serious races, one in France, then in England in the Goodwood. She did win, but it was only 2. And 6 were walk-overs, so the real recap is more like 48/48. Still impressive, but highly suspect running a bunch of amateurs.

"Dr. Gilliam found the abcess before the race." Why did they race him, then (again, see Copelan film)? Between that and not prepping a horse they know very well could have to sub for a rainy track, these connections must've been very incompetent. Another thing that has more links - Thoroughbred Champions website forum (look it up - can't do links here), then the thread called "If there was a BC and a DWC starting in 1979..." (got way off topic) which includes this argument.
