What I find amazing with the writing in this scene, is that when Jor-El asks the council for the codex he says "There is still hope, I have held that hope in my hands". Before this scene after Kal-El was born Jor-El held him in his hands, later in this scene Jor-El infuses the codex into Kal and later on in the movie when Kal speaks to his father's conscious he tells Kal "The people of Earth are different from us, it's true. But ultimately I believe that's a good thing. They won't necessarily make the same mistakes we did. Not if you guide them, Kal. Not if you give them hope. That's what this symbol means. The symbol of the House of El means hope. Embodied within that hope is the fundamental belief: the potential of every person to be a force for good. That's what you can bring them." The codex also has the genetic makeup of the entire populace of Krypton and Jor-El's quote is fitted perfectly. The underlying theme for this movie is that Superman is the symbol for hope and they absolutely nailed that directive!

But all that talk of hope was just lip service. The film had Clark fly around and help cause a bunch of 9/11s in metropolis and never really prioritized innocent life beyond a montage or 2. @@wilfordwarhammer8872 his direction is terrible. all he has superman ever do is look into the distance "meaningfully" and say nothing. His jokes are stupid and he didn't notice affleck and cavil both take the pass out of his jokes in justice League. The "im rich" and "i bought the banks" scenes are so terrible even Cavill's reaction shot is being played sarcastically. The overly dramatic dialogue most of the actors if you actually watch their performance they are literally just stating lines flatly. Every one is incredibly serious and overly dramatic. That not entirely down to how terrible the dialogue is. I know cavil won't have liked acting superman as a psychopath who destroys trucks, talks to hallucinations in top of mountains, AND ACTS SHOCKED TO SEE HIS DEAD DAD. Do you realise that? In that scene where he randomly walks up a mountain and see his dead dad his reaction is surprise.... Meaning he is literally seeing his dad. That's directing. The m that scene would make more sense if he just walked up the mountain, looked of into the distance and started taking to his father, who then appeared and told his story, maybe don't even have Clark look at him or acknowledge him being there, so it's as if he is remembering him and not shocked to be literally seeing him there which makes no sense. That's a major part of Snyder's problem. His movies are almost David lynch levels of surreal but he tries to play it off at just normal m just have a character hallucinate. Just have a dream sequence that's a perfect flash forward if an apocalypse. Have did he spoke to just go into Clarks dreams and control what he sees. Have cyborg visualise the banking system with two giant bronze statue of a bull and a bear attack each other in a barren vista with a giant sunset. He directs across to do things only because they look dramatic. Take the scene where the Amazon's are protecting box and one of them for no reason decides to violently there down her shield, slowly walk over to m to the box and reach out as its aggressively shaking, inching closer and closer with her hand as she's about to touch the bo..... And it stops..... That's him directing a scene to make it dramatic but there's no reason for the m get to do that. Why would she wasn't to touch it? There's no reason. It's not like they set up that maybe that one character can connect to the box and is the one who originally calns the box the first time they get it from dark seid. No. Just an attempt to make a dramatic scene and it is as lazy as the rest of his directing. It's as dumb as the new start Trek movies where stock is violently punching khan in the face repeatedly while yelling. It's that level of dumb, out of touch directing. His store worked dirt one movie. 300. The overly dramatic tone fit perfectly for that movie, but once it m you see his one trick pony act on all his following movies your realise he can't direct across to do anything but speak overly dramatically. And then randomly Barry Allen is the one character that acts differently from all the other characters in theses movies. Even Barry's dramatic scenes that could have been amazing scenes again they are awkward having him running faster than light and reverse time in that amazingly sit scene, and to have him be taking to his dad about the "tippy top" is bizarre. Having him grab that sausage from the air with a cheesy grin on his face, bizarre, having this big dramatic moment of him pushing Diana's sword, only for her to just land on the ground with no bad guys around her and not even need her sword, bizarre choice. Have her be falling and be about to go through a bunch of paradaemons who would grab her if she's unarmed. So she grabs the sword, cuts through them and then his the floor fine. Maybe even have bay reverse time again. He sees her fall, get stabbed by a daemon as her sword hits the floor, so then he runs around the tunnel and reversed it and pushes the sword. There's countless problems with the directing of this m these movies. The way scenes transition is typically just sharing cut to the next scene. Bvs was the first for this just literally cutting from person to person. She with jl, that random cut from a Atlantian torture scene to lois alone at home looking through a box looking sad and then cut back to the rest of the movie.... The guy can't direct a movie when it has multiple plot lines, he just jumped, fish backs, fish forwards, dreams nightmare, man of steel was the quest for randomly cutting back and forth with zero transition. Even in 300 the cuts back to the Queen were awkward but that was minimal enough. These movies he's doing plots from half a dozen comics and trying to do then all at the same time and it's just a rushed mess.

The opening sequence is Epic and Unique. Like that Kryptonian style WB logo, Legendary, Syncopy and DC. That sequence proved this is not just a ordinary superhero film. The VFX used in first 15 mins of Krypton is just criminally underrated. Also the costume design is badass, but nobody have goddamn eyes to notice that. Everyone is just mentally blind. This film should have got more attention but what can we do if everyone is a sinner.

The Krypton sequence is beyond brilliant. The cinematography, the photography, the pace, the soundtrack, the acting are all trully astounding. The sequence in its entirety pushes forward relentlessly, exactly how one would expect a doomsday-story to unfold. Not a single scene is superfluous, not a single line of dialog is without meaning or purpose. It is IMHO the best depiction to date of any alien world, in any sci-fi film I have ever watched and I dare say I have watched quite a few.

The story of the movie is a birth. This first scene signals that. Jor-El sacrifices himself in order to send his sperm to Earth, in the form of Kal-El. The rest of the story is that sperm finding its place on Mother Earth, finding its egg, and eventually being born through suffering and pain, as ANY BIRTH is. The first sequence and Zod's death sequence are actually edited the exact same way, with Clark and Kal's screams matching perfectly. This movie is absolutely brilliant and its a shame how Snyder doesn't get recognized for that kind of cinema.

There's a melodramatic quality in Snyder's DC films, and that's refreshing in an age where supposed "epics" and superhero movies have become snarky and cynical. There's no tricks here. This is a birth of a hero on a dying world. Everything about how its made is genuine and it heightens the experience.
