Man Shows Up at His Own Funeral

"A 41-year-old car washer shocked his family when he interrupted a funeral being held for him at his mother's home in the town of Alagoinhas in northeastern Brazil, police said Tuesday.
Police inspector Roberto Lima said by telephone that on Sunday Jose Marcos Araujo identified a body at the city morgue as being that of his brother, Gilberto.
Lima said that Jose Marcos took the body to his mother's home where a wake was held.
"The confusion started when news started circulating that a car washer had been shot dead," Jose Marcos' wife, Ana Paula, told the UOL Internet news portal. "Police called my husband and told him that his brother had been killed and his body was at the morgue."
Lima said the confusion was "understandable."
"The two men closely resembled each other and both worked as car washers," Lima said adding that the man whose body was in the morgue was named Genivaldo Santos Gama. I actually had this happen to me in a screwy sort of way, in my hometown there was another gentleman with the same name as mine, while my wife and I were on vacation in Florida back in 1986 this other guy passed away, my sister saw the obit and of course thought it was me. Just then I happened to call her and she freaked out.

He was literally late for his own damn funeral. Amazing. One thing, if I showed up and didn't see certain people at my funeral, I would probably make a list and never forgive those people or just let them think I was dead and then show up at their door one day and freak them the fuck out.

This happened to my family with our cat. We witness her getting hit by a car, we called our siblings we were all crying outside, our close neighbor and family friend was comforting us and we buried her in our back yard and everything. Well I I went inside to be alone and went to the back of the house and saw her cat bowl and began to cry again. A few moments later I hear "MEOW" and look down and she is next to her bowl waiting to be fed. I picked her up and brought her out side and was like " guys, Mellow is right here" turns out it was our neighbors cat and we then comforted her ☹️

Reminds me of that non-fiction book about two blonde friends who looked similar and were in a bad car accident. One died and the other ended up in a coma (and recovered). The families eventually realised that the body had been wrongly identified and so one family found that their daughter was alive and the other found that their daughter was dead and had been buried with everyone thinking it was her friend.

Trust me, not being able to recognize someone CAN happen. Years ago when I was single and living on my own, it happened way too often! At a laundromat, a relative of another girl came up to me and started talking about uncle so and so. I had to tell her she had mistaken me for someone else. She stepped back and in total shock. This girl was seen at different places by people I knew very well. They would argue that it was me. Even the guy I was dating told me how he saw me at a club with an older gentleman. I don't think I ever convinced him it wasn't me. while at work, a co worker told my mom she saw my engagement picture in the paper. Mom laughed and said she wasn't aware I was engaged. I decided to cut my hair short. Guess what? She did the same thing! I was told her name was even close to mine. I never saw her. Kinda wish I had. I finally moved out of state, and that ended that. So, I can see why trying to identify a dead person could be difficult.

usually wakes are performed within only a couple days after a death, so its not too strange if a family member goes missing for 2 or 3 days. i'd never know if my aunt passed without being told in that amount of time.
