I was born in 1941 in Huntington WV. My grandfather was Dr. A.E. Altizer whose practice was in Accoville. I have driven this road hundreds of times, only one snow wreck in 1965. I love and miss WV and my family who are all gone now. It is as if it never happened. I am glad to see the films of Man and Accoville. Thank you so much.

Loved it. Traveled through this road and many southern WVA roads in the early 1970s through the late 1990s, working for the power company!

I have been over the old route 10 road hundreds of times. I lived in Man and Gilbert, West Virginia growing up. There used to be a sign right before you went up the mountain, from Man toward Logan, that warned you that you were now going to be driving over the most dangerous road in West Virginia. And they sure weren't kidding! Giant boulders roll off the mountain and onto the road sometimes. Also, as indicated by some of my timestamps, lanes collapse over the side of the mountain. Imagine driving this at night with no lights. All you have is orange cones to indicate that your lane is about to suddenly vanish. So easy to drive over the side of the mountain! The timestamp at 14:54 (bridge) is where my father proposed to my mother many years ago. I now live in Columbus, Ohio and have for years. But I miss the people of West Virgina, the scenery, and all the other wonderful memories this place gave me. Thank you for sharing this! I really enjoyed the ride and the memories!

When I was a kid in the late 50's early 60's we lived at Lundale which is several miles above Man up Buffalo Creek....Every other Saturday my mom and dad would take my sister, my little brother and me to the big city of Logan to shop and this is the way we would come ...instead of guard rails there were short round wooden posts which were painted white and had a wire cable running between them to give the illusion they would somehow slow or stop your super heavy 1960's Automoblie from going down over the hillside to your death on the Rail Road tracks far below or into the River on 3 mile curve to drown if wou weren't very careful...As narrow as this road seems it used to be at least a foot narrower until they widened it where ever possible in the 70's.... I always loved Dad (or Mom) driving us past the little Airport at Taplin far below and across the River and always hoped I'd see an Airplane landing... I doubt if very many people remember the Wooden Sign at the beginning of 3 mile curve, at the Mouth of Rum Creek that Said "Three Mile Curve, the longest curve in West Virginia with a Highway, a RailRoad Track and a River all running Parallel"... No One wore Seat Belts back then, and as a small boy I would often ride laying horizontally above the back seats below the rear windshield and no one thought anything about it. It was very scary driving around the 3-mile curve when the River was flooding and the swift-moving, brown water was up even with the highway. There used to be many Rail Road crossings and odds were about 50 / 50 that you would get blocked by a very long Coal Train several times either on the way back from or too the Big City of Logan with The Dime Store (where I would usually get a small toy) , And we would always get two weeks worth of Grocries at Krogers, and there was A&P supermarket and Watsons, Crown Jewlers, Super S, "K' City, The Army and Navy Store, WLOG Music land, a dozen different Shoe Stores and The Dairy, The Smoke House and other Resterants, Aracoma Drugs, McCormicks, Steel Furnature and Appliance Store, Raymonds and Silver Brand Clothing Stores, The Mercantil, Sears, Car Dealerships, Logan Planning Mill, Chemical Valley other Clothing and Furnature stores, The Bible Bookshop and Radio Shack and many other Businesses I can't think of and of course we always stopped at Morissons Drive-In on the way back home...It makes me want to tear up thinking of all Logan used to have but it's mostly all just memories now, all part of my wonderful Childhood...

New road is great, but I liked testing my driving skills when I first got my drivers license. Good trip down memory lane as a frequent visitor to Logan County.

It was such a busy road 30 years ago, it was really dangerous is some spots. A lot of deaths happened. Many drove off the cliff in those bad spots.

Lived all around Logan County. Mom and Dad were living in Lundale beside the old school when mom went into labor. I was born in the old Holden Hospital. Mom's brother lived in Amherstdale up on the hill heading up the hollow back in the 60s and 70s. Driving through Man when I was a kid was a hoot! Thanks for posting!

I had a friend from Logan WV while stationed in the military in Cheyenne WY in 1975. Her first name was Bobby (Roberta). One of the nicest persons. Maybe one day I can visit. My dad worked in the Steel Mills of Weirton WV.

It would be helpful if you'd go a bit slower and have your camera record the communities to the left and right. The Rita Mall is on the right and didn't even show. For us that traveled that road every day and lived there, it would mean a lot.

My LHS buddies of 55, 56, and 57 used to see who could drive from Logan to Man in least amount of time (on old road). Doug Bass was fastest, driving it in ten minutes.

Nothing except local traffic now. I'm sure you saw that there were almost no other vehicles. But when it was the ONLY road it was a deadly one! I traveled it many, many times.

This road has become a joke. They land filled with empty cargo trailers that are collapsing under the road. It's like riding a horse and buggie road. The dips in the highway will throw you out of your seat and when you enter a bridge you look back to make sure you left no parts behind. They want to extend the highway from Oceana to Welch hell there's nothing in Oceana. People travel every day from Welch to Bluefield at the average speed of 20 mph, I guess they want everyone to slow down and count the abandoned buildings in those useless little towns.
@bradlane3662
@bradlane3662 Жыл бұрын
Sorta unkind friend. Those "useless" towns built this damn country with the coal that made the steel that built the infrastructure. And since you're so knowledgeable, are you aware that a four lane will soon be completed from Beckley through Welch and Bluefield to Williamson. They're moving fast with all of it. That way you won't have to count those abandoned buildings.
