The Plain Bagel Episode VI
Managed solutions can come with pretty high fees, which has led to the development of low cost investment vehicle alternatives. In this video, we discuss the popular Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) as well as the topical Robo-Advisor.

So I have watched many of your videos, I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. Every video you say everything exactly correct. I constantly enjoy videos by financial channels but almost nobody shows a full series of what investments are at least with it broke down as well as this. what a completely underrated channel. Then there are many that have obnoxious errors or outright false statements. You actually know your stuff.

Hi Richard, just curious, what is your background education? You clearly have a wealth of knowledge on the topic of finance and I assume you most likely work within the industry as well. Are you a fellow Torontonian as you mentioned Toronto a few times throughout your videos. I enjoy the videos keep up the great work.

Hey there! I went to school for finance, wrote the CFA exams and yes I work in the field (where I'm surrounded by incredibly bright individuals with much more knowledge than I'll ever have). I also make sure to research each topic before hand to ensure I get the facts straight. And I'm actually based out of Ottawa :) Thank you for the positive feedback!

So anyone want to buy my Plain Bagel shares at market value before they file for bankruptcy next week? So if no one is willing to buy them at fair value or at a deep discount, how do you get rid of them before said company fails?

Is there often room for arbitrage between a mutual fund unite and it's equivalent ETF unit? Or does that depend entirely on the market?
@ThePlainBagel
@ThePlainBagel 6 жыл бұрын
Sunny Mon one could argue that with ETFs you may get a better deal (ie a discount) for the same holdings as a mutual fund when the ETF trades below its NAV, however there’s no direct way to arbitrage. You can’t really convert between ETFs and mutual Funds, and from my understanding a discount on an ETF often stays consistent over time. So if an ETF is 5% cheaper than a mutual fund with the same holdings, then that 5% discount will typically be present through ups and downs in the market. As such it’s hard to arbitrage a profit with ETFs, mind you it would be difficult to find an ETF and mutual with the same holdings and weights. Thanks for the question! I may include it in the next Q&A video :)

Loved following your videos with a refreshing Canadian view since many videos regarding investing on KZfaq take the perspective of American or European markets. I just got into robo-investing myself (slowly moving from active to passive due to personal daily workload, and can't keep tracking them while working on the clock) and I noticed some investment firms like BMO, RBC, and WealthSimple offered investing options to me regarding ESG (Environment, Social Responsibility, Corporate Governance) investing. I wonder if you can do a video on ESG investing, funds, and how different they are from conventional funds, what are the advantages, disadvantages, etc.?

@@ThePlainBagel You can also add SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) as well. :) From what I heard in a nutshell, it's less about finances and more about social impact whereas ESG it's the other way around (finance first, social responsibility second). Something I hear around "millennial investor" peers of mine...

So an ETF is the common shares we buy through a broker???
@ThePlainBagel
@ThePlainBagel 4 жыл бұрын
An ETF is just a basket of stocks, like a mutual fund, and investors buy units that represent a share of the pool (if you buy 1% of the units, you own 1% of the stocks within the ETF). The units are simply sold on an exchange like stocks are. Hope that clears things up.
