In the words of Project Binky - "make the noise"! Nice new toy Charlie and it's good that it showed up the error in the helix before you got any further on. And possibly consigned what turned out to be perfectly good locos to the scrap heap. It has probably paid for itself already in that regard. Having seen the amount of engineering you've put into this helix I now realise mine was doomed to failure from the start, but we live and learn! Cheers

Nice vid. All of this is a good reminder that planning the helix is crucial. The rise must be enough to clear the track below, allowing for the thickness of roadbed, upon completion of the first revolution. The radius needed to do that can be calculated as the rise divided by the quantity of the decimal of the grade percent, pi, and 2. Ex: for an N scale helix rising 2.75" each revolution, the radius curve for a 1% grade is 2.75/(.01*3.14*2). About 44".

The human eye is a weird thing right enough. Perfectly laid, dead straight tracks can look 𝑠𝑜 good but there's something about long, sweeping curves that are really pleasing on the eye. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be as effective on a single track, or maybe that's just me. I always think that a single track looks best with curves all over the place; seems to be quite 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 too. It's hard to tell how the new bit is going to look; we'll get a better idea when the rising gradient to Barnstaple gets installed but, so far, it's looking great Charlie.👍👌😁

Dear Sir, "MDF is a product made by the devil..." I loved it! I made the grave mistake of using MDF for me "control table" and had all sorts of trouble. So i made several alternate meanings for the bloody material. I dare not write them here, as it would be extremely ungentlemanlike (even with them being in portuguese), with the exception of "Material Defective from Factory." Cheers from Brazil!

Hello Charlie. Success well done. The mini level makes a difference in this height & carpentry format for the model railroad. Couplers are tricky due to their shanks sometimes annoying depending on the car body from the coaches. Well like the Chessie System old logo : "For Progress" your layout is working well I'm pleased , as for the half inch plywood or 1/4 inch hopefully you'll get a good quality soon. I know this lockdown is a headache. I'm backed up here in the states with a lot of other wood related & plastic projects. What a fantastic result Charlie! Those Hornby Pullmans make or break for most locos with their pick up arrangements behaving like handbrakes, fantastic to see the stock conquer the grade. I'm not looking forward to doing my 4 lane helix shortly but the digital level is certainly the way forward. Will look fantastic once the scenery is complete!

@@ChadwickModelRailway No not at all Charlie! What a terrifying thought 😂 My monstrosity will be using a minimum internal radius of 1600mm to 1800mm. Jason Woods "The escarpment" layout has set the standard for helix builds, so I think the bar has been set. Regards, Ben.

Hi Charlie. I'm so glad you have sorted out your problem with the helix. It's far better to sort it out now at this stage, as it would be very disappointing to see all your time and hard work go to waste. We are now seeing that all your efforts are starting to pay off. Keep up the good work. Cheers Chris.

Thanks for a good video, especially about doing inclines as I need to do some alterations on mine as small locos just spin on the spot on a section of incline to the Branchline. Plus thanks for highlighting the spirit level will invest in one of them.

Hi Charlie, finding it difficult to think of any higher praise for your modelling, photography and presentation skills, this is absolutely gold dust, better than some of the rubbish on the BBC. Since we are all getting nostalgic this week, I think you would have been great on Blue Peter, although I haven’t seen any sticky back plastic on the layout. As some of the other people have said, don’t put yourself out too much on the new schedule, if anything, the lockdown is teaching us all to be patient. Well done Charlie.

Charlie, that is coming along nicely. Looks awesome with the sweeping curves. The helix is always fun to watch the trains climb it and break to the new scene.
