MANASIS PRESENTS:
FOLKLORIC DANCE CONCERT, 2006
Saturday 2nd December, 2006
Dallas Brooks Hall, Melbourne
Dances from Thessaly, Central Greece, Peloponnese
________________________________
We all strive for a sense of belonging, a sense of identity. Through various mediums, we search to find methods of expressing our emotions. Dance, has always been an expression of belonging and identity in all cultures. It erupts from the very essence of our soul. Yes, to dance is to live, but to dance Greek is to embrace life.
From the motherland they came, from every corner of Greece- from the mountains and plains, from the villages and cities. Our forefathers, brought with them cultural treasures; traditions and customs which survived the ravages of time, war, poverty and suffering. This simple venture for a better life, continued the handing down of our identity from generation to generation- a cycle which enriches our lives with every passing day, right here in this wonderful country of ours, Australia.
It is of immense importance, and of national pride that we too in turn, pass down our identity to what we now recognise as the 3rd and 4th generation. Just as important is the sense of family pride. Now in its second era, the MANASIS School of Greek Dance and Culture has too been passed down from father to son.
In 1988, in the very same seats in which you sit now, the audience was captured by the magic of the dancers who presented the original Folkloric Dance Concert- the concert which set the benchmark for Greek dance. Tonight, 18 years later, we find ourselves continuing that legacy, passing down our teachings, our wisdom, and our style.
The years may pass, the memories may fade, but here in Australia, in the hearts of these students, and through the teachings of our school, Hellenism lives on. We must move forward. We must embrace tradition, and use it as a guide to appreciate and further develop our culture; not to take advantage of it, and use it as an excuse to merely maintain it.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the MANASIS School of Greek Dance and Culture’s Folkloric Dance Concert, 2006. Tonight we present to you music and dance from all regions of Greece. A fusion of yesterday with today, and today with tomorrow, let tonight be the true definition of “paradosis”.

It is a traditional shepherd's song called "Bikan ta gidia sto mantri" ("The goats are in the pen"). The guy who sings is a shepherd who finishes his daily work and admires the girls, especially Chisoula, another shepherdess. He sings to her to harry up and teases her to finish her job quickly, so they can meet later.

Maybe someone can help me... I used to know this Greek dance that required a guy and girl and the guy and girl couldn't let go of each others hands and you'd kept getting spun around each other and you'd dance in the circle at the same time. You'd let go of hands eventually to swap partners at one point and at another, all the girls would go into the middle and dance, then all the boys would go into the middle and dance... (It was fun!) But i don't remember what it was called! It's killing me!

I hate to burst everyone's bubble but lets be clear about what this is. This group is well trained and very precise but they are not presenting traditional dances from Thessalia. This is a theatrical presentation which is highly choreographed. I hope people don't think this is how the dances are supposed to look.

My worry is that many people do NOT know the difference and the fact that you present without a parenthesis explaining what it is and also because the show is done in traditional costumes, people will be misled. Your modern bracket is excellent. The others are very misleading and should not be done in traditional costume. It gives the impression that the presentation is showing traditional dances.
