I saw Mance Lipsomb at the Rubiyat Club in Dallas in 1969. We sat at a small table right in front. Him playing that Harmony Sovereign was quite the experience. He was in his 60s probably at that time. That event burned my love of the Blues right into my soul.

When his music was first released on the Arhoolie label, he caused a sensation among us country blues lovers. He caused me to integrate that monotonic bass into my playing. He is the embodiment of the songster; player of blues and other music such as traditional folk and gospel.

We saw him in KC about 1972. He had a solid gold guitar in his tooth.

Ruth Rodriguez Every aspiring guitarist NEEDS to listen to Mance's playing. There are licks in there that, I'm sure, haven't been heard elsewhere even until today.

Steve Earle's story is just has good. Though he was officially born in Tennessee because his father was military, his grandma was so adamant about the first soil his feet touched was Texan they had a jar of soil to dip his feet in. Ultimately he would spend his formative years in Texas and most of his adult years in Tennessee. When he wasn't on tour that is. He now resides in NYC.

@@billhughes5638 fun fact they tried to give him a fancy Gibson and he couldn't play it. The neck and the action was too good. He was so used to playing his warped and bent Harmony Sovereign, so used to bending and manipulating them to play in tune that he just couldn't switch. So there's a lesson about learning on less than playable gear. He would often have that, I want to say it was a Hummingbird or a Dove, on a stand on stage while he played because it was 'so pretty.'

Heard him play many times. Got to talk to him. He was a sweet person, who grew up amid violence and prejudice. Funny side note: I saw his name in a 1918 story of the local boys called up to fight the Kaiser in WW-I. Mance's name was there with my grandfather and great-uncle. My aunt had kept the paper after my grandfather died. On one of his albums, he sings the old Doughboy song "It's a Long Way to Tipperarry."

What I love about Mance is someone literally found him playing on the porch. He was totally astounded that people would pay him for what he had been doing for fun all of those years.

Not too many people still play Mance Lipscomb's tunes - but Robert Thomas of Packrat's Smokehouse (New Smyrna Beach FL) does. They do "One Thin Dime" in their electric set and Robert aka Lightning Boy does a complete acoustic set of Mr. Lipscomb's songs. The acoustic set is very true to the original Mance style.

Thanks for the tip. I'll be in NSB, Florida soon I'll be checking it out. I play some of his style. Until I heard his playing, I couldn't relate to the idea of the monotonic bass, as opposed to John Hurt's alternating bass. But Mance takes a back seat to no one.

I wonder why Mance and the audience were laughing so much. I'm not trying to sound like a killjoy or anything, but, I'm intrigued to know what they found so amusing at the time... Perhaps I'm just oblivious to the possibility that they all had a joint or two before the show, including Mance.
@ruthrodriguez1411
@ruthrodriguez1411 9 жыл бұрын
Wishful thinking on the joint being passed around. Let me ask you this. Has not your heart ever been so full at any moment in your life when, it seems and feels, like there could be no higher moment of joy? My guess is this performance was one of those precious, once-in-a-lifetime, human moments. Hope you get that some day, many times.
