"We were the lighthouses of Europe - shining out, steering people back out of the darkness. Maybe we should connect back to who we are inside first and to the land that nourishes us.."
Manchán Magan {Playwright, Author} speaks to a live audience at We Need To Talk About Ireland. This event was produced by The Trailblazery at The Round Room, The Mansion House, Dublin, Ireland on March 17 2014.

Wonderful as always Manchán, by the way there were no English men in the 5th century but there were Romanised Britons. I'd love a chat with this man.

He literally just told the Irish people to forsake Christ and take up the serpent.

We were not ... the bastions of culture the monasteries were .. you speak as if the whole island was a monastic space ship of culture .Great espousel of fanciful theories ..."the gods of every raindrop " like every rain drop Magán...?.gods of rain yes perhaps but every raindrop .. eh ..hardly.....plus he clichéd image of Goths suddenly "sweeping" down over Europe and destroying high learning.. high learning never got destroyed the Goths (and other tribes) soon adopted Ariann Christianity bringing them in conflict with Rome... ..he also makes it sound like the sudden collapse of the Roman empire .. it was long and slow and many aspects of roman culture survived . The irish monks played their role .. but let's not get carried away that they somehow saved "western civilisation" ...snakes.....Mangan I think you'll find there never were any snakes in ireland ... it's a metaphor perhaps Later historians of St patrick used for 'beliefs banished by Christianity. " . Anyway main thing is Mangán yer a quare waffler .. fair play to ye as long as we don't take ye too literally. .sure we'll be grand..

I think he knows there were no snakes... Did you think he was saying we need literal snakes in Ireland? Hahaha. You are right about Irish monks importance being exaggerated... Though my assumption is ge was trying to make a simple point

@@nedohamilli I would agree if the video was longer. But I don't think anyone can get much nuance into 5 minutes. There's a time and place for everything, even simplification...

You're taking what he's saying too literally. Have another listen, with a cup of rain tea and a drop of honeysuckle.
