We'll pass Manchester's gay village surrounding Canal Street, the peaceful Sackville Gardens where Colin tells the heartbreaking story of Alan Turing before joining the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Junction and head out towards the Old Trafford stadium, home to Manchester United.

Steve Jobs was asked by Stephen Fry if the Apple Logo (an Apple with a bite out of it) was an intentional homage to Alan Turing. Jobs’ reply was that it was not but when he learned of Turing’s unfortunate treatment, he wished that it was.

@Daniel Hostetler I was thinking the same thing. How cruel to put anyone through such mental torture just for who they love. Even though we have moved forward since then I still feel ashamed that a 'civilised' society could treat Turing in such a way. 😔

Wow Matt that’s a great story. Big respect to your grandmother. The work those people did literally turned the outcome of WW2. Until the enigma code was cracked literally tens of thousands of merchant and Royal Navy sailors were losing their lives due to being sunk by German U boats and we were weeks away from starvation, in fact that was Hitlers plan to starve us into submission. Thankfully because of people like Alan Turing and your grandmother that never happened And also saved millions in the process🇬🇧🙏🏼👍

🇨🇦❤️Thanks for another great visit. I hadn’t heard of Alan Turing until I watched The Imitation Game. Mr. Turing died a couple of months before I was born and along with all of those that fought in the war, he’s one of the many people that sacrificed so much and are responsible for my freedom. I’m happy that the story of his life is now well known and celebrated. Although things have improved, there’s still a long way to go to stop the terrible ignorance and hatred that has destroyed too many lives. We need to be vigilant and follow the examples of loving kindness that illustrates that we’re doing our best and that love is love.

Hello from Paducah, Kentucky USA. Love your show. Glad you did a piece on Alan Turing. I saw the movie The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch. I cannot believe a court in England did not recognize the hero he was and the lives he saved and how the war was shorten. If there is a God in heaven, which I believe there is, he is being rewarded for what he did for all of us in WW2. Keep giving us the great shows. Love them.

My 12 year old autistic son recently watched your video about autism and wanted to send you this poem he wrote last week for autism awareness... Autism makes me different In many, many ways, Sometimes I don't see clearly It can be a bit of a haze. At times I talk in a different voice Or struggle to use words at all, When I can't deal with the world around me I bang my head against the wall. Some people call me names Full of hate, cruelty and spite, These words really hurt me Until I cry myself to sleep at night. So remember I might be different But I'm also just the same, Autism isn't all I am I also have a name.

So congratulations, and thanks, on bringing us some wonderful images of Manchester. And, Colin, it's good to see you sending Shaun (and his muscles) to defend you from the rif-raf in Manchester! And, lovely to see the memorial to Alan Turing. My late great friend Mavis Batey, who cracked codes at Bletchley Park, said Alan was often away in a world of his own, drifting off into the gardens at Bletchley in his slippers, and on arriving at the pond and realising there was nowhere to put his mug of tea, just chucking the empty cuppa into the pond. The hacienda - a mate of mine designed the loos! His first job - as it were. I kept expecting Martin and James to turn up and lead you off down some tunnel… Glad he got a plug! Cha- boom- Cha!

Omg. I watch your videos religiously every week guys. This weeks felt so special to me. My parents used to own a narrow boat and I joined them nearly 20 years ago in Manchester when they were moored at Castlefield and we went opposite way to to you and up Canal Street. Having only just told them I was gay to go there was an eye opener for us all. The bars were packed and we got stuck in a very leaky lock. Lots of guys lept over the wall from having a pint and helped us push the leaking gates shut so the water could equalise and we could get out. I will always remember my Dad saying to me “aren’t the gays helpful”. As it’s nearly 6 years since we lost Dad to see these sights again and remember the times I spent with him and mum and the boat brings a tear to my eye. Thanks for an absolutely fantastic vlog this week. Meant so much to me and brought me so many happy memories. ❤️

a couple of years ago my son was on the rochdale in his boat (my first boat) heading west and there was so little water in the canal they were closing it behind him, he was dragging his boat out and into locks by rope (he is a big lad mind) he ended up right in the middle of Manchester on / around canal street for 8 months outside a marina, i don't remember the lock number though. During this time he was warned by people about how his windows will be broken etc..... not once did he have any problems, got to know the locals and because he was bought up in a traveling circus he knows how to deal with pretty much anyone and they would bring him milk and bread and beer.... Do NOT PLAN to come up through selby (though would be lovely to meet you as i am on the selby canal myself) as the canal swing bridge is bust at the basin onto the ouse (up to york / rippon) or Goole because of the leaking aire and caulder at new junction...... good luck...... x x

As a same-sex couple (only16 years together) we sometimes question how far we’ve come with equality, rights and acceptance. Your remarkable vlog is confirmation that things have improved significantly. Symbolically, from the famous Canal St. Clubs to a married same-sex couple passing by Canal St. in their narrowboat as home and family perhaps marks those changes. However, we’re still reminded that it was a very different world not so long ago. Your tribute to Alan Turing was a reminder of just how far we’ve come, and, the futility of war. Colin, we feel this vlog is one of your finest. It’s touches so many remarkable aspects of Canal life with your superb photography, historical information and the delightful connection you have with each other. The city landscape of the Canal network (Manchester) is eye-opening and proves that the British Canal network really is a wonder of the world. BTW, Shaun, if my partner had said what’s for tea after doing all of those locks, to put it nicely I’d have replied “only you would know that, your making it” 😂😂😂🤗

Yes and Alan Turing being one of the biggest victims. Saved his country from total destruction, saved the lives of millions of people especially merchant and Navy sailors who were being sunk by Hitlers U boats bringing in vital supplies like food and ammunition to help keep the war effort going and his thanks from the government was them turning their backs on him just because he was gay. Had Hitler and Germany invaded Britain its doest bear worth thinking about the consequences? Especially as Hitler sent gay people straight to the gas chambers. Just the thought of it is truly awful.

One of your best in my view. Two segments touched me on a personal note. The part on Sackville Gardens made me think of my ex, Jackie, whom being transgender have had to withstand not only degrading words from random people in the streets, at restaurants and so on, but also physical abuse at times. You then mentioned Alan Turing, the father of computers as we know them, who was gay. He ended his life not being allowed to live as the person he was. It led me to this; Today it's been 380 days since my current boyfriend Xavier and I parted at an airport some 10000 kilometers from where I live. Covid have made it impossible for us to reunite, as we don't have the same citizenship. It's not as final as Turings destiny, I know that, but still, living apart, only being able to be together on Skype is tough. If we'd been married it would have been different, but same sex marriages aren't allowed where Xae lives. So thank you guys for this installation. It's nice to know there are people who think and feel in the world. You certainly are two of these.

My fascination with the British Canal system started in Manchester. A friend of mine lives near the Thomas Telford Basin and during our trip we stayed along Canal Street. I was fascinated by the locks, the tow paths, and history. I took a zillion pictures near where you moored. Found your channel back in May…and have been going through all the videos from the beginning. So happy to get to this episode!

I very much enjoyed this one Colin and Shaun. I'm a huge WWII history fan and I so much appreciate the recognition you both gave to Alan Turing. I believe that it is quite possible, this man may be responsible for saving more lives in this war, than perhaps any other person. I do know that Britain did name a Traffic Circle after him, but few people today know who he is. Those nine locks seem to cause quite a lot of trouble for many boaters, probably not a route for newbies to try out, but the city does seem to possess quite a bit of character. One question doers come to mind, how did you manage to stay the night in that private mooring? Take very good care guy's and thanks again for another amazing video ;)

Out to the North East of Manchester the main road that runs past, The Ethiad Stadium, Manchester City's home ground, is called, Alan Turing Way. He is well known and well remembered all over Manchester. I used to work in Jersey (Channel Islands) quite often and in one care home I visited, a lady there actually worked at Bletchley Park with Turing, although she didn't like him much.

I'll never forget taking our 68' hire boat out of lock 84 in about 1989, under the buildings. There were no lights so it was like a cavern & the towpath was lower than the water level so the whole area beneath the buildings was flooded like a lagoon from a gothic horror. I kept expecting the phantom of the opera to go past on his gondola!

Getting to Waters Meeting just in time for the Trafford Centre reopening, which might have a massive Super Dry shop... Alan Turing Way is the name of the Eastern Side of the inner ring road, by Man City and more Trams, next to the Ashton Canal. An Alan Turing mural is next to Southern Cemetery on Princess Road (A5103) the main arterial road southwards. As for lock 84, my enamel mug made a bid to become a canal boat a couple of weeks ago crossing the lock gates, got it back and didn't lose my bike or bum-bag with tools & tubes! just not able to have a brew :( I wouldn't be here, subbed, if not for Martin, that trap door and the Rochdale being an local canal :)

Bravo!!!! Colin and Shawn, This vlog is amazing. It's literally chock ful of sights and information. Like you pulled out all the stops and let the information flow. Washing over us like canal water over the top of the lock. You navigated through a totally built landscape and its History both physical and Human. I am glad that the Canal system has survived through time and the built environment had reporposed around it. The Human environment is still messy and the underbelly of racism, homophobia and excess still move with us through time. Thank you for sharing with us that some reflection has taken place and past wrongs have been acknowledged and addressed. You passed under a railway bridge that passed over the canal at forty five degrees to the canal .I thought it is a piece of Industrial Art. The way that cut stone and cast iron was used so beautifuly. The design and excution of that work shows that the designer and builder had a great esthetic.. And thats only one of the many many things you put in the vlog today, My hat's off to you Guys, Stay safe ..Excellent ,Excellent !!!!!!!!!!

@@matty6848 Yes, I saw it when it was released. Some differing opinions on its accuracy in places, but overall a good film. Alan's other work in areas like developmental biology were also ground-breaking. His apparent suicide has been brought into question many times, not least by his acquaintances. Genius is an oft over-used descriptor, but in Alan's case it was entirely accurate.
