I’ve been using SailRail from Manchester Piccadilly (platform 13 - hate that platform miles away with a passion, especially if coming into Piccadilly from Metrolink trams from Shudehill/Market St) to Holyhead via Chester for some years now, both summer and winter, connecting with both daytime and overnight Irish Ferries sailings home to Dublin and at Chester, I’ve occasionally got these Avanti trains to Holyhead - what I most appreciate about these trains is the luggage space which is very rarely available on Transport for Wales trains, which are tiny compared to even Northern Rail - on Avanti, even during busy trains, you always have plenty of luggage space and Avanti Trains most closely resemble Irish Rail’s standard trains out of Dublin Connolly & Dublin Hueston to Cork, Limerick, Westport/Ballina, Galway, Tralee, Waterford, Rosslare, Drogheda, Dundalk and Sligo

From KZfaq videos that I have seen on the North East Corridor (NEC), especially the Acella, the passenger hears a similar track sound to the UK West Coast Mail Line (WCML) on a Pendilino. It’s a sort of whirring noise with some gentle banshee howl that seems to fade and crescendo periodically.

When I travelled between Glasgow and London, if I was lucky, my train to Glasgow’s first class ticket would be only a tad bit more expensive; and would always be exited for sitting in that seat too aha! Do miss travelling the West Coast Mainline!

Nice vlog G. I’ve ridden Avanti First Class a few times before. They should have a few more vegan options yes and they should make sure the first class lounge at Manchester Piccadilly is open. I can go Manchester direct now as one of the Manchester trains now calls at Rugby. Also I was actually filming a new year’s special on wcml south at Hemel Hempstead when you passed by at speed but sadly I don’t think I have a clip of 390112 lol. Merry Christmas 🎄

Last week it was very bad here in snow and it wasn't enjoyable working especially getting stuck up hills in a work van but this time round I haven't slipped over snow or ice lol. You can't beat 1st Class LNER to London imo. Even better if you can get on the older HST ones with comfy leather seats.

LNER withdrew all their HSTs in 2019. The only passenger use of HSTs now is by CrossCountry plus the shortened set operations: GWR "Castle Class" between Cardiff and Penzance, also ScotRail. GWR have recently announced their plans to phase out all HST operations by the end of 2023. ScotRail seems keen to move on from the HST also, especially after the poor crashworthiness compared to more modern stock was shown up by the Carmont derailment. CrossCountry makes limited use of their HSTs between Edinburgh and Plymouth. I can't see any of the mainline HST passenger operations lasting much longer.

Brilliant Christmas video G, looks like you've enjoyed first class with Avanti. I've not traveled first class on any train myself but it would be an intersting thing to try out to be honest. Manchester to London via Crewe never called at Stafford (a few services did) but as of the December timetable change on the 11th December they added Stafford in as a extra stop, in fact Stafford gain a North Wales/Chester service and the Glasgow/Edinburgh services via Birmingham New Street but lost the Avanti Liverpool Lime Street services, great vlog G and have a lovely Christmas.

You can't beat a pendo first class. In the past I've done several 1st class All Line Rovers (ALR) and loved all the free food and drinks, including the use of the 1st class lounges. Having 1/3rd off, senior rail card holder, makes ALR's affordable.

That sounds good Peter. I'm hoping to have a ALR sometime this summer, and I am hoping that it will be a 1st class one this time around. I had a couple of 14 day ALR's many years ago and covered many miles in the 2 weeks. That was in the days before the pendo's arrived on the hauled stock. One of the guards (conductors) said to me on checking my ALR "you should have bought the 1st class one because you could then claim all the free food and drink we offer to 1st class customers!" At the time I was unaware of that so missed out on a nice meal and snacks. Yes, a senior railcard does make them affordable - just like my disabled persons railcard allowed me to have mine. Now I have got my senior railcard I think my future tickets will be 1st class trips. The only drawback now is that you cannot use the pendo's from Euston before 10am with an ALR if I understand the restrictions correctly?

@@Snapdragon4472 Yes Euston and Kings Cross are a bit of a pain, with the 10am restriction. I live in Hertfordshire. To go "upwards" 😀 from KX I've used Grand Central and Hull trains, there no restrictions with those TOC's. On a technicality you could use Advanti, just buy a to South Hampstead because you haven't got on at Euston with ALR but you may have to put up a good arguement with the train manager. 🤐

Mm young Miss G, enjoyed this. Every 2nd year I have a Glasgow Confce. So adv booking and with a Railcard, I go 1st class up Avanti (Euston to Glasgow C) and then back, via Scotrail (std) and then LNER 1st class (so: Glasgow to Edinburgh to Kings X). And with that adv bkng and railcard reduction, I'm fed both ways. (I'm not vegan, tho I do know someone senior in the V Society.) And in some cases, my fares are less than anyone booking later but only std class. And also that way I get a great carriage view on both west and east coasts- esp the east coast. Best wishes..

Made this trip in March with my Mum. Our booked standard class was cancelled so they kindly gave us a free upgrade. The last time Mum had travelled to London was in a Minivan at the end of the swinging '60s so needless to say this journey was much more comfortable & a lot faster!

Actually after electrification in 1966 the Manchester Pullman to London took 2 and a half hours, so not much faster in nearly 60 years, and given the number of delays probably no difference.

Brilliant.In my neck of the woods it's LNER Azuma that offers bargains in first class split fares.For those travelling solo,single seats are on seaside side😀 Service is great, really friendly staff and always good to know there's a reliable bog at journey's end. Edinburgh lounge offers you train views from your 1st floor seat.(no,not the bog)

An Idea of the state of UK rail. This May it took me longer to get from Wigan to Clitheroe, 3 hours 20 minutes (33 miles) than it took me to get from Agen to Paris 3 hours 12 minutes (330 miles). I also paid 30% more for Avanti first class than TGV first class for half the distance travelled.

To get into the Piccadilly First Class lounge you need to press the intercom and they’ll unlock the door. Looks like a great trip though!

I just wish that Avanti would do more direct trains from Manchester Piccadilly (or preferably Manchester Victoria) to Holyhead for SailRail to Dublin and I’ve already written to them about this

Gday G. Great video to round off the year. I did the same in September from the same seat Gla-Eus. Easy for the loo. Only difference was I had the full breakfast- twice! Once out of Glasgow then after Crewe they asked if I wanted anything and I said I’d had a breakfast they said well have it again! I did. Great to see snow as I haven’t seen it for yours. Only 37 Celsius on Xmas. day. ☀️ All the Best to you and all your subscribers from Perth Oz. Cheers. 😊

Merry Christmas G! Have been in the Manchester Picadilly lounge a few times. It's not that great but at least it's warm and you get a free drink or two while you wait. Last time I was there you had to be buzzed in for access....Nice to see you come South as well for a change! All the best for 2023.

And on a tangent you may have missed Felix and Bolt at Huddersfield but you did get the statue of my cat Trim in behind you at Euston station. My cat is named after the first cat to explore Australia. The original Trim's owner, Mathew Flinders, put Australia on the map. He was an officer in the Royal Navy who was given the tast of circumnavigating Australia and drawing the first complete map of Australia. He didn't invent the word Australia, from Terra Australis, Latin for Southern Land, but he chose to use the name of his map and it stuck. Anyway when Euston station was expanded for HS2 an old cemetery was dug up and Flinders coffin was found there. Hence why there is a statue of Flinders and Trim outside the station.
