ETH had a fairly similar setup at Ajax to what he has at United currently. The biggest hurdle has been the massive lack of quality, work rate, and technicality in the players he has available to him. His system requires lots of pressing and running (like, say, Klopp's Liverpool requires), but players like Eriksen, Casemiro, Evans, Maguire, AWB, Rashford, among a few others, physically cannot do it. Injuries have obviously been a massive hindrance in enforcing his playstyle, too. No Martinez, Shaw, or Varane for the majority of the season means the defense is crippled and Onana's only redeeming quality is irrelevant. Imagine Arsenal with no fit LBs for 70% of the season, Gabriel out for the entire season, Saliba out for a third of the games, and at one point literally no other fit CBs but Rob Holding (I know he's gone), Rice being gone for 2 months, etc. They wouldn't be the best defense in the league and certainly wouldn't be in the title race. It's not possible to keep up with all of those injuries and still enforce a style that those players physically can't play. Sure, ETH could cater to his available players and park the bus every game, but Ange got plaudits for refusing to go that route.
