Manchester United have completed some questionable transfers. But one stands above all others.
This is the story of Andy Kellett from League Two to the Premier League, from training with Angel Di Maria to roofing the houses of northern England.
Probably, Man Utd’s strangest-ever transfer.

As random as a 21 year old being loaned to Manchester United from Bolton is, surely paying £7.4m for Bebe, a player who Fergie openly admitted he had never seen play and had links with the national homeless squad, is far more random

@@mrartdeco United have many bizarre transfers to choose from…but none of the ones you’ve listed are strange at all! 😭 Maguire was a solid cb for Leicester for years so he was a sensible buy with premier league experience. Onana was a ball playing gk who (in theory) fits Ten Hag’s system. He even had the most clean sheets in the champions league the previous season. And Antony played for Ajax, Ten Hag’s former club so he was a known quantity. None of those transfers are strange at all, in fact they’re very regular (albeit overpriced in hindsight). Not every transfer will work out for a myriad of reasons. That’s just football for you

@@mrartdeco Maguire is a good defender who isn't suited for Ten Hag's style, Antony was starting to do well this before his case thingy started, Onana is struggling because most of Utd's defence is injured. I don't see how those 3 are strange transfers, maybe Antony can be termed as strange because apparently the board knew about his case and still signed him.

I don’t know. Maybe? We’re only hearing his side of the story so keep that at the back of the mind. But to fall to the 9th tier of english football before even hitting 30 even with injury issues is pretty extreme. I am a bit skeptical of whether his issues can be blamed solely on that.

@@spinyslasher6586 Yeah I've seen it happen to players in the team I support. We had a very promising centre-back who played in a Scottish Cup final at 17, won a Scottish Cup Final at 22 and got a couple of Scotland caps at 23... and by the age of 25 was playing in England's League Two, by 27 was playing in Scottish League One, then Scottish non-league and by the age of 28 was in the _Australian second-tier._ A whole heap of injuries just destroyed his career.

This really wasn't a strange transfer, it was a surprise when it happened but it made sense. LVG thought U21 success was important. United were chasing the U21 league title and were short at left back so brought in a reserve player capable of helping the U21s over the line.

Liverpool did a similar thing in the 10/11 season when they signed Conor Thomas from Championship side Coventry City, despite the fact he'd never played a league match in his career (only played in 2 FA Cup games). He was with the reserves, then got an injury Liverpool sent him back. Played 100 league game for Coventry, spent most of his career in Leagues 1 and 2, had one season in India, and now plays for Crewe Alexandra

Not sure if Tifo has made one for Arsenal, but a couple years ago they bought a 20y Norwegian winger from the 3. tier in Norway. George Lewis, if I remember correctly, he had never played any senior games in the Norwegian highest division and no one knew about him. He joined the U23 side, and stayed there for a couple of seasons. As of 2023 I believe his without a club lol, and never appeared for the main team.

When you are young and playing really well there are chances of playing for top teams without really having the skills to be there. But once you pass a certain age you better be the best in that position or you easily get shuffled downward fast. It's a brutal world of football, only a few % makes it.

Part of me wanted to say William Prunier. Brought in on trial in 1996 as a short term replacement for an injured Bruce & Pallister. Was seen as a solid replacement, downside was absolutely nobody knew who Prunier was, or much about him as a player, aside that Cantona knew him from playeing as Auxerre and Bordeaux. Played well on his debut but than had an awful game against Spurs. Apparently he was only ever given a trial contract but later he revealed he had been offered a 3 year old deal but due to his anonymity and lack of playing time in the French league, no agent or coach would vouch for him or fully represent him. He went on to play for Napoli, Hearts, Montpellier, Al-Sillya and Tolouse.

I suppose it goes to show the realities players face at the lower levels of the Football League…. The gulf between Premier League & upper end Championship levels compared to the rest of the pyramid is massive. I don’t mean quality wise really. This lad is a roofer and working for BT after playing football, whereas most young players who’ve played a handful of Premier League games will likely never have to work again. The top end of the sport is so far removed from the lower ends now, it’s mad.

there doesn't seem to be anything strange about this transfer at all. He was a young player who was playing well, and by the sounds of it he did pretty well while he was there, albeit in the reserves. Its not like they paid a ridiculous amount of money for him or that they bought him expecting him to be the first choice left back. Then it seems he had some injuries and his career went down hill. But there doesn't seem to be anything particularly strange about the transfer itself.
