“Bandolim” is Portuguese for Mandolin 😂. They sound the same, although the Brazilian style has a deeper body, therefore more bass. Great video! I love mandolins.

I don't know if it's because I'm Brazilian, but the bandolim sound is very beautiful! even more if accompanied by a cavaquinho, making a samba-choro, such as "Naquela mesa" which is a tribute to the father of the composer who was the best Bandolinista (mandolinist).

I love the sound of the bandolim! For me, I hear more bottom end. The low end "punch" makes it sound good, even without a bass or guitar accompanying it.

I love Gianninni bandolim, I have one for many years, very good instrument. The sound is a bit different with other mandolins, but every instrument has his own voice, that why it is so nice to have a few to play.

I believe the video brings out a fair comparison that highlights some tonal difference between a "conventional" A style mandolin and the bandolim. I own a Brazilian Giannini bandolim like in the video and also have a Swedish made A style and an American made A style. There are more commonalities than differences. Sometimes I can only have one with me when I travel and I end up playing different style or genres of music. Any of my 3 mandolins can and do substitute for any of the others out of necessity. Essentially a mandolin is a mandolin. That includes the F style and round back mandolins too. One can play rhythm and leads on any of them effectively. The musician is more important than the instrument. Muchas gracias.

Very nice comparison video for hearing the tonal difference. I am discovering a preference for oval hole tone as a "solo" player of international folk music. While the "f" holes might cut through an ensemble when playing bluegrass, the oval hole seems sweeter and more balanced with better low end.

The main difference between them is their role in music. The mandolin is used to play rythm, and sound better when played in full chords. The brazilian Bandolin was designed for melodies, playing mostly one note at a time, so individual notes soud better, but chords don't (to a certain degree). If you want, I can send you links to hear and see the difference in both musical roles

Difficult comparison, because they are both out of tune; The Fender's low (G & D) strings are colored (string pairs slightly out of unison), but the Gianini's higher (A & E) strings are also slightly off. I will disagree with anyone who says one or the other is better for classical, bluegrass, melody, rhythm or whatever. They are both _mandolins_ -fine for anything! ☺ (I have one of the Fenders, with the adjustable bridge swapped out for a solid bridge with lower action.) From what I can tell with the existing disparate tuning, the Brazilian still has a warmer voice overall. I would love to hear one with F holes. ☺🎹🎶💋🌹

The fact that these instruments are both (slightly) out of tune it is true, although I personally find your comment a bit on the snobby side, I don't see any reason why you couln't tell the difference in sound beetween the two, as a matter of fact You end up saying something about the sound.

thanks for this comparison, I play mandolin, and mostly the bandolim reminds me to the portugese guitar. Which kind of strings did You use? Special bandolim-strings? are they thinner? For my german bowlback-mandolin I only use the flat wounded Thomas-Infild Strings. Otherwise it sound the same like amarican F- or even A-models. Here in germany, in orchestras, I never have seen or heard other strings than flat wounded strings. Perhaps a video with the comparison of strings makes the differnece. best regards.

A bit more metallic sound and more accurate intonation. The nut is only for directing the strings. Although, in some really really cheap instruments you will see a zero fret as well, because it is easier to make the zero fret then to make a perfect nut.

I really love that bandolim. It is from 1979 and it sounds really good. That Fender mandolin is not that great like the most cheap mandolin. But, there are some good mandolins that I like as well, still on the "cheap side" and not vintage Gibsons... like some Loar, Kentucky, some Eastman. The bandolim has a bigger sound because of the body shape, great for blues and more for soloing . I wouldn't take it for bluegrass though....

I'm learning bandolim in Brazil now. Quite difficult, comparing to electric and classical guitar. Mine bandolim, although was made by a luthier, was very cheap and need some adjustments, as it is a little stiff, hard to play (playing a F on first fret of E string is a pain...). Anyway, congratulation for both instruments and thank you for the comparison video.
7 жыл бұрын
i'm also learning bandolim here in Brazil and admit that first F on E string is a REAL pain. i don't know why, but bandolim has a first fret just after the nut... and that kills the sound in full chords. however, i'm dedicated to bluegrass, so i'm planning to buy a mandolin. thanks for the video!!

@@ised-5239 but we here in brazil modified the Bandolim so much it became kinda its own thing, but the cavaquinho remained mostly unchanged, its still more of a portuguese instrument. as ISE-D said, a TRUE brazilian string instrument is the Craviola. a moon shaped 12 stringed instrument made famous by Paulinho Nogueira a brazilian composer and the music teacher of the famous composer Toquinho... the Craviola was also played by Jimmy Page, he liked the instrument... but thats another history. \(^w^)/ Hope you liked the info dump.

Not a Robot Games Maybe Portuguese immigrants brought it to Brazil along with cavaquinho. And in Brazil cavaquinho was also modified and has slightly different appearances compared to original Portuguese cavaquinho.

Yes, the genealogy is the difference. Bandolim - arose from portuguese guitar. Mandolin - arose from violin in USA and Canada and was shaped as a trying to get a violin without bow, using just the hands. As we can see, the mandolin is a hidden fiddle, which discharged the bow.

Both arose from the Italian mandolino/neapolitan mandolin, the Brazilian with Portuguese guitar influenced, and the American is just a flatback Italian one
