+Neftali Santiago, thank you for posting this... As a 13 year old girl in philly Mandrill, War, Kool and the Gang and Grover Washington Jr. kept my mind at peace! The compilations, musical expertise fed my craving and love for music! Kissing 60 in the lips and I still love them! Symphonic Revolution, I refuse to smile, House of wood. Hell, Just Mandrill period!

Now this is what's missing today....real musicians....performing live..no audio tricks....just raw...God given talent....and no need for 10 half naked women dancing around to cover-up the fact that the talent is lacking....

From the moment I was spooked while looking through my uncles albums and came upon the Mandrill album... (the big Ape face startled me at my young age) I was hooked... I was a young sax player in 1971. From that moment on, I was hooked on Mandrill. . . saw them in Prospect Park Brooklyn in 2000?, Saw them at SOB's in NYC and saw them at BBKings theatre on 42nd street.... no band has quite the same funk flavor as Mandrill.. some have come close in other ways... EWF, Santana, War... and today Fela Kuti..

DJ Tony Vito! I really do appreciate your words. That Prospect Park Brooklyn was my first gig back with the band I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember feeling my drum solo. I have a video of that show I should put some songs up.
@avp07138 жыл бұрын
I have no words to describe that evening... I mean, to see Mandrill playing live IN BROOKLYN no less... just blocks from where they basically grew up.... and then also to have listened to, and played their music (with my own funk band, ECSTASY, Newburgh, NY)... it was too much for the senses. I couldn't even really relate it to the chick I brought to that concert because she was much younger than I. it was TOO real. Tony

My Soul aches for this music. Every member plays 5 or 6 instruments, and can sing on top of that! Just no comparison with todays music.
@lawrencebarr38205 жыл бұрын
Amazing...just amazing! BECAUSE there aren't people dedicated to the crafts of instruments today and in the past to bring what MANDRILL delivered to the stage.....meaning THE WORLD. PARLIMENT SAID ....TO......TAKE IT TO THE STAGE.....SUCKERS.......HE WAS TAKLING TO THESE LAZY MUSICIANS.
@Odawg965 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencebarr3820 I wouldn't say that. There are plenty of young people playing instruments, but there has been a concentrated effort to take the arts in general out of many school systems...public school music programs in particular. Back in the day, kids in the hood had access to instruments and at least one instructor at school. Today, schools are lucky to have a part-time instructor and parents have to fend for themselves when it comes to getting instruments. Meanwhile, the more affluent families send their kids to private schools and vote to de-fund the public schools. Their kids have access to the instruments and instructors...and today some of these trust fund kids are getting credit for "saving the music" (Snarky Puppy, the whole Daptone thing, etc.). Studying music has become a luxury unfortunately.
@lawrencebarr38205 жыл бұрын
@@Odawg96 can't argue with the war ON inner city CHILDREN. I see your point.I guess I was frustrated with drum machines and that STUPID electric voice SOUND "T". PAIN does.EVERY KID WANT TO RAP......AND DONT HAVE THE DISCIPLINE AND KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND THE LOGIC INVOLVED OR THE TRUTH OF THE FOUNDATION FOR RAP.....LIBERTY OR DEATH.... DEATH IS ALL WE GET.....OUR PEOPLES...OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE...OUR OWN LANGUAGE....OUR OWN RELIGION...OUR WEALTHY INHERITANCE, WE ARE THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE ON EARTH...YET THE MOST DISRESPECTED. WHY?! ....WE ALLOW IT....
@Odawg965 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencebarr3820 I hear you, and my opinion initially was similarly harsh...particularly since I'm a musician myself. Having school-age children in public school has been an eye-opening experience. Searching for a residence near a school with a FULL compliment of FULL-TIME fine arts instructors was a challenge. Then there is the magnet school issue. Kids audition for these magnet school programs for middle and high school. If your child is not zoned for an elementary school with full fine arts, they're already at a disadvantage. If your parents can't afford private lessons, the kids are at a deeper disadvantage. Yet when the magnet school audition happens, those kids have to compete against kids who have the best of everything during their elementary school years (maybe they even went to private school)...and inevitably they don't make the cut (and this is happening with more than just music; check out your own public school system for proof). So you can't be too hard on the young people today. They can't miss what they never had. Hip-hop--the commercial version--is what most of them know. It took me a long time to see that. But there are young people of color playing...in church, getting help from family, and even in some of those magnet programs. There's still hope.
@lawrencebarr38205 жыл бұрын
@@Odawg96 yes....the church...the one time foundation of the so-called "BLACK "community. Don't know what the " CHURCH " has become. The church used to be the bullseye ....know what I'm saying...these institutions you speak of used to target the church first.Now since the church is LITERALLY hiding behind RELIGION and separatist dog mentality we don't have a shield of faith so to speak. YEAH I lived in an impoverished area and watch my genius CHILDREN...I have two genius CHILDREN who suffered from impulsive nonrestrictive environmental penal trained educational design projects. I learned the basics then self TEACH...more like self medication in KNOWLEDGE. My children are brilliant but handicapped under the same systematic area code discrimination that you speak of.NOW WE ARE BEING DISTRACTED FROM THE REAL ISSUES .SMOKE AND MIRRORS DOG AND PONY SHOW .TRUMP.BIDEN.SANDERS.HARRIS....OBAMA AND THE WHOLE STAGE IS SET TO PUT ON A SHOW WHICH YOU WILL NEVER FORGET. Like night mare on elm street....better stay awake!

Unfortunately I moved 3 years later to Switzerland. I would have paid top-dollar to see these funk godfathers live here. These hermanos play some sweet funk 'n brass on this video. I guess I'll have to fly over to the states for that. However I have their full discography on vinyl which kinda makes up for that. Their later jazz-funk years (however overlooked) are very recommended.
