We started IEW level A Structure and Style with my 4th grader this year. He loves it! He actually asks to start it. He was such a reluctant writer and this is helping so so much. So glad we found this curriculum. I told him that he’s learning somethings that I didn’t learn until I was a freshman in HS that only that teacher taught me that helped me in college. I can only imagine what kind of writer I would’ve been with this type of curriculum. Highly recommend it

I started my son with only the Abeka curriculum in the 1st grade. I have since tried other curriculums I like better for some subjects, but I 100% agree with you that Abeka's phonics are AMAZING! The Language/Grammar books and their math books are what I intend to use through 12th grade.

We also love MFW! But only through 8th grade 🙈 For high school, we prefer Tapestry of Grace. We didn't like the Notgrass books used in HS. TOG isn't planned out every day like MFW, but has a weekly grid. History is chronological instead of broken into world and US history, so I feel it gives better context. Not knocking MFW, it works great for a lot of people!

My daughter does teaching textbooks for math but she also does Jump Math because it's what the Ontario curriculum is based on here in Canada. Language arts... I really need an "all in 1" program. We have a spelling book (soon to be 2- because I found the book we have too easy for her), we have a grammar book (Canadian Daily Grammar I think it's called.), we have a reading comprehension book... It's all separate. This year for writing we are doing Wordsmith Apprentice. I like it so far!

Awesome vid!! I use the teaching textbooks for math, abeka for L. A. and other curriculum for the science and S. S. My children are begging for Abeka and actually want to do LA while previous years it was a major struggle. I have 4 homeschool all in elementary and a 3 year old so timing and the desire for the kiddos wanting to learn is a major must!! Just a question, do you administor the LA for Abeka of do you use the disc where it's presented for them?

We had Teaching Textbooks in the Cd-rom era, too! The book you're holding is so familiar because we have the exact same one! We have used Abeka Language Arts for years, it's not necessarily the most "fun," but think the grammar is extremely solid (I credit Abeka with my perfect SAT and ACT English scores, because they were so thorough, haha!) But I agree with you that writing skills are SO important in college and in many careers these days, and it's a good idea to go even further with writing instruction.

If you are thinking about writing programs I would try Essentials in Writing. It comes with streaming video or DVDs that teach the videos in small chunks. IEW is very teacher intensive. Not that it makes it bad because my goal is not to bash. Just wanted to let you know my opinion. I’m using Essentials in Writing for my 8th grader this year to prepare him for high school. Here’s hoping, right? I had originally picked out Brave Writer originally and it wasn’t working for him or for me. So I had to pivot. But, Brave Writer (writing) is working for my 4th grader. Who knew? All the best to you. ♥️

I enjoyed this video so much! I have wanted to try the teaching textbooks but I have been concerned that it isn’t enough because kids find it so easy. It’s nice to hear that your boys did well on the testing. I do have one question. Why did you decide to go with Apologia for science instead of sticking with the My Fathers world suggested reading? Did you feel that MFW was lacking in science? I have heard some moms say that.

Hi- so I am new to homeschooling as well so kids not testing age yet, but I can help a little by saying you need to connect with the school district where you live as they should have homeschool coordinator to tell you what grades they do state tests ( usually 3,5,9...) and and what to do etc . here in tennesee we are to connect with the testing coordinator at school (in January)we are zoned for and they help set up testing options/locations - i believe there are a few options but one at school district location. I was also told we could ask to do grade level tests any year if we wanted to see how kids are progressing etc Also if very new good to make sure you are up on state requirements for filing intent to homeschool and other required paperwork.

I would love to know if you would recommend abeka for a child with adhd who hates language arts and a mom who has adhd and always struggled with English? I could write papers fine, I loved literature, & I was always in the top reading group in our class at school. However, when it came to knowing anything beyond a noun and a verb it was like trying to read a foreign language! I hated it! And they made us diagram sentences. I would have rather laid on the floor & someone just beat me instead. I still struggle with that to this day! I’ve had to pull my 12yr old 7th grade daughter out mid year to homeschool and we’ve already found one program we don’t like in one subject. I did pick and chose and didn’t just go with one publisher for all our subjects. We are doing daily grams & easy grammar plus to start with and it seems ok. I did also purchase writing strands by master books per a friend and it’s over both of our heads. I’m sending it back. I was so frustrated that I was so overwhelmed by it. I am making her do a journal entry daily for now. Any ideas on what I should replace writing strands with? IEW? Abeka? This is and always has been her weakest area so I plan to spend the most time on it. I want her to be able to master it even if we have to repeat the 7th grade or drop back to the 6th grade. I also started with teaching textbooks for 7th grade and because her public school teacher skipped Roman numerals she was adamant she would never use them. So I ordered master books math but I love math and I don’t like it! It’s way too much reading and not enough math. We may need to try the teaching textbooks again at the 6th grade level even if she breezes thru. I have ordered the physical math book from easy peasy. I have a friend doing it so I thought I could at least use it as a supplement. I don’t know anything about it though. We did go with master books history, I also chose 2 sciences to do because math & science are my thing. So we are starting with basic science and also an applied science of engineering. I love how God is the center of both subjects! At least one of my 5 kids are getting some amazing educational material. I have 2 that have graduated. One graduated college with a degree in accounting and works for our local power company managing the new internet accounts. My 2nd daughter is in nursing school right now but has another year to go and plans to continue until she gets her nurse practitioners degree. My 3rd, 17yr old son, is a senior in high school but taking college courses thru dual enrollment. Then my 12yr old son is in the 7th grade and has all A’s. He’s happy as can be where he is. We live in a very small community with a small county school not a mile from our house. Most of the teachers were students here as well. It’s a great community. My 12yr old daughter was just being bullied and didn’t tell anyone till she was convinced by them she is an idiot and should give up. After flunking the 2nd 9 weeks of school and telling me she wanted to end her life we took drastic measures. We didn’t take it lightly. She wanted to be home schooled and that was all she wanted. Since she’s lost all her self confidence I agreed even though I’m terrified at age 45 my brain isn’t sharp enough for this! I’ve done more praying this past year and this year than I ever have! I do want to keep her on a grade level even if we go back one year just so if she wants to go back for high school she has that option though I highly doubt she will. We also have an amazing Christian lead homeschool group that covers a few counties in our area that offer great extra curricular activities and enrichment classes along with social events if you want to become a member. Because their enrollment renews yearly the beginning of July and they haven’t been able to do as much this past year with covid they recommended we wait to join till July and save that money. It’s not expensive though so we are very excited to join. I was an elem. major but had to quit due to finances going into my senior year. I’ve gotten really nerded out and excited over this. Lol. We’ve had a rough start because I had to use January to research and educate myself on how to do anything. I wanted to start Feb. 1st. Then my 2nd child got covid and still wanted moma to take care of her even though she’s 20. Lol. And of course I did! Then my hubby fell ill with it. A few days later my 12yr old daughter. And then myself. We drug out our quarantine to almost the entire month of Feb! So we started yesterday. We are just going start at the beginning of 7th grade and if she’s mastered something go to the next chapter till I find where we need to be. And I’m seeing where we may need to go back a grade level on some things. I’m so sorry my post is so long! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your videos! And you’ve helped me so much! Any advice or recommendations you have I would really appreciate it!!! If you have time of course! You have a precious family! And a blessed busy life with a very large following! If you don’t have time maybe someone else here might take the time to read this and share their advice. Thank you for allowing us a peep into your life and what works for y’all and what doesn’t.

Have you dealt with kids with special needs? My daughter has epilepsy and my oldest has dyslexia though is getting better. For now they are public schooled but in a year or so we are going to have to homeschool Bridget because her epilepsy is making her vulnerable and she doesn't understand what the kids may be doing or saying and she could taken advantage of very easily and I am so afraid of that for her. She is in 3rd grade so pretty innocent kids but when they get older I just don't trust her around them at all. We shall see how it goes but I am pretty confident we will homeschool her next year or the next. Thanks again for what you are doing and just so you know I was homeschooled my whole life till college so I am aware of abecka and I enjoyed it and then we did Konos and that had all the subjects in one book at least most of them. So in homeschool, is there a set pace you have to work at, or is there a program where you can work through your school year at your own pace? For example, would it be possible to complete two grades on one year, etc.
@threearrows2248
@threearrows2248 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not Mandy but I'll chime in... The beautiful thing about homeschooling is that you can move at exactly the pace your kids (and you) feel comfortable. And you can explore so much that isn't offered in normal public school education. While it might be possible to get two years of what would be equivalent to a public school curriculum done in 1 calendar year, I wouldn't recommend it. But you will probably find that your kids might be ahead in some ways. For example, when my daughter was in her kindergarten year, she was flying through leve K math, so we moved on to a 1st and 2nd grade level math book and she's now in 1st but doing a more advanced 2nd grade level math. So we didn't cram all of K and 1st into one year, but we moved forward until she was comfortable but challenged. You'll also realize that there's not a need to move so far ahead when there are so many other ways to fill your time - great literature, time at museums, living history books, time in nature, and working on life skills like cooking, taking care of a house, etc. Education should be enjoyed. Best of luck to you!
