Big thanks to Mary Jane for sending me her GEMS ministry cookbook! As I was flipping through it I knew I should share of few of the recipes with y'all. I hope you enjoy! Church cookbooks have the BEST recipes!

GREEN BEAN CHILI - Submitted by Mary Jane
1 lb ground beef
2 (38 oz) cans green beans, drained
2 (15 oz) cans diced tomatoes
1 pkg chili mix
Optional Garnishes:
sour cream
shredded cheese
crackers
Brown and drain ground beef. Add all ingredients to slow cooker. Cook on high for 2-4 hours.
COZY COFFEE - Submitted by Jennifer (I only did half of this recipe)
2 cups powdered creamer
1.5 cups hot cocoa mix
1.5 cups instant coffee
1.5 cups sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. To serve: Add 4 heaping tablespoons per 1 cup of boiling water.
MEXICAN BEAN DIP - Submitted by Regina
8 oz cream cheese, softened
14 oz can chili with beans
8-12 oz jar salsa
8 oz shredded Mexican blend cheese
Sliced black olives (optional)
Grease 8x8 baking dish. Press cream cheese into the dish as bottom layer. Then layer remaining ingredients in order listed above. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes until bubbly to the center. Serve with tortilla chips.
GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE - Submitted by Shannon
1 stick butter
1 carton sliced mushrooms, finely chopped
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1.5 cups milk
1 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
salt and pepper to taste
2 cans French style green beans, drained
1 bag French fried onions
Preheat oven to 350. Melt butter in large skillet over med-high heat. Add mushrooms and sauté for 5 minutes. Add flour and cook for 1 minute. Add milk, sour cream, and cheese. Stir together; let it come to a bubble. Add salt and pepper. Add drained green beans and mix. Transfer to 9x13 and spread onions on top. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

I actually collect church cookbooks. We have lived all over during my husband’s time in the Air Force, so I spent a lot of time at garage sales looking for these cookbooks. My favorite one is from a church in North Dakota. It was a gift from a mother to her son. She made little notes throughout the cookbook noting her favorite recipes, memories of the church where they were married, the church where her son was baptized, and other special moments in their lives. You could tell she spent years noting all of these memories and wanted her son to have those memories to pass down to his children. Not sure why it was being sold at a garage sale….it made me kind of sad it wasn’t kept in the family, but it has a special place in my collection and I treasure it.❤

Mandy, I have a suggestion for you that will really save you literally a lot of tears!!! This is something I learned in my home economics. class too many years ago to count. When you want to cut up a fresh whole onion, put it under cold running water. Cut the root end first and then the other. Next prepare the onion as you usually would. For any leftover onion, put in the fridge in a baggie and when your ready to use, just cut up as usual. I guarantee you won't ever shed another tear. This trick has served me well!!! Ohhhh Mandy, you hit my nemesis. I can not pass by a Church Cook book. I move about a year ago an my 46 year old son threaten to put me in rehab when he saw how many BOXES of cookbooks I have. I'm sure he thought I wouldn't miss a box if one fell off the truck during the move but "he'd be wrong!" I hope Mary Jane reads the comments and would let us know how we could acquire one of the beloved Cook Books from the GEMS!! ? I will be trying these for sure!! Thank You!

Church cookbooks and me go way back. I worked at FBC in my 20s and I compiled, typed, and printed a cookbook for them. Later I did the same for my church as a fundraiser. Some of the best recipes EVER! And of course, recipes from my mother are in that book. My copy is worn and torn and sacred in my home.

Mandy, I’ll have to see if I can send you a Pennsylvania Grange cookbook. The grange used to be like a club or community of farm wives. You had to be a farmers wife to be in the community. And because it was PA, some of them were Amish. Girl, it is my favorite cookbook! You know how good cooks farm Grandmas are! 🤤💗

For the onion/tears issue, put a wet paper towel folded into 4ths on the cutting board while you cut em! It works! I tried it myself last night. I tried cutting without it first, and ooooweeee... That thing was SCREAMIN at me! Then I put the wet paper towel down, and it worked like a DREAM! NO MORE burning and watery eyes, or anything!❤❤❤❤

Since my husband is a retired pastor, we were related to a number of different churches during our “working days”. I think every single one of the churches we were associated with had a cookbook and they are the ones I always go to when I am looking for something to make. I would say that each of them has at least one recipe that turned out to become favorites in our house. I think they are the best cookbooks because they are tried and true recipes from people you know who are great cooks! All four recipes look like ones to try for sure. I learned to cook with a church cookbook. I knew NOTHING about cooking when I got married in 1977, so between that church cookbook and my mom on the other end of a phone line, I turned into a darn good cook.

Mandy and Steven, I woke to the sad and tragic news of losing Toby Keith today. I have been moping around all day but always look forward to your videos. I was making marinara sauce in the kitchen when my tablet chirped to let me know that y'all had posted again. First I must say that I have made that green bean casserole and it is amazing! So worth the extra steps! But mostly I want to thank both of you for being so real and bringing laughter to my soul today! I think after a year of watching and being as old as I am I am going to finally break down and send you a couple of different favorite recipes of mine. Cooking is my passion. I would love to see more of this kind of cooking! Church cookbooks are the best! I have a church cookbook I inherited from my grandmother from the 1940s. My grandmother went to cooking school in the early 1920s and was the best cook I have known. I was lucky enough to have learned to cook mostly by the side of her. Some of the best recipes are found in the old ones. Yummy yummy.

I've always advised young people learning to cook to get a good church cookbook and have at. They usually have down to earth recipes with simple, easy to find ingredients and easy instructions.

Yes to church cook books! My mom would buy 3 books 1 for my sister, 1 for me and 1 for herself . She would try the recipes and make notes in all the books. She has past away now, my sister and I go over the over the recipes notes. Thank you for sharing .

I have several Church Cookbooks and I also have a Church Cookbook from my husband’s Grandmother’s Church and one that my husband’s Grandmother made using her recipes she made while raising her children. She had 3 boys & 3 girls! She also had a kitchen where she fed the men that was working between Artesia & Roswell, New Mexico. Years later she opened a ‘Pie Shop’ and she & her husband and their kids and grandchildren (later on) drove to parts of West Texas to deliver her hand-held homemade pies. That went over HUGE!! So she decided to expand and she added cold sandwiches, then later she added microwave ovens into each store and she made Burritos! Her business served over at least 8 area towns. If you’re old enough to remember ‘Tumbleweed Smith’ on the Radio, you should see if you can find where Tumbleweed interviewed Agnes Collins with “Grandma Collins Fried Pies!” All of your recipes are delicious & my husband (Eddie) and I love them all…except he doesn’t like coffee. But I love this Cozy Coffee Recipe!! Thanks Mandy! You and Stephen are so cute together!! Love you guys bunches!! NORMA COLLINS FROM TEXAS

I'm missing the "hyperbowl", but watching you and Steven makes me "super" happy. MUSHROOMS are my favorite and I think I could live on them never getting bored. Please, Mandy, every time you cook fresh or canned mushrooms add some fresh grated NUTMEG. I always grate nutmeg on the butter sautéed mushrooms. Several of my recipes were featured in old church and fundraising cookbooks. I have a cookbook collection dating back to the early 1900's. If you want to skin and cook cute little critters, it shows you how to do it. I catch and clean fish period. I helped with a squirrel one time and got poison oak, so never again. It tasted awful anyway. I love you in Christ. Warm hugs from northern California.

I have over 200 church cookbooks from all across the USA. Some are over 60 years old. I love to read the history hidden in the books and trying recipes often. When someone marries in the family I give a couple of my books marked with recipes we have enjoyed. I liked all 4 recipes today.

I have a "kindergarten cookbook" - must be 70 years old. Our little Indiana town didn't have a kindergarten with the school, so had to raise $$ for it. Just about everyone in town contributed to it, which in those day could very well have been a church cookbook. My fav. recipe in that is for butterscotch pudding - oh . . . my . . . word . . . it is SO good!

Hey Mandy, I've been watching you for a few years now and it's been so much fun to try your recipes and watch your videos. We are all Gracie Lou fans in our house! I was watching a video the other day and she was meowing at you. My husband from the other room says, "Somebody better come get that cat some cheese!" 😂 My daughter then goes, "Ma'am!" Totally made my day!

Quite a few years ago, I made a church cookbook. It was a huge undertaking… collecting and organizing all the recipes. I can’t wait to try these 3 .

Loved your church cookbook recipes. I have a few church cookbooks. In fact I received one as wedding present 48 years ago, an have made quite a few of the recipes. The Farming Pasters Wife also makes the Cozy Coffe but when she mixes her 4 Tbs. Mix and stirs it up then she adds her favorite coffee creamer so good! I make the mix for our church all the time.

Mandy, when my sons were in grade school, they made cookbooks for a fundraiser. All of the students got favorite family recipes & they were compiled in to a cookbook. Years later when my youngest was in middle school & the oldest in high school, my youngest sister & I were talking about recipes & she told me she had made the macaroni & cheese recipe that was in the school cookbook & it was really good & had become a family favorite. I had to make & see if it was as good as she said. Well my family & I love it & it has become our go-to if we take a meal to a family where someone is sick, had a surgery, a new baby etc. All of the people we’ve given it to ask for the recipe. You just never know where going to find a dish that you love & want to share. I do have a Church Cookbook too, purchased from a friend & it’s full of great recipes.

My sister makes a similar chili cheese dip. Same thing except no salsa and Hormel chili without beans. She heats it up in the microwave for five minutes. My boys loved it and called it "Aunt Diana's dip". She would make it in a pie plate. My two boys could eat the whole plate by themselves, so we have to make several if anyone else wants some. 😀

Mushrooms, garlic and onions are a must for me. When I make my green bean casserole I always add sliced mushrooms and some sugar, it browns up so nicely and onions I add them to my plate, that way crisp every time I eat it.

Hi Mandy, found your channel not long ago and really appreciate all the recipes and tools you use. I've purchased chopper and cheese shredder you use and it has been a game changer for me. I am a transplant from Long Island NY and live in NC, just south of Raleigh. My husbands name is Stephen. We also love onions and I have a tip for you with them. Wet a paper towel and squeeze out most of the water but not all. Place it on your cutting board. It will significantly reduce the tears brought on by our weakness for onions. My understanding is the onion "vapors " will be drawn to the wet towel instead of your eyes. Unless the onions are extremely pungent, this has worked for me 95% of the time. I'll call it a win! Thanks for all you do!

Hey Mandy & Steven, Cole & Miss Gracie, I love church cookbooks & regional books too. I'll have to find my cookbook from the UP of Michigan called "Hollyhocks & Radishes" which won a Newberry Prize & has the most amazing rural Michigan recipes. There's not one recipe that isnt awesome. I never have done it, but they even have a recipe for Sweet Dandelion Wine, I just have way too many dogs in my neighborhood adding extra ingredients to even try it! 🤭🤣 One of my favorites is Sweet Tomato Pie though. I'll find a copy, but it might take time bc most people hang onto their copies, & pass them down to younger generations. Can't wait to try the Green Bean Casseroles - YUM! 🙋‍♀️🌻🦋🏠💕💕💕💕🐾🐾

I have a copy of the local Russian Orthodox cookbook, which is where my family goes to church. I have only made bread and dessert from it, but they were fantastic. I would love to try all of these recipes you shared today. Especially the green bean casserole.

OH MY, that green bean casserole dish looks ssssooooo good. That is definitely going on my dinner menu for next week. I've not had a church cookbook, but I worked at Walmart years ago and we put out a cookbook with recipes from all of the employees that wanted to share special recipes. A lot of good cooking came that cookbook.

I have 4 or 5 church cookbooks that I have referred to many times over our 45 years of marriage…😊. One of them is from my Mama’s church (she was church secretary there for 30 years and grew up in that church). Needless to say, it holds a special place in my heart. Several of her recipes are featured in it. I also have a recipe book from the national piano technicians guild, of which my husband is a member and I used to be a member as I used to also tune pianos! Anyway, a request went out to all members and their spouses to send in any special recipes to help publish the book. So I submitted several, which are in the book. I definitely want to try that green bean casserole recipe! It’s gluten free since no canned “cream of” soups are used. Thanks so much for featuring it! I heard of cozy coffee from another KZfaq channel (the Farming Pastor’s Wife) and it’s her favorite coffee treat. She also squirts canned whipped cream on top for extra decadence, but also adds her favorite liquid coffee creamer before doing that. Definitely not low calorie!😱 -Brenda
