In this video I’m going to show you how easy it is to set up your Lastolite Hilite and go over some of its features and uses. Let’s start off by just putting it out there. I freakin’ love this thing! I saw one like 5 years ago for the first time and then had a bit of sticker shock and then totally forgot about it. A few years ago I was looking into backlight options and how to get a pure white background and came across it again. Honestly, I still had a bit of sticker shock, so I put it off again. Oh, to get those years of editing white backgrounds back! After I used it one I knew I should have just bit the bullet and bought it years ago.
The Lastolite Hilite is a collapsible softbox background, designed to create “high key” lighting. In other words, a solid pure white background with no shadow.
I’m a professional newborn and baby photographer located in Monterey, California. Are you interested in learning more about newborn photography? Or want to see the inside of my photography studio? Are you looking for a place to just get started with your own photography and would love some easy tips and tricks? Well, you’ve come to the right place. On my KZfaq channel I’ll go over the complicated and break it down into quick and easy to understand tutorials. Photography, even when you’re using studio lights, doesn’t need to be complicated. So please watch, enjoy, and I’d love it if you choose to subscribe!

Very helpful thanks! I love how you show this working in a really small space and get beautiful shots. I, too, had sticker shock, but now I will be buying one today. If anybody happens to see this comment this week (November 30, 2020) Manfrotto has the 6'x7' on sale for $293.99 (40% off) for their "Creator's Week" sale!

I really could have used this on my recent location shoots as I had minimal space and ZERO window light to work with. Could you please tell me what the diameter is when its folded up into the carrying case? I'm trying to figure out if it will fit in my suitcase the next time I have to fly up here to Japan. Mahalo for the great video!

It’s at the studio and I won’t get there for a few days so I don’t have the exact dimensions, but if I had to guess it’s 3-4ft. Unfortunately I’d say it’s too big for a suitcase.

Art Altman the Hilite does all the work to make it even, I just love this thing. As far as folding it, make sure a couple sides are unzipped so the air can go out and it lays flat. Then grab each long side and start to fold it like a taco. It’ll collapse on itself and fold up.

So glad you liked it! You could go with an Alien Bee. I even think of you went with an alien bee 800 you could get away with just lighting it with 1 strobe. And if you are really on a budget the Neewer stobes on Amazon actually have some really good reviews (but I haven’t used them).

I’m curious if flooding in green light, or adding a green color gel to the light in the Hilite would work for green screen… or is the white panel pretty opaque?
@brendenboggs8515
@brendenboggs8515 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not super familiar with using a green screen but I don’t think that would work. However they do have a green screen backdrop that you can buy and attach to it.
@Cowcake74

Looks really cool. ☺️ Do you still use it? Useful that you can use the black side as a backdrop also. I wish the sides with the zippers were black so you could feather it easier when using it as a softbox though, imagining that it’s hard when it spills light from the sides.
@brendenboggs8515
@brendenboggs8515 2 жыл бұрын
I still use it all the time! I haven’t had issues with soil when using it as a soft box, probably because it’s so big, but I could see that being an issue of you are using a darker background. I wish the front border was white when using it for full body photos.
@Cowcake74
@Cowcake74 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, it could result in extra editing with the black rim. So If the sides were black, and the border was white I would say it was perfect! I’m considering buying it, but I need to think about it a bit. Quite an investment 🙀

@brendenboggs8515

I don’t shoot video, but I think it would probably work if you used 2 continuous lights on each side so it’s even and powerful enough.

Hi.Very interesting, thanks!I known this backdrop, but the thing i'm wondering is what is the "minimum" power that it needs to be well lit.Will some flashs lights enough?(1 on each side), have you tried?Or are studio flashs the only way?Thanks from France.
@brendenboggs8515
@brendenboggs8515 4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what kind of flashes you use. I use an Einstein Flash ( just one) and I don't even use it at half power and it lights evenly. I think 2 speed lights (one on each side would be enough). I also think constant light would work if you had one on both side depending on your lighting conditions on your subject.

Hi- Thanks for the video. I have this Lastolite Hilite and, for some reason, my photos have a gray color instead of the bright white. I can't figure it out for the life of me, especially since the strobes in the backdrop are firing along with the strobe on top of my camera!! I have a feeling it may be some sort of sync issue (because what else could it be?) but I don't really know enough photography I guess to know what to do... I'm just using my strobes in slave mode right now, maybe that's why? Please help if you can. Thanks!
@brendenboggs8515
@brendenboggs8515 2 жыл бұрын
Hi it’s hard to say without seeing what’s going on, it sounds like the lights aren’t going off inside the highlite, or the strobes are firing high enough with your exposure. The easiest way to figure out what’s going on is to take a test photo with just the highlite flashes and then another test with just the flash on the front of your camera (with the same settings. That way you can see where the light is coming from.
@jeffreycaron922
@jeffreycaron922 2 жыл бұрын
@@brendenboggs8515 Thanks. I can actually see both strobes firing inside the Hilite. This is why it's so maddening that the background is still gray as if they're not firing. Because I'm using slave mode, do you think it may be a sync issue, like they're going off slightly before or after the camera and it's wired strobe? Is that ever an issue with slave mode? If so, I'm wondering if using wireless triggers like the Pocket Wizards would be an improvement on any possible slave sync issue...
@brendenboggs8515
@brendenboggs8515 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreycaron922 right, I know you see the strobes firing, but if you do a test you can compare it to what you’re typically getting. So if you purposely take a shot only using your front flash and it looks exactly like when everything is supposed to flash it might be a sync issue. Only issue I’ve had is from the strobe head being in a corner and the signal not getting to it so it wasn’t going off at all.

There are a couple different options. You can prop it up with 2 Apple boxes. You can probably run a backdrop cross bar through it and hang it. @@djtoman6875 You can still use it, but you need to up the power on your strobe. And when you edit, you cool it down and go towards magenta. (The photos look really yellow and green SOOC). Also, you cannot use another light source together because the colors wont match.
