When I first saw this piece in the box I couldn't help but laugh! Then, after examining it a bit, it was clear to me that it could be turned. I love all the nature this piece has, I only wish my finish did it justice. Finished in shellac.

Fearless Phil tames the wild root ball. Now THIS is the kind of turning you excel at. Congratulations. I love the shape and the sheen. Personally, I prefer a shiny finish on wood that leaves it looking wet. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Please do more like this. Gaps, inclusions, interesting shapes, I love em all. God bless you and keep you.

Upon seeing this beautiful piece of "fogwood" I thought it would be beautiful as is. Just clean any debris, even out the bottom (hopefully being able to save Tuffy's writing) then spraying. It would have been a true work of Nature's Art. You did a fabulous job going the extra mile (and nail biting). You are correct it is Nature's Art. I love the piece as I do all of your work. If you want to redo any kind of finish saturating it with the correct solvent from a spray bottle and scrubbing it with a soft bristle brush will remove the offending finish. Then just apply your preferred finish. Good luck.

It’s a great piece of work. As for the finish - I had a similar dilemma and decided that if some of my piece was shiny then I was going to go very shiny all over and painted it with yacht deck varnish. The client (my wife) thought that it was lovely because the varnish softened all the edges. I always love your videos and you teach me so much. Thanks a million for the hard work. Slainge

We're always our worst critiques, Phil! You could try dulling it back with some denatured alcohol. Like lacquer, shellac is self-healing with the application of a little of the solvent used... like alcohol for shellac and lacquer thinner for lacquer. That said, I think you did an amazing job with the piece. Yes, it is art... but it is also functional. It could easily hold a few nuts or M&M's so it's a win win, my friend!

Why can't a bowl - or any other turning - be shiny? I think this piece has a special personality all its own. Well turned and you do have a piece of art. Nobody who sees it will say "Oh, no, what a disaster". I'll bet a majority of your consistent viewers will like this. As always, "I'll take it".

That is very shiny. Just remember that isn't bad to some people. I'm sure many will love it better due to the shiny affect. The shiny is really only odd because it's not your norm. It looks great!

I love the piece….I’m a satin finish girl, so I’d love to see it with a not-so-shiny finish…but it’s a great piece…I love your vision…and I DO like how it looks holding that wooden bowl…👍🏻

That was pure magic from Start to Finish, Phil. To me it looked fantastic with that bowl of Crystals in. Hope you find your wife's Crystal Balls to try in it. You definitely shouldn't be disappointed with the result.

Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, I hope you are keeping safe and well, That is amazing peace ☮️ of Art 🖼️, there is nothing like living on the edge, very precarious turning , You could even say a root of all evil, As it was fitting you all the way, But you got there in the end, not sure if you have some steal wool 0000 and some past wax for burnishing , it will knock back the glossy surface and hopefully will give it Sheen , A great territorial on how to turn a so-so bit of root, thanks Tuffy , That put Phil on the edge 😂, It looks great 👍. Stay safe 😂, I look forward to seeing your next peace of Art, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.

That is very cool, at first I was thinking cut it in half....then I could mess up two pieces. At least no rocks came flying out. Definitely a sit on the edge of my seat turning. Be well my friend.

Phil, you really took on a challenge. I agree with other, Tuffy is laughing if he watched this turning. I can't image how many hours of sanding it must have taken to final this piece. Love the three point base and all of the other features. I agree with you the finish is too shiny for manzanita.

In previous comments, I mentioned I have turned metal for production custom turnings. I have taught machining principles to hundreds of people over 40 years. One of the main principles I always stressed was holding power. Chucking or fixturing for odd shapes became paramount in the quality of the finished piece. I was worried about the double sided tape. Gluing was the best bet. But even then, I was holding my breath. You did a great job getting through the piece. Considering there were interrupted cuts, you really had nice control. I think I enjoyed watching this as much as looking at the finished part. No one’s er called me an artist but you are one for sure. Love your work.
