Robbie and Brad discuss overstable mids for a more advanced player this week.
They discuss staying when to stay in the same mold family and when to venture out to other plastics.

On the survey or questionnaire there should be a what is your preferred angle to throw on. I think that can help with disc recommendations. For example I wouldn’t recommend much understable because he said he likes flat shots to slight Anhyzer shots.

30:04 TLDR: Dye is a chemical. Chemicals change how the plastic cools and its resulting physical characteristics which can affect stability. Disclaimer: not a physicist, not a polymer chemist, not all that great of a disc golfer. Just a biologist/ environmental chemist who is a giant nerd about hobbies. Research is my thing. So, as I understand it, the color of a disc doesn’t always mean it will have certain stability. More like, the dye is an additional chemical in the polymer mix that can affect how the plastic cools in the mold and THAT affects the stability. It’s why different plastics of the same mold have different stabilities. It’s pretty accepted that environmental changes during molding can affect the cooling as well. Temperature, humidity, plastic type, amount of plastic injected into the mold (turns into disc weight), and the dye can all increase/ decrease the amount of shrinkage the disc experiences during cooling. And all of these variables are acting on the plastic so it’s really difficult to predict how the disc is going to come out. I have a theory that this why a Destroyer can be anything. Innova has made like 12 million Destroyers (rough estimate lol) so there have been a ton of variables across making all those discs probably resulting in a lot of flight variation over the years. More shrinkage during cooling raises the parting line height (PLH) which increases stability. It can also affect dome, shoulder, etc. You can line up different colors/ weights/ runs if the same disc and observe the different PLH and make an educated guess as to the relative stabilities. It’s described here a bit in this blog post from Mint: mintdiscs.com/blogs/news/understanding-your-disc-volume-1-parting-line-height?_pos=1&_sid=404e72ae5&_ss=r I liken it to baking. There is a small but noticeable difference in the texture of my cookies when I use real butter vs margarine (per my grandma’s recipe). The chemical composition of the butter changes something about the process and those cookies are just different than when I use margarine. Polymer dyes are the “butter” in this situation. I would expect that the new green Discmania FD’s had a different polymer dye and/ or were molded in a relatively short amount of time so conditions were similar enough among the green ones that they all cooled relatively the same way resulting in a more overstable flight. But that’s just an educated guess. I think it’s one of the reasons I throw so much Mint, in addition to just really loving MVP plastic lol. They really lean in to the differences between runs (early alpha runs had pretty big stability differences between colors, more recent stuff is more related to the weights) and try to explain the WHY not every disc is the same. It really appeals to my scientist brain (this reply is the perfect example lol). I believe that Infinite also marks disc runs if not tracks how the different runs fly. Complete side note: you can test this yourself on a very simple level. Try to freeze pure (deionized) water and saltwater. The addition of the salt lowers the freezing point of water. It’s why we add salt to roads in the winter. YAY CHEMISTRY!

My understanding is that color can affect a discs stability or dome within the same run. Different colors have slightly different mixes and cool at different rates. The easiest example of this are the pink vs blue iron samurai 3s, all of the pinks are flat and all of the blues are a little domey. This doesn’t mean that all blue MD3s are domey or that all pinks are flat. So this can mean certain colors in certain runs of discs fly slightly different, but it’s more of an exception to the rule than the rule. In general color is not a good indicator

My disc golf journey also started in Florence Al, March 2020, right on the Tennessee River at a recently flooded golf course that was converted into a disc golf course. Long and extra water hazards but had a great time with the whole family and have been addicted ever since. So many great memories from that camping trip, I'd love to go back.

I was throwing predictable shots with pfn beasts. I lost a couple, and bought every old beast I could find. Now that I’ve been throwing mint and lone star, the beast is going by the wayside.

Listening to this episode, and I felt this exact problem with not wanting to extend the zone throws. I actually used the mango for a bit, but ultimately fell on the nebula and Malta. Still trying to decide between them. Feel like your guest and I are kindled spirits. Thanks for this podcast it's my favorite disc golf content, and look forward to it each week

Brad sometimes when runs are made when they switch colors weather will be different and the warehouse wont cure the discs the same so thy become slightly different in flights. Really only true id say for large runs

Robbies form wasn't to impressive in the Foundation skills challenge. I thought he could atleast get one over the fence on the ball diamond. Brody didn't look much better.
