You're so right, the innocence, the CLEAN lyrics and real heart felt singing and traditional clothing and hair style is gone. There's virtually nothing out there but filth and obscenity.

I’m pretty sure if you look in the right places you’ll find something good that is modern. Also those times weren’t as innocent as you might expect. Many of those actors were addicted to drugs, alcoholics and unfaithful to their spouses. I think you’re idealizing the past and demonizing the present a little too much.

This movie was criticized even back in the day for sanitizing Hart’s real life sexuality. The irony was that while they were ignoring that aspect of the composers life, the actor that they picked for the straight Rogers, Tom Drake, later came out as gay

A very interesting comment. Didn't know about Hart or Drake.

What difference does it make? They were human beings and had to live the way they wanted. Just like people today.

Yeah, and he's writing it and making it up as he's singing. I guess that's how song writing is done. It's so terribly easy.

I really prefer the rendition of the Manhattan song from the 1929 film short ‘Makers of Melody’ especially being as they cut out whole sections of the song in this 1948 Mickey Rooney version and this one for me just doesn’t have the poignancy that the 1929 Makers of Melody film did.
