In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 5 Topic 2 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 5 (1844-1877).
This period begins with the ongoing desire for Americans to push westward and settle lands on the frontier. John O'Sullivan coined a term for this most basic of American desires: Manifest Destiny. Basically it just meant that it was the God-given right and responsibility of Americans to possess and inhabit a nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.
Westward migration was certainly spurred on by events like the California Gold Rush, and also by congressional legislation like the Preemption Acts. Other migrants travelled west to seek religious refuge, chief among them, the Mormons.
This insistence to possess lands in the west led to the Texas Revolution and the desire to add California and Oregon to the Union. Thanks to the presidency of James K. Polk, those desires would become a reality.
If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.
This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 5 Topic 2, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

Essentially everything he said in note form (sorry format is kind of messed up but anyways here it is): Topic 2: -July of 1845 gave American impulse for westward expansion a name: Manifest Destiny -What is it: To possess the whole continent from sea to shining sea/coast to coast -Who gave it: Providence/God -Idea is that Americans have a God-given right to take over land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean (and later, more) -Needed for: -More access to minerals and natural resources -Discovery of gold in California: Gold Rush -More migration west -More economic + homestead opportunities -Preemption Acts of 1830s + 1840s -Religious refuge -Mormons -James K. Polk was a big believer in Manifest Destiny -Wanted Texas + Oregon -Texas had 3x more Americans than Mexicans by 1830 -Most of these Americans were Southern, Protestant, and slaveowners or sympathizers to slavery -In 1829 Mexican government made two requirements for immigrants living in Mexico -Must convert to Roman Catholicism + slavery outlawed -Americans initially ignored the laws -Mexico shut down border to further immigration in response -American immigrants kept coming -In 1834, Mexico had a change in government w/ dictator Santa Anna now the leader -Decided to enforce the laws -Rebelled under Sam Houston + claimed to be an independent republic in 1836 -Mexican gov't sent forces and had battles at Alamo (loss for Texans b/c all defenders were killed) and San Jacinto (victory for Texans b/c they captured Santa Anna) -Texas gained independence but Mexico did not recognize independence -Jackson, Van Buren, and John Tyler all wanted to annex (add) Texas to the U.S. but did not end up doing so (whether b/c of their decisions or b/c of the Senate) due to fears of going to war w/ Mexico -Texas stayed independent for a while -Oregon had both British and American settlers -Competing claims -British claimed land because they had established a profitable fur trade there and had been settled for much longer -America had been settling missionaries and farmers in far greater numbers than the British -James K. Polk wanted to add Texas + Oregon + California to the U.S. and had ran his election platform on the annexation of these territories -Since he won the presidency, he believed that it was the American people's will to add these territories to the U.S. and that it was his job to fulfill their desire -Predecessor John Tyler (in last months of presidency) annexed Texas -Mexican government not happy about the annexation and went to war with the U.S. -Polk worked out a treaty w/ Britain for Oregon (w/ Senate approval) and divided it at the 49th parallel

I think we often confuse manifest destiny as an idea that Americans wanted to take land from the indigenous people as opposed to wanting spread their claims to the continent over and above other competing European powers. Consider that in the wake of warring European nations the indigenous tribes people were not seen as a sovereign or organized nations, they were not real competitors for the territory. While it is tragic that Americans did not respect them more and treat them better… their lands were going to be inhabited by more powerful nations. One could well imagine that had Europeans never set foot in the America’s that the Americas would have then been conquered by great native empires or later by asian expansion and imperialism. All of history is the story of advancing technology and the spread of those who use it.

And how abstract ideas such as religion and art play a role in the development, interactions, and conflicts between different groups of people over time.
@elizabethkurth2069
@elizabethkurth2069 2 ай бұрын
@@aidanforman5950i feel like honestly those abstract ideas are a result of conflicts between people, like conflicts between different economic interests. religion, art, culture, it’s not the cause of these conflicts, but conflicting economic interests cause those things to be the way that they are. like the religion or culture we have is a way to maintain these conflicts and ensure that one dominant group of people stay in power- like a lot of the religious, artistic, and cultural movements in us history (and all history) to me seem to be a result of that
@aidanforman5950
@aidanforman5950 2 ай бұрын
@elizabethkurth2069 No no. Religion is definitely the cause of many conflicts. Just look at the split in the Mulsim Caliphate, the Spanish Inquisition, the battles between different Christain groups all because their interpretations of the Bible were slightly different. I will say that monotheistic religions definitely cause way more conflicts than polytheism religions, but still.
@elizabethkurth2069
@elizabethkurth2069 2 ай бұрын
@@aidanforman5950 if you examine these conflicts further, you may often find economic reasons behind them. I don’t know much about the Muslim Caliphate, but the Spanish Inquisition cannot be reduced to “being caused by religion.” A large part of the issue was the desire of the monarchy to expand influence economically and benefit their class interests, it was not entirely a religious issue- nothing really is entirely caused by religion, religion is often a cover or a justification for exploitation or conquest. You could also think about why such a religion, such a rigid, structured, hierarchal religion in which huge amounts of profits are garnered really exists- is that a natural human phenomenon, or is there a reason that people would create this type of religion beyond just spirituality? Namely, profit and economic interests. Look at televangelists, look at the Catholic Church, look at the way the British used Christianity as an excuse to create colonies or expand their rule- organized religion is often a result of economic organization, economic relations, and the interest of those in power to maintain their power through appealing to morality. Another thing is that organized religions as they exist today are often kept relevant because of the lack of adequate social services and access to basic necessities- the churches/ religious organizations provide this through charity because of the poor economic organization and poor economic status of many individuals, allowing the religion to maintain its power.
