A war-like situation erupted in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on April 23 causing heavy firing between armed militants and village volunteers. As per reports, the incident took place in Phaileng-Luwangsanggol, situated on the fringe areas between Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts. Videos of the incident, a barrage of gunshots and mortar shells being fired on the village areas of the Kuki-Zo community. The gunfight continued till late on Tuesday evening.
Although there is no official confirmation, sources indicate that at least two armed militants were killed during the crossfire, with no reported casualties among the Kuki-Zo volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills vehemently condemned the unabated aggression on Kuki-Zo villages.
"The fresh attack on Kuki-Zo at Phaileng-Luwangsanggol villages is a blatant ploy by the Arambai Tenggol and the Meitei Militants to salvage their tarnished image following their interference in the recently concluded first phase Lok Sabha Polls. Enough is enough. How many more sacrifices must we make to maintain peace in the region ?" Kipgen questioned.
The district also witnessed an IED explosion later in the evening at the Thonggaibi bridge located at the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway 2. The blast took place at around 12:45 am leaving three craters in the middle of the bridge and disrupting vehicular movements.
The incidents occurred just two days ahead of the second phase of the 18th Lok Sabha election in the remaining 13 segments of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.
