I lived there a couple of years back in the mid-70's. I always liked it. Visited this year as well.

Looking to move to a Michigan coastal town within the year, from Florida. This video was really helpful, thank you!

Definitely chose the Lake Michigan side. The further north you go, the more prettier it gets.

@@TheWoodsOnline is it better than Lake Huron? Also, is Manistee worth going to for a week’s vacation? Is there anything to do?

We have not been to Huron with exception of going to Mackinac Island. But, I have been told that due to the weather and how it comes across the state, that the west coast is prettier than the east coast. If you like the outdoors (hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing), the beach (2 of them), shops and restaurants (several new ones this year! They also opened up a chocolatier recently downtown. Not to forget the new 5 story Hampton Inn at the beach. So much is going on in town this year it’s exciting. Oh and ship watching. Yeah, sounds boring, but it’s actually cool to stand on the riverwalk and be within 30-40 feet from the large ships as they pass through. It’s a tight navigation they call threading the needle. Manistee also makes a good base camp. Within an hour or so, you have traverse city, sleeping bear dunes National lakeshore, Glen Arbor and fishtown (Leland). Feel free to ask any other questions.

Thanks for showin us around … that was terrific. I realllly appreciate how you pointed things out ( like the theatre where James Earle Jones started. How cool!) & shared the history. I’m a Great Lakes Girl ! From Buffalo, NY on Lake Erie. I’m a Gramma now & my Fam may move to Michigan. So I’m looking for a pedestrian friendly place to live with both natural beauty & culture. ( I’m a life-long non driver). I crave the beach ! And lovve the water. Only problem is … how do I get out of this town w/o a car ? Any Greyhound bus service ? I’ll have to look that up. Thx again ! Liz

Thank. We love Manistee. Manistee is very walkable although it does have some hills. It has a couple of great beaches that you will love. Lake Michigan, the Manistee river and Manistee Lake are all nearby for you to enjoy. But! Yes there’s a but. It is a small town. The next larger town is a 25-30 minute drive. There are some local “buses” (not greyhound) and a cab company that can get you out of town. You will definitely have to resourceful on all your travel needs.
