Onboard Keystone Anthracite's Manitowoc 6400 dragline digging rock to uncover the coal. 180' boom with 12 CY bucket. Lever on left controls swing, 2 levers on right control drag and hoist of the bucket, and the 2 footpedals are the brakes for drag and hoist. 7/28/14.

Don't be seduced by the sci-fi and Star Trek fantasy. Some kinds of work can only be done by certain machines and processes. To embellish them with gadgets and high tech eye candy only adds layers of unreliability and the actual skill of doing the thing is eventually lost.

The first machine I learned to operate was a dragline, back in 1971. It was nowhere this size but operates on the same principle. Spent 6 months on it before I went to hydralics and spent 9 years on backhoes. Loved that kind of work !!!

Worked on an old one, hand leavers. Changed all the drive components under neeth. Then changed shafts and bushings on the main drum assembly. Took us near 3 weeks. Learned how to swing a sledgehammer. The second year of my HD mechanic course.. Retired now. This dragline is on a barge now on the Detroit River somewhere. Might just try and find it some time this summer..

There are many of these deep hole anthracite videos on youtube, most of them by Bennetshovel, and all of them just as frustrating to watch. At the steep angle of the drag rope, the only digging force is the part of the weight of the bucket that isn't canceled out by the upward pull on the drag rope. This really looks like a perfect application for a clamshell. On a clamshell, even though the closing line is pulling upward, its force is multiplied by several times by the bucket shivs to provide powerful closing force. A clam is more flexible, you can catch it on the bottom to turn it crossways to get at a corner. The bigger walking draglines used in anthracite have the fairlead at the end of a nose, so the machine doesn't need to be this close to the hole. The drag rope needs to be kept out of the dirt, to reduce wear. The split controls result in the operator reaching across to knock off the drag. As someone said, 2 axis joysticks would seem to be easier to operate, or just group the 3 main levers like an old fashioned machine.

Splitting the levers like that seems not very ergonomic, see him reaching across to kick off the drag. Most machines with lever swing have the 3 main working levers close together, kick off drag with your right thumb. Electrics usually have pedal swing, so you can keep left hand on drag and right hand on hoist.

There is an old dragline a couple of miles away sitting on a hilltop somehow resembling a giant dinosaur lost in time, The rusty hulk has been there forty or fifty years because moving it would have been too expensive once the mine gave out. I bet that thing used as much electricity as the nearby town of Warrior when it was mining the seam of coal known by the same name .

Good day ! I have a question about the Manitowoc 6400. What is the function of the right lever, actuation of the hoist winch, forwards? The left lever switches on the interlock. Does this mean that the hoist is looped in and braked via the VICON to protect the band brake ?? But the same effect would be achieved by lifting it slightly? I personally know the Manitowoc 4600! But have technical documents for the 6400. Many greetings from the east of Germany from Michael

Sure would take a lot off the brakes and the torque converters would give you a lot of easing around room. A Model-6 and a 30-B are as big as I got to herd but mostly smaller for cleaning out ponds and such. Still, a crane is a crane and cables are cables.
