We used to sit along the Muskegon channel fishing and watch the freighters go by. That was in the 60's. My da worked the docks for a while after comming back from the Korean war. He loved taking us down to the channel to watch the freighters come in just for fun.

Just a few years ago the 1000 footers were still coming into Muskegon with coal for the power plant. That was quite a site to see. Now the plant is closed and not as much freighter traffic will be moving in and out.

RailwayProductions By size, we refer to them as ships. Most of the time, we just call them ‘lakers’ and ‘salties’ when they’re visiting from the ocean.
@louisyock92855 жыл бұрын
I've only ever heard the old timers say they worked on "the boats." (This is in Manistee, Ludington, and Frankfort.) Linguistically speaking, this ship/boat debate is an odd thing that English speakers have decided to have. An equivalent debate would be whether we're going to classify chicken and poultry as two different things based on size, where it's from, or where it's eaten.

Actually, by lake standards, she isn't that old. She was launched in 1973 as the Paul Thayer, renamed Earl W. Oglebay in 1994, then Manitowoc in 2008 with Lower Lakes buying her from Wilmington trust. As best I can find, she is still powered by 2 V-16 ALCo diesels producing about 5,600 hp...

I was supposed to take the SS badger from Milwaukee to Muskegon like eight years ago and they canceled it due to gale warning. The weather Channel said that in the middle of Lake Michigan there were some waves with tips as high as two stories. That’s some serious white tips!
@jimzeirke11275 жыл бұрын
TheKira699 While there are rub rails on the sides of the ship, Great Lakes ships do way more docking and locking than do ocean going ships. Particularly when entering a lock, they put the side of the bow against the pier and drive the ship in. This assumes that they have enough room on the opposite side. This is really important when the ship is a 1000’ er such as the Paul R. Tregurtha.
