It's pretty obvious Jimmy's at fault- his entire ego trip in charge, his manner of speech talking to the others, his hatred for the company, his not so subtle jabs at Anya, and his utter derision of the captain, all suggest he's hoping they'll let him die, but doesn't want to make it too obvious he axed the captain. I'm guessing he wasn't content with his life, his direction, and the people involved, and decides spur of the moment to take it out on the captain- leading to the ship crashing. The scrambled text, while it could mean many things, may mean "Take Responsibility" something Jimmy is both trying to do and not doing- he's taking responsibility for the ship, and yet not taking any responsibility for his part in the way things have gone. Meanwhile, Curly is self aware, admits his faults, and accepts that life isn't perfect, as seen in the monologue in the teaser and at the end of this demo. Likely, Curly embodies his guilt and grappling with the philosophical reality of his life, a result of curly's continued survival being a one eyed reminder of his crime and the compounding pointlessness of the venture- work 358 days on a cramped ship, alone with just 5 other people, all to deliver something as worthless as sugary mouthwash (which is itself, worthless, as it'd give you really bad breath and tooth decay after awhile). I expect the full game to mediate heavily upon the philosophical side of things, just as "how Fish is made" and it's dlc dealt with choice, free will, and self-determination, while this clearly deals with work, Capitalism, purpose, and satisfaction. I kinda want to find the source of the "ism" cartoon, as its kinda relatable in this day and age. The cake scene alone has Jimmy complain about a cake, a specialty and a treat considering the circumstances, because it's mediocre, and showcases Jimmy's cynicism/pessimism vs Curly's more tempered realism. I am curious about the full game, just as I was before, because I suspect things may not be as they seem. As far as we know, the only survivor of the crash was Jimmy, or worse, and all the events are a mouthwash induced drunken stupor hallucination.

I think the “ism” cartoon is supposed to be “communism” and the salesman is a “snake oil” salesman whose claims go as far as to control the weather. Both cartoons are pro capitalism pushing propaganda like “you want the company to profit” (trickle down) and the “-ism is a scam”. I’m not sure if there is a source for these cartoons, as it always felt to me like this kind of propaganda was blatant to say “communism bad” for better fear mongering rather than “ism” (one such example being all of the Hitler looney toons episodes).

There was never other crewmates. He was alone from the start. Every person depitcs a part of the Jimmy. The part that still has hope and thinks he will live and tries to be optimistic, the part that just wants to give up and is frustrated about the situations, the part that is scared and doesnt know what to do and the part that knows life is tough and complicated.

Nasty. Over here they (used to) drink the methanol fluid used for the windshield wiper sprays in cars. Some of them "filter" it through bread as if that does anything. Then again if one's at _that_ point they might as well get high from smoking rat poison and the remaining lifespan will be much the same.

I slowed down the video at 29:45 to see what those images that flashed by super fast were. There was a shot with text that said “I hope this hurts”, then like 3 shots of Captain Curly in the hospital bed after the accident. Jimmy’s dialogue at the end + those shots lends credence to the theory that Jimmy caused the crash not the Captain 😳

Based on the fact that curly is the captain, one can assume he was in the cockpit during the crash, and the foam inside indicates that he would have been briefly exposed to the vacuum of space for a brief moment. Since the foam is obviously a last resort safety mechanism, it can be inferred that it is severely caustic and harmful to humans, which would explain curly's skin. I think it is highly unlikely that the main character attacked curly, as using the implied axe would not have put curly into his current condition, and would have instead just killed him. My best theory for what happened is that the main character we play as had a psychotic episode which caused them to freak out and start messing with things like valves, power systems, and other controls which would have distracted curly enough for him to go onto a collision course and be unable to fix it, at which point he would sustain serious bodily harm, such as his eye being pulled forward in its socket via vacuum force, neurological damage from the fumes of the foam, his skin being melted via the corrosive properties of the foam, and losing thinner appendages to the corrosion caused by the foam as it would eat through his much smaller segments, explaining why hes missing a foot and his arms look stubby. The idea of the foam being caustic is also supported by curly missing his nose, lips, and eyelids, which would be melted away much more grievously than his skin that is attached to bone tissue. He also may not be necessarily brain damaged, and more paralyzed. Such an impact coupled with brief exposure to the vacuum of space would most likely cause his head to lurch forward at literal breakneck speeds and damage his spine, causing paralysis. This, coupled with the foam being caustic would explain why he is the only one with chemically burnt off skin, as he would be the only crew member unable to escape being covered in foam. In summary, it is highly unlikely that curly was attacked by jimmy, but that doesn't mean he's innocent.

I remember this homeless guy once sat in a park beside me and started chatting me up. Told me some crazy stories from his biker days. At one point he just restarts everything he was saying, like his brain reset or he was stuck in a loop. When I noticed he was just talking in circles I told him I was heading off. Guy gave me some money and asked me to buy him some smokes and mouthwash. Said the store wouldn't sell him mouthwash anymore. I bought him his smokes but not the mouthwash. The guy was just killing himself. I think about him every now and then, although at this point it was over a decade ago and he's likely dead.

Oh.....shit man. I think I had something just like you. I met this guy, he had a prosthetic leg on, really chunky type of polyester or plastic. He was just sitting on this metal railing at a small 4 way, and I ran into him while I was heading to the bus. I talked with him for a bit, and he just went in circles, jumping from story to story: Told me about Issac, his grandson, about how he banged and got over 20 girlfriends pregnant, how he lived in a house just over at a small little cul de sac neighborhood, and how he was wanting to call his grandson, but he didn't have a phone on him. I asked if he could use a phone nearby since there was a building literally only a short 5 minutes walk from there, but he couldn't do it. He asked for my phone (I lied, said it was dead) and then bam. Just like with your guy, his brain reset. Had no idea he even mentioned his grandson to me, and asked if I wanted to go down to the store, said he'd get me something, some milk maybe. He offered me 20 bucks even....but I declined because I missed my bus and I had to go. I wasn't as socially strong as you so I missed it....and the guy just vanished. It was...spooky shit. Not to mention his name was Jesus...he told me.that in the jumbling. I hope he's ok.

Games like zomboid are inherently nihilistic, they display the innate meaninglessness of survival which you fight off hand and foot despite it’s inevitability; despite at the end of it all, it’s a meaningless experience to anyone but the person playing the game. you probably have a severe lacking in narrative/thematic comprehension, but I think you’ll get there one day :)

Burns like heck but not as bad as Scotch. Never drink Scotch. Scotch is awful. I bought a bottle out of curiousity in 2019. I drank two mouthfuls of it. The first time was just plain Scotch, and the second time I made a Scottish Pixie. You make a Scottish Pixie by pouring in a few tubes of Pixie Stix (not the big ones) and mixing it. Still tasted awful. You ever been given liquid hand soap for foul language? Scotch is only SLIGHTLY better tasting than that, and only because its aftertaste doesn't linger nearly as long.

You can actually make bleach using only fire, wires from the ship and the mouthwash. And considering they likely have some more stuff (not food tho) they could make way more. Adapt improvise innovate If you’re curious tho the way you make bleach is to evapourate the water from the mouth was (slow heating else the ethanol will be set on fire) and then collect the water in a cup. Then take two live wires and put it in the water, thats bleach. It’s scarily easy

Can’t edit on mobile but I would’ve added that making bleach also creates oxygen, mouthwash is surprisingly versatile. You can really buy time with it. Also another comment said you can use ethanol sugar and water for rudimentary cooking which are all mouth wash ingredients

I think the main character is also psychotic, some quick flashes on the screen show images and text that points to the main character Jimmy having a psychotic breakdown and therefore what he sees should not be counted as a reliable narrative.

So the implication seems to be that the MC attacked Curly from the back, and caused their crash? Somehow not satisfied with their position, or for whatever other reason that'll get revealed in the full version, but somehow Curly survived and is a mangled corpse being kept alive and fed painkillers.

I think the axe was for the other crew. It been a good while since the crash and they long ran out of food. Jimmy (The MC) probably went crazy and kill them for there flesh. The only reason why the former captain was left for last is to let him suffer just a bit longer.

Stories like this, Soma, the Alien franchise, Sunshine, even Portal, they really get to me. Being left with borderline strangers, coworkers, away from those you truly love with no hope of being with them again, your life dilated and twisted until you’re dead before you die. It’s a horrible situation, that’s why I love these stories.

So, a theory I have regarding the mouthwash was when Anya brings up the high sugar amount. Bacteria can thrive in high concentrations of sugar given this is sci-fi horror, we all know how that story goes.

@@TheGodlyGibus not sure if you are asking about the sugar part or sci-fi horror part, but: The sugar in bacteria is likely something I was wrong on (reading into it can be a bit confusing) but organism can thrive in high concentrated sugar. Given the huge amount mouthwash the crew in this game are being made to haul around and the game seems to be leaning into the The Thing or Dead Space type of game, we might see the crew losing their minds in this. I'm not an expert and that is only what I remember reading in regards to sugar, so, I will admit, I could definitely be wrong on that.

I'm only a little way in, but I'm actually really liking the use of color in this game. Things like the sunset pictures, which would normally be beautiful and relaxing but their artificial flickering nature makes the oranges really overwhelm everything and make you feel more tense. It's a really cool design choice

I think it's intentionally shown off that way to drive home one of the game's themes of capitalism, if it was portrayed in the way you described, things would look more "homemade" and full of emotion.

The main character is not a reliable narrator since he’s suffering a psychotic breakdown during the bulk of the game. In fact some hidden text points to Jimmy causing the crash and somehow trapping Curly in the cockpit to suffer his fate. This would explain the main character’s surrealist experiences, as he’s not mentally all there.

The demo already manages to hook players right into the story with it's unique character styles and deliverance of plot. I got so absorbed that I was startled by the abrupt end until I realized this was just the demo lol. Can't wait to see manly play more of this strange yet intriguing horror game when it's fully released!

You can make a lot with mouth wash if you can make fire and have power. You can separate it into water sugar and ethanol by distillation which you can do with fire and something to cool the gas. You can then drink the water and turn it into bleach and oxygen. You can also use sugar ethanol and water for basic cooking. You can also burn the ethanol for heat. It can make you last long enough without much damage if you’re careful when dealing with heating the mouthwash. Long enough so that you can fix up communications and get out of there.

tbh i wouldve not kept the captain alive. they had no antibiotics or iv bags. the dude should be in an artificial koma or on very high meds. theres no way hed survive and at that point thats just torture until he eventually dies. its amazing that hes even still alive at that point with that little medical equipment (probs just game logic tho anyways, but srsly the poor guy. no matter what he did..)

Hmm, sugary mouthwash. Heat it slightly to release the ethanol. Then, use electrolysis via exposed wiring to seperate the remaining water into hyrodgen and oxygen. You now have (mostly) just sugar and dye left, which is edible. Either release the oxygen to keep the air usable, or burn it to recombine it into drinkable water. That mouthwash could sustain you for weeks if you know basic chemistry.

This reminds me of a book I once read when I was a kid, it was about a spaceman that gets tricked by aliens into traveling back to Earth through space with his ship that for some reason moved really slowly and all he had to eat was dog and cat food, LOTS of them.
