I return to your video to tell that I went and purchased a Mannlicher-Schönauer model GK rather similar to yours yesterday, although mine is in 7x64 Brenneke, with a rather well loved finish, and wearing a Hensolt Wetzler 1.5-6x36 Diavari. Danish gun laws are not the worst in the world, but they leave us at the mercy of a slow bureaucracy. They cannot tell me when my application will be processed, but they can inform me that the applications they are currently processing were sent in in early May. Oh bother, this means there will probably be no roe deer in my freezer this fall. Maybe in January. Take care sir!

I picked up a full stocked carbine version of this rifle in 270 Winchester in the beginning of 2023. It was made in 1954, IRC. It had a B&L 2.5-8x40 non adjustable scope with an adjustable scope mount. It was top of the line in its time. Unfortunately the scope had flecks on the interior lens surface. No one services these scopes so I picked up a Swarovski Z3 2.5-10x42 for a replacement. It's a beautiful rifle. Your video helped sway me to buy it. Thanks!

I love my Mannlicher Schoenaurs, 1903's, 1908's etc., all are full stock/set trigger's/german claw mount optics, simply perfect.

There is an exquisite example at a local shop. It is in a transport case with documentation, was owned by a British colonel. It is in 9.3mm, a box of ammo is included. It was used on African game. Expensive but it really calls to me. Time to get a home equity loan...

Johnny Cash used one in the early 60s. On his Newfoundland moose hunt. Lots of pictures on the internet, he looks quite proud of the rifle.

This is my second favorite bolt-action rifle, after the K98K. I really like the earlier models of the Mannlicher Schoenauer, especially the ones with two triggers and a scope.

Fantastic video Mike, I do love the workmanship I see in that Mannlicher Schoenauer. I realize that a cheaper gun may shoot as well, but the engineering is there, and I believe that rifles such as the one you reviewed add knowledge, and add to the pursuit of the ultimate bolt rifle!

Hey Mike! I love this video. I am fortunate to have two Mannlicher Schoenauers. One is a 1966 model MCA .243 with a stock that looks just like yours (black end cap, monte carlo butt stock checkering, etc.). The other is a 1975 M72 .22-250 with the full Mannlicher stock. Both have the adjustable set-trigger system that is simply like no other I've ever experienced. I am not exaggerating when I say that these triggers are so extremely sensitive, crisp and precise, that you could nearly pull one just by thinking about it. To say that EXTREME CAUTION must be exercised when using that feature is an understatement!! Furthermore, I read somewhere and have come to understand that adjusting these set triggers can be a fool's proposition. The reason for this is that one runs the risk of setting them so light that, if you were to point the barrel to the sky, the weight of the trigger itself will cause it to fire! I have never tested either of my rifles for trigger pull weight when in the set mode (or otherwise), but I can tell you that it is far from being measured in pounds. I have taken them to the range on a number of occasions to simply ensure they've maintained their respective zeroes, and I will admit that I have had them startle me two or three times by sounding-off before I was truly in my zone! Oh, I almost forgot.. YES, they are extremely accurate! Two of my favorite all time firearms. Thanks so much for yet another outstanding video! John

Excellent review. The buttery smooth action has always set that rifle apart from all other mausers. It doesn't slide in and out, it glides. The 6.5 is a great rifle.

My dad had one of those back in the sixties he said even though it was a featherweight in .243 it would print a three shot group at 100 yards that a cigarette butt would cover.

In a previous comment to you, I described how a man tried to deceive me when he was trying to sell me a rifle. It was a Mannlicher Schoenauer like you have here. It had a cracked receiver in the area behind the bolt handle lug. I don't think it was a design flaw. I think the gun probably belonged to a reloader name Bubba who couldn't understand his reloading manual. Anyway, that is a very nice hunting rifle and I love those butter knife bolt handles!

Mike, I agree with you. It is the most beautiful rifle i have seen. Having been to Austria many times, I am recognizing their craftsmanship and sense of beauty. The bolt itself is a masterpiece of engineering and refinement.

I've been looking for quite a while and happened across a really nice Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1956 MC in .243 made in 1959 online that included mounts and a modern Burris scope. It looks nearly identical to the one you reviewed here. The old-world craftsmanship of those rifles is just awe-inspiring. I can't wait for it to arrive so I can take it to the range. I picked up a like-new vintage Bushnell Scope Chief 3-9 from 1959 to put on it. Would love a vintage Kahles but too pricey for me!

My first rifle purchase after I became legal age was an 88 in 8x57J. Set triggers, nice stock and express sights. Ammo was hard to find locally. I lived a couple of hours away from Mashburn Arms when they were in still in business. Found out after I sold it for a profit for 150 dollars that Mashburn had Norma ammo for it.

I have a MS Model 1952 half stock with a swept back blued bolt handle in 257 Roberts. A pleasant rifle to shoot - my +60 year old shoulder appreciates the quarter bores more and more. If I could offer just a few odds and ends to this fine tutorial. NECG in VT offers EAW and Paul Jaeger side mounts for the MS and did a terrific job fitting mine. The Model 1952 and later came with a metal plate inletted on the left side of the receiver to facilitate mounts such as the Jaeger, Griffin & Howe, Pachmayr "swing lo" type and the Echo, Leupold. I don't recall the model year but the MS came factory drilled & tapped for the EAW type dogleg mount. Redfield offered the MS mounts using conventional rings. I found a set at a gun show about 15 years back , just looking for the right MS to put them on. As an aside, the front sight hood for a Browning BPR makes an excellent replacement for the MS version. Lovely rifle, great presentation. Just a point though. It's not really a "Mannlicher" action, old Ferddy didn't have much to do with it, though he was plant manager at Steyr at the time. The man most responsible for that action and it's grampa, the 88' , was a fella named Schlegelmilch. OEW/Steyr had gotten a contract to produce the 88' and afterwards continued to offer that action in the follow on Romanian, Dutch and Greek contracts in somewhat modified forms. F.M. was quite a capable designer, but this one just wasn't his baby.

There's no way that rifle looks more than 55 years old! Not only has it been cherished, it looks almost unused.

i saw one of these in 264 win mag decked out in engravings, double set triggers, and a scope go for almost $3k. makes me feel like my 1903 and 1924 were a steal for $1k each

That Mannlicher-Schoenauer is a beautiful rifle and the shadow line cheek piece is a classy touch. I find it interesting that this particular firearm is in .264 Winchester Magnum at a time when the 7 mm Remington Magnum was taking the hunting world by storm, and now the .264 Winchester Magnum is making a comeback. I have mentioned having a G98/40 rifle based on a Mannlicher action. This rifle is a hybrid of a Mannlicher-Schoenauer and a K98 Mauser. The main difference is that it has a box magazine instead of a rotating magazine. The machining is precise and the action is smooth. As to whether the Mannlicher-Schoenauer is the finest bolt rifle ever designed is debatable. To have so many truly great bolt actions that allow for such debate and to have no wrong answers is a wonderful thing. My choice in this debate is the pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .375 Holland & Holland. Anyway, thank you for another wonderful video.

A gentleman's rifle. I owned Carbine, 1950's production, 308 Win. hard extracting. I traded it, to a gunsmith, for an American made rifle as repairing the extraction problem was more than I could afford. I miss having it, and I miss having it when I visit a public firing range.

The reason the lug is split on Mauser 98 is for the ejector to go through the lug. On a Ruger m77 or winchester m70 the ejector is placed lower and they have 2 solid front lugs

Thanks for this video Mike; a helpful intro to the Mannlicher-Schoenauer action, which I wanted to learn about, to compare with the Mauser 98 action. Re making these videos, I have a suggestion. Your video assistant is doing a great job but the camera's light meter is reacting to the brightness of the white tablecloth. The sensor's gain is reducing to compensate, which is making the detail in the dark parts of these very interesting firearms disappear. If you were to try a cloth with a more neutral colour, the details you are describing would stand out much better. The ideal solution would be a light to medium grey coloured cloth, with 18% relectance. Ha! That is - a grey card! 😃 The camera would love and understand what it's seeing and your demonstration videos would 'pop'! Thanks again and all the best.

The side mount is actually quite comforting. There are some issues with front mounts being drilled to deep in, making the chambre structrally unsound. At least the research, I did stated that. Such a sweet pull while repeating. The successor M72 is also a nice rifle, but does not come close to the pull. Also the inlay including the follower on the M72 is made of plastic.

The fit and finish is impressive but I don't like the bolt being so far forward as it may mean the stock changes position in my shoulder as I reach to cycle it.

I believe the 1903 MS carbine chambered in .256 was the rifle that inspired Bill Ruger to create his M77 International series.

The "butter knife" bolt handle is distinctive of the Mannlicher, but it's hard to see how comfortable it would be to work a bolt with that odd handle, especially when working it rapidly for a followup shot.

I just bought one marked made in Austria 1903 in 6.5x54 and find it elegant in its trimly stock and smooth bolt. I enjoy shooting open sights and find the rear flat sight more favorable to hunting vs other forms of open sights. You mentioned finding the manufacturer date and I cannot for the life of me find the reference material to give me the answer. My serial number is #199XX. Any idea the year of production or the resource to find out myself? Thanks for this and all your videos.

The Carcano was neither Steyr built nor Mannlicher designed. It was designed and built as the Modelo 91 (M91), or Novatuno, by Italians Salvatore Carcano of Turin Arms and General Giacomo Paravicino of Terni Arsenal to work with the new (1890) Italian 6.35x52 cartridge.

Thank you for this video. I have an MCA in .30-06 that I purchased from a deceased family member's estate. It had been used for hunting in Alaska, and has a crack in the black fore-end cap, which appears to have had some kind of epoxy applied to keep it from cracking any further. Can you suggest anyone who might be able to do a proper repair job on it?

NEVVER buy a Mannlicher Schönauer, where the front bridge was drilled or gave a cut out to take a mount. Those rifles are not reliable any more. There is only on correct way to mount the front of a scope on am Mannlicher Schönauer. It is a ring on the base of the barrel.
