My 63-cents worth: Many years ago, starting out in photography, all there was for me was manual focus. I'd shoot environmental and I'd shoot sports. We had aides, but in sports action it was muscle memory always in the end. Manually focusing is learnable. I did it (even with my not-so-good eyesight) so can you. As for all of what manual is, it is no more than just the same. Yes, at times, like when in the combat of photographing an event, auto-something is useful (to get 3000 images instead of 1000). Once learned manual-everything is like a walk in the park on a beautiful sunny day with rich blue skys filled with puffy white clouds. I liken it to when I delved into strobes. I had to learn, and to learn one has to understand that only within the shadows of our person dark times do we grow. Failures are personal dark times... and stay as such if we choose to wallow in failure. I am prone to want to always grow out and up (and not die).

Manny, I once used a folding garden cart like your "Dodge Caravan" and found it pretty handy. However, I converted a three wheel golf club carrier to a photo cart. The handiest thing about my "golf-photo cart" is that I can affix a light sand to it, so I don't have to "cart" (excuse the pun) the light stand around or have an assistant to hold it. This three wheel cart is really an ATV because it can go just about anywhere. I also have a smaller and lightweight stand for a hotshoe type of flash modified by an umbrella attached to the cart. I have a camera case attached for any accessories or extra lenses and I also have an Arca Compatible clamp attached. Since I like to shoot with a pair of cameras, I can have one in my hands and the other attached safely to the cart. BTW: I will often shoot with two different focal lengths on the two cameras or I will use a vintage lens on one camera and a modern lens on the other. That way I can have the advantage of the rendition of the vintage lens with the assurance that I will also have a fair number of technically excellent images. The cart folds and will fit in the back of my Subaru Forester.

I have version II of this lens, I take it to all my weddings because it's my "special team" lens, it gives me those 2-3 pictures that really change the pace of the wedding album, give it a twist, to something unexpected, refreshing the viewing experience. There are some moments in a wedding when you need to shoot manual, like when you shoot through the bride's veil, or through the spouses car's glasses. And there are moments when you want to shoot manual, because it fits the mood of the bride getting ready, lost in her thoughts... things like that. This lens seems to have a better backlight resistance than my version 2. However I don't think it would be worth upgrading just for that, what is your advice Manny? Is it worth losing money on upgrading from v.II to v.III?

I had the v2 of this lens and always regretted selling it. The lens produces a lot of throw away stuff, but it also provides images that will make you gasp. The shot that others will look at an go OMG. Once you have the bases covered this is a great lens to add to a collection and one that you'll have fun working with. I will rebuy it. In fact I'm going to contact the person I sold it to and see if they are done...

Can confirm that the aperture ring is stable on the new EF mount version.
@acouragefann
@acouragefann 2 жыл бұрын
I realize this is an old video at this point and you might not even own this lens anymore - but one of the ways I get some more resistance to any declicked aperture ring to keep it from getting turned on accident is by just adding one of those 5$ rubber geared focus rings from Tilta or Smallrig that filmmakers use for follow focus. If you then overlap this rubber geared ring a bit with the non-moving part of the lens before or beyond the aperture ring, that creates more friction and thus resistance. The more you overlap it, the more resistance you'll have because the rubber from the geared ring is partially "sticking" to the part that doesn't want to turn.

Could not tell from the video if you had focus peaking on or not. I shoot manual focus with peaking and zoom for my real estate photography and it’s very accurate. When I tried to manual focus without peaking I was not getting proper focus all the time. If you were not using peaking give it a shot it will make your life a lot easier.

It’s true to enjoy shooting a lens at its widest aperture, however don’t get stuck there you can stop that lens up to 2.8 and still get a shallow depth of field and it’ll give you a sharper image. I’ve been victim to always shooting at the lens widest aperture because I was told so by you tubers. You don’t buy a fast car to drive it at 30mph, but you can’t drive at 100mph the whole drive☝️

Your technique was fine the reason you were not able to feather the light well is physics. The area where your subject was standing had a lot of reflective surfaces (glass box) so no matter where you pointed your flash, it was always bouncing light back to that spot. It is a situation that you could address in post, however, without flagging the offending surfaces (which would also need to be addressed in post) then you will consistently have the issue. Not a you problem. Great shoot and review I have always loved your work.
