My dad also fought in three wars. I miss him every day. Always spoke calmly of his time in peril; absolutely no atheists in fox holes! Only saw him cry once about it. Found a grave in the cemetery in Luxembourg of someone he was told by a friend at the end of the war was alive. The guy died the day after his friend had seen him on one of the last days of the war in Europe. Said he thought of him from time to time and wondered about his life and hoped he was happy. Now Daddy is gone too. All four of us kids served to honor him. One of my brothers even graduated from USMA. Dad was really proud of him!

My two brothers and sisters survived for a time but my younger brother passed from Aids. Dad passed in 1977 almost one year after retirement which was such a sad thing. Even today we are torn between the love for our now deceased parents. Except for my deceased brother we all succeeded in one way or another. I miss my brothers and sisters in uniforms, especially those lost in battle in Iraq and died by suicide at home. I don't know if their sacrifice was worth it. Time will tell. But their families and friends never doubt for a second they would rather have them lived a long and good life. We hold no one responsible for our loss, our government who lied to us nor the enemy who took their lives. But when the drums of war start, stop and think. Is this really a just cause worthy of the most courageous among us? The American military will answer the call and fight. Just make sure we put our youth into noble causes because anything less robs them of life for nothing. Iraq Vet

Tomorrow, July 5th 2020, marks the 49th year since the passing of my beloved grandfather James J. Piper who served in the US Army during World War I. I grew up around him my entire younger life until I left home at age 22. He was wounded twice by German machine gun fire in the last great offensive of the Great War, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. I have his Purple Heart certificate conserved and framed along with some other precious memorabilia. We had a very special relationship as I was his first grandson. Pap was a 'tough' customer from the old school. He was raised rough - went in the coal mines at age 10, and had black lung. He also got a dose of mustard gas while in France over a hundred years ago. May his memory be eternal. I will never forget you, Pap, and think of you often.

No man can hate forever. I sincere hope that this 2sd Cold War ends soon and our two countries can be friends once more. Too much has been lost to hatreds and much can be gained by friendships. 93 year old WW II Soviet veteran of the Eastern Front. I tried to forget everything about the military (and being successful at that, but seeing this brings back painful memories) after seeing so much death and destruction, so much pointless hate and asking myself "why are we fighting each other"?

My father served in the British Army (Northamptonshire Regiment) in the immediate post-war period. He was a bandsman and a fine trombonist and euphonist. Later in life he was a conductor and arranger for brass bands in the Northampton area. This performance brought tears to my eyes. It's beautiful.
