you dont need a strong hand. You could try a negra guitar if you want the low action but more bass than a normal flamenco.

Play more. . .your left hand will get stronger! A bit more seriously, you can always lower the bridge saddle a bit (by filing bone off the bottom. . .CAREFULLY. . .a LITTLE bit at a time) to lower the action. If your nut isn't set up right (and out of the box its not on many factory-made instruments), you may be able to lower the slots there a bit too to get a lower action. If you aren't comfortable doing this, any competent luthier can do these things for you for a nominal fee. But really, there is a limit to how low you can get the action on any nylon string guitar. Nylon strings vibrate in a wider arc then steel, and you just CAN'T get a super-low electric guitar like action on one, or you'll get bad string buzz. With a flamenco guitar, a little bit of "buzz", particularly on the bass strings is considered part of the classic sound. . . .that's "OK". If you lose sustain because of low action, that's mostly OK too. Flamenco players also tend to favor high-tension strings that let you get the action a bit lower. With classical. . .no good.

+CreativeSlav. Try the Raimundo 125 Flamenco guitar. It's hand made in Spain and not too expensive compared to other hand made guitars. It's about 340 Euros (USED).

Yamaha fg820 very cheap and sounds good. If you are a begginer you wouldn't spend too much would you.

Must but the boundaries between a flamenco or classical guitar are changing and with a great guitar you can play both. I have a 1948 Marcelo Barbero with a spruce top. It has amazing tone and sustain. I would argue they have to be loud and easy to play. Apart from that that you can have a flamenco Negra with spruce and rosewood or you could go for a maple fretboard and Cocabola body. The possibilities are endless. I learned from Grisha Goryachev and Rafael (flamencoguitaist.com) that there are just Spanish guitars and it is very old fashioned to play a cedar body for flamenco. I have also learned from Ruben Diaz in spain and the Andalusian Guitars he uses come in every concevaable format. From 20 different wood choices for all parts of the instrument a carbon fiber bridge and actuon set up like a stratocaster . They are wonderful guitars. They even do fretless options which as someone who values the ability to produce a beautiful classical tone when necessary I find an abomination. But each To Their Own taste.

I had an Alhambra electo classical guitar built for ease of playing. Carbon saddle low action and tiny grain. I love it for classical and contemporary flamenco

They do not but traditionally that is the construction of a flamenco guitar. Cypress is louder and is very percussive for the golpe technique used in flamenco. It also cuts through the dancers because of the loudness of the feet against the tablao. But, there are flamenco negras. Using dark woods for the back and sides, mostly rosewood, and cedar or spruce for the top wood.

Flamenca negra guitars though won't be as percussive like a flamenca blanca.

He may be talking about Spain, Toledo, in particular where the Manuel Rodriguez guitars are made.

I'm pretty sure this asshole was picturing a mariachi. flamenco guitars _are_ lighter, but my understanding was that it was a result of the lessened wood density, which is chosen for a brighter, punchier tone with less sustain

He was absolutely on point with the description for both guitars. I myself play both styles of music, own both styles as well as repair and setup both styles being a technician. I agree with you though, I really have never seen a flamenco player standing up unless you want to count Gritos de Guerra or the Gipsy Kings. But masters such as Paco de Lucia or Juan Serrano and Paco Peña, no.

@@mackhomie6 cypress wood in general is light. Lighter than rosewood. And a flamenco guitar body is smaller than a classical, so that would also make it lighter.

Standing up is not the reason for the lightness. They are constructed lighter to allow for a more responsive and faster attack, particularly from the top. Typically the trade off is a little less sustain, which is also desirable for flamenco, and not quite as thick a sound character. Also, to say the flamenco 'HAS' to be spruce and cypress' is utter rubbish. That just refers to one particular traditional type, the flamenco blanca. There is also the flamenco negra, typically with a darker wood like rosewood for the back and sides, that has a typically slightly darker, warmer sound, and the two complement each other. This guy, while partly correct, is spouting black & white definitions when in fact it is quite grey.
