Wow! Yes. And keep that needle clean! I collect 78rpm records (Lonnie Johnson "Blues in G"... I never knew such music existed). I've several old '40s and '50s valve amp record players for just this. But, woooo... even with a needle replacement, they can be rough. And heavy armed. That old shellac can only take so many spins. I recently purchased a '65 Dual 1019 (because of the adjustable tonearm) and hit the internet road looking for a spare cartridge I could fit a Shure 91-3. Because, it seems like a decent poor boy solution. Thank you very much for this video. I'm going to experiment with different needles based on your very informative video.

I was going to ask, "Wouldn't it be best to play LPs with the same stylus that was used to cut the record? Any idea what that shape would have been?" But you answered it in your reply to C. Burgess, below. So my actual question is, does this have something to do with half-speed mastering whereby that stylus would be less inclined to hop from peak to peak at the slower cutting speed (to counteract the faster relative speeds closer to the inside groove? I have two questions: Is it true that microline stylus wears out the records more than the Shibata stylus and if yest to what degree? (let's assume that we change the stylus on time). And which one could read better records in very used condition (scratched records)?

3:51 : So why not build a microline out of two peices of diamond on each side of the stylus body with the stylus body made out of something that wears a lot faster e.g. steel. Then will you not have the best of both?

What's the best stylus for playing quadraphonic disks, SQ, CD-4, etc? I do not as yet have a quad system but my priorities are, 1) not damaging them, and 2) extracting the best sound. Thanks again.
