The Swapper is a fascinating and creepy game about constantly cloning yourself and then murdering the clones until you're not quite sure who you are anymore...

I guess excavating is about moving rocks, so the Sisyphus Project is a somewhat appropriate name, at least.

True, but a Sisyphean task is literally the process of failing to get a rock where you want it to go, so in that regard it's even worse...

@@ManyATrueNerd I heard once, though I dont remember where, that we can imagine Sisyphus is fullfilled moving bolders uphill more than he wanted to get the boulder on top of the hill. Once his task is completed and his purpose evaporates, the boulder rolls back down and he has purpose again. We can imagine Sisyphus is completely fullfilled, then strive to become Sisyphus.

@@ManyATrueNerd Yes, but I can't think a good company would require pressure plates to open doors or cloning to go up and down levels. I'd think it would be more cost effective to install stairs and doorknobs. So, really, the name is far from the worst part of the company's business plan.

Dilemma about clones brings memories of Jon playing Soma
@kabobawsome
@kabobawsome 2 жыл бұрын
Something I loved about Soma is that it didn't leave the typical questions open-ended. The game started with questions about "who's the real one" and was very clear there was a simple answer to that: "The idea of originality is a pointless distinction when it comes to the idea of cloned consciousness. A cloned consciousness is simultaneously both the original and not the original." Instead it moved on to THE CONSEQUENCES of that conclusion. Soma doesn't explore the philosophical implications of cloning too much, instead it explores the ethical and moral consequences of the philosophical position it *does* take.
@SomeUnsoberIdiot
@SomeUnsoberIdiot 2 жыл бұрын
@@kabobawsome Wrong. The answer is that the original is the original, and the cloned consciousness is a new entity, separate entity that branched off from the original. SPOILER . . . . In the case of SOMA, however, it's even simpler: it's a robot running human.exe, simulating a personality. There are no ethical or moral concerns, as it's literally walking NPCs; simulations of people doing what the programming said the actual person would do. Claiming that there are ethical or moral concerns there is akin to wondering if it's ok to kill giant rats in video games.
@olivialee1102
@olivialee1102 2 жыл бұрын
@@SomeUnsoberIdiot no, you're totally wrong. the robots are running simulations of functioning human brains, there is no difference between a simulated brain and a real one
@SomeUnsoberIdiot
@SomeUnsoberIdiot 2 жыл бұрын
Except that, as I said, one is real and the other a fiction. One is an actual human, the other is a simulator. One is human, the other is a program emulating a human. "there is no difference between a simulated brain and a real one" is simply false. And even if it were as you think, the human consciousness is more than the brain; practically everything, down to the bacteria in your guts, influences your thoughts and behaviour. I mean, really. You're saying that a robot is the same as a human if the floppy disk your insert into it is good enough. Maybe you'd also argue that the code that makes up human.exe should have rights, and that not running it would be unethical or some nonsense like that. And where would you draw the line? How accurate would the program need to be? 100%? 99.999%? 90%? And what if it's not a copy of an actual person, but an original or mismash program that created a "new person"? Would you consider that human? What if it did not claim to be a human? What if it behaved in a weird way? You just claim that it's a person because it looks and sounds like it. In other words, because the NPC is well-written and has good graphics, it's a real boy. My point stands.

It's a game about directing and planning a rail schedule, with the interface being closely inspired by the actual interfaces used by the people in charge of modern rail networks. I'll leave it to you to decide whether it would suit a video (or stream), whether never, soon, or after it leaves Early Access someday.

I honestly hate the idea of teleportation so much because it technically would just kill you in many cases and this is just never addressed most of the time. If your whole body is broken down in to atoms, photons or whatever and reconstructed the you that is reading this right now would have been destroyed and a new version of you would have been created who has no idea they just died. So why the fuck would I ever get in a teleporter? I'm super glad I probably won't be alive when they invent those. Portals only for me.

People are being silly. These clones are made with some "Sufficiently Advanced Technology", and have no thoughts of their own; they're still governed by the singular consciousness/will of the protagonist. The body is being replaced by some nonsense, but the mind remains singular and continuous. In other words, you remain you. You replace your body with, it seems, a 100% identical body, which is practically the same as not replacing it. Plus they have teleportation. Which is, depending on the setting, either magic or it kills you and creates new person at the other side. That person looks and thinks it just teleported, but the person who started the teleportation on the other side is dead. (bear in mind that I wrote this at 9:25 in the video; maybe something more shows up. But I'm already bored, so I'm not watching further)
