Not a misunderstanding, the rule at the time is that when someone was charged with a high-scale crime, all of their relatives and acquaintances working/possess business relationship with the palace will be summarily dismissed. Maomao was sold to the palace under one of these people, so Jinshi had to fire her.

The person's family that attempted to poison one of the consorts had connections with the people that kidnapped Maomao and sold her off. They were firing everyone that had any business dealings with them.
