Hawaiki Nui refers to the time when all continents were connected. Remember that!
Mythology tells us it was Mataoho's footsteps that broke up the land.
That's how the land was broken up into parts. Some parts were lost to the sea, while others rose out of the sea. Maui saw the land appear out of the ocean. That's where the story of Maui fishing the land up out of the oceans comes to be. There's also a story of how Mt Hikurangi came to be. When Maui fished up the land, Hikurangi was the first point to rise out of the ocean. He claimed this part of the land as his own - Te Ika a Maui. When Maui fished up this land, he reeled it out of the ocean towards the sky. The action of pulling up the fish towards the sky, 'Hikutanga' carries great significance. Why? The sky is sacred. The sky where our genealogy and stories begin before descending to our Earth Mother. It's like the fin of the fish coming out of the water when you pull it out with your fishing rod. You feel the fish biting and you pull the line-up, reeling the fish in and the line is thrown skyward. According to our ancestors, everything we know derives from the heavens. Everything including humanity, the forests, the animals, the birds all came from the sky. Even higher learning starts in the heavens. Our biggest clue lies in how the Creator made the first rays of the sunshine on the East - a symbol of enlightenment and intuition to be found in the East. We retain these stories so we understand - the light that shines upon us, it is not only a light that we see with the eyes, it is enlightenment. An understanding about how to retain and share our stories with the world. We are here as messengers. The light that shines first in the East is a ray of light connecting our thoughts to a higher energy and the world. As the sun travels, so do our thoughts and stories from the east to the west, to Taranaki. As the sun sets, we have comprehension.
