Map reading is a skill that I believe is vital...it was a skill that I would teach to all my students over a span of 25 years in my geography classes no matter what grade...many of my students still remember these lesson to this day even though many of them just use their phones...but as I tell them, no one can take away from you a skill learned...and the battery won't run out, or loose service either...lol...thanks so much for these lessons...

You are spot on and you did your students a great service by teaching them map reading. It's amazing how many people don't know how to even read a road map now. Granted, phones make life a lot more convenient, but exactly like you said, technology can and does fail... or at the very least loses charge. ;) I've taught map and compass navigation to home-school groups and to outdoor clubs and people seem to always be glad they decided to learn this skill. If you don't think map and compass skills are fundamental to staying oriented (aka staying found), then google "Geraldine Largay" ... who knew how to hike but tragically didn't know how to navigate.
