The 2024 edition of the famous Fred Whitton challenge saw just 12 riders achieve the magic sub 6 hour time. One of those riders was Henry Hunter. The 3rd finisher and the 1st U20 rider. In this podcast we discover Henry's tactics, his planning and his calm execution of the perfect ride.
We talk through the twits and turns of the route, Henry's nutrition strategy, his bike set up and what he carried.

Amazing work Henry. The two Le Col guys chopped my front wheel on Newlands, then chopped a rider further up clipping a wheel causing him to topple. Not cool.

Well done Henry! An excellent time and great interview. It was a pleasure riding and chatting with you out in Spain in February, when we were going in the same direction. I recall you mentioning that you were training for a sub 6 at FW, and you smashed it.

That's a mighty impressive time Henry, well done. To anyone unfamiliar, this is superhuman level performance, so strong at 20ish... we'd probably like to think we were that fast at that age but err, no we weren't....

Cracking effort Henry what a great achievement. I took part in this years and was one of the slowest on the day but would like to think one of the heaviest at 115kg and 46 yr old and carried way to much kit and food in comparison to Henry. Lessons learned and hopefully will be a lot quicker next year.

Love hearing and seeing what’s gone into the preparation of the Fred whitton, fair play to the fella👊 yet can’t help but feel a little pissed of, that I have failed to get into the the Fred on 3 occasions! Yet this guy has done 3 times, go figure. Oh I did make the reserve list number 276😂😂😂 so I should get in next year, that’s if I move to Lake District 👍🏻

What a great time, I rode for the first time and got 8.10 moving but 8.30 total, I rode a bit to conservatively as I hadn’t done it before, I think I could manage a sub 8 without some of the other traffic delays also. The rode to Keswick was interesting, I got stuck behind other cars but played it safe, there were a few fast riders overtaking cars with cars coming the other way, which is disappointing and could have caused a serious accident, I think it’s important to note although people want a good time, it’s not a closed road race

That’s seriously rapid. I’ve done it a few times now and never got below 7.15, and that’s after a *lot* of training. Ok, I’m twice that lad’s age, but I’m not going to kid myself; I wouldn’t have got within an hour of Henry at his age. That’s top work.

I imagine the Fred Whitton would suck. We have a fun ride with a made up history in Colorado Springs called the 719 (takes place the weekend closest to july, the 7th month the 19th) that is 2801 meters of climbing in 71.9 miles. The full ride is 5 laps of a course. I managed two.
