I really love the maple videos. Pines and conifers are much easier when you are starting out so they are what I have most of in my collection, therefore any instruction on how to shape or care for maples is very much appreciated. It all helps give me confidence that I won't end up killing a maple when I attempt one. Thank you for your efforts as always, Peter.

I have 3 Triedents, two of which are about 12 years old, but new to me. They were not styled, so this year I did some branch wiring. One of them has three trunks, and I have been having a heck of a time try to conceive a plan of which and IF two of them should go. It is a SUCH a confusing and stressful train of thought for me. The two 12 year olds also really have no movement in them, as the nursery did do anything to encourage it. With trunks 2" thick, I dont think I will be able to introduce movement, without perhaps trunk chopping the main trunk and letting a new leader start. Decisions, decisions.....It is mid summer now, and will wait until late winter, very early spring to decide how and what to cut. But seeing this tree, knowing it was at some point, multi trunk, is encouraging. GREAT video, thank you Peter.

i don't think the owner wants to create a shohin out of his tree. The maple shown is about 3 feet or so in height, to cut 2 feet of would totally destroy the tree. Remember that bonsai can be up to 25 feet high, even potted. Not all bonsai are tiny little trees that fit into your hand. And what Peter has shown here is not to keep focus on the faults but how to get the best out of a tree that has faults, but can be grown out over time (ok, maybe not in the current owners lifetime, but in future generations times)
@MikeHunt-lz2hq
@MikeHunt-lz2hq 3 жыл бұрын
But Peter if you change the front and you already have your branches set for the style your leaning towards won't it mess up the balance of the entire tree? I was under the impression that the first branches had to be in a certain order from right to left . Or does it not matter to much ? I'm just wondering as I'm still a neophyte and reading and learning as much as possible all the while watching as my trees thicken and mature before I mess with them too much .

@taiyoqun
@taiyoqun 3 жыл бұрын
I may have an idea, and I'm an extreme beginner, I've only watched a few hours of KZfaq, read a few books on Portuguese of all languages and tended to a bonsai for a bit. As I understand it, having a 50 year old tree grow on a tiny pot is artificial enough, so they try to make it as "immersive" as possible by making it look natural, by making it seem molded by nature instead of human hands, and a clean cut is too artificial. In nature, branches break kind of rough, either by animals, weight or wind, and the elements erode the then dead wood or it simply rots. So to make it more natural, either you embrace the beautiful dead wood (interesting topic in the bonsai world, look it up) or you make it seem like it never happened, by helping the tree cover the scars. However, I agree with you, scars are beautiful and can tell a story.
