Aliens- Combat Drop Alternate Version

This is a re-edited version of the combat drop sequence from Aliens, using an unused track from composer James Horner's score for the film. The alternate music begins around 2:30. In order to make the music fit, I had to cut out Hudson's rant about superior firepower, but everything else is the same.

Fun fact: Private Vasquez, the "tough guy" female soldier, is also in the Titanic movie, playing the famous but unnamed role of the ginger-haired Irish mother who reads a bedtime story to her kids as the ship sinks. She was also John Conners foster mother in T2 and later briefly was the T-1000 after he took over her body.

I just realised, Michael Biehn's character 'Hicks' in Aliens has a thing for Ripley, who is roughly 60 years his senior, as she was in Cryosleep for 57 years . Michael Bien's character in Terminator, 'Kyle Reece' has a relationship with Sarah Connor, who is 40 years older than him as he went back in time. Dude has a serious thing for cougars!!!!

what I loved about this movie is that although Ripley is the main character, they didn't over-focus on her. They allowed all the supporting side characters to develop their specific arcs. We got to see each character's attributes, attitudes, and personalities. As the movie progressed, Ripley's role progressed. Really good bit of storytelling.

What makes it as great as it looks is that it looks weathered, used, worn-in, lived in. Back then filmmakers took great care in making a movie as believable as possible because you’re telling a story, and you can’t skinp on details, especially when the military is involved.

All that running and yelling when they load on the drop ship - and drop - pretty much - no. The impression I've gained is that they're mostly quiet and mentally focused on their jobs. Hicks falling asleep - it probably the most realistic. The chatter by the air crew is OK. The other thing is - they show these guys chambering rounds before they board the drop ship. That is typical Hollywood. You would not want to chamber a round until you were about to land because an accidental discharge could have a negative effect on the drop. How negative would depend on what it hit - but - putting a hole in a space ship when you don't have enclosed helmets and space suits - would not be a good thing. Being in an APC you might not have a penetration of the drop ship - but - if the round didn't penetrate the APC - it might just bounce around inside it - which would also not be a good thing. .

@@BobSmith-dk8nw There are definitely Hollywood aspects to it so it's not 100% true to what I'd expect in the real world, but it's definitely a huge improvement to those movies where someone's running around in a spandex suit with no gear and with no real organized team tactics firing a laser pistol.
@BobSmith-dk8nw
@BobSmith-dk8nw 3 жыл бұрын
@@hoppy6437 I didn't mention that this is a very good film. So - my remarks about it's inaccuracies are just for the purpose of pointing out when something is Hollywood rather than real. You're always going to have problems with reality in a movie like this - because - it's in the script that the unit will be destroyed by the Aliens - the only question is - how are they going to do it. As good as this movie is - and I really liked it - this operation was set to fail from the get go - when they only assigned one squad to it. That - and the idea that there was no crew to their space ship was absurd. Here - the Aliens are represented as an unstoppable force - when they were not really all that tough. On the Nostromo - in _Alien_ - their acid based blood was a problem in that it could eat through the ship - but then - all the crew had to do was don space suits and blow the thing to hell. Then patch up the holes. But - that is common place among monster movies - in that it isn't so much that the monster is a total bad ass - as the humans it is killing are stupid. .

You'd never believe how small the budget was for this film, especially by today's standards trying to achieve the same things. Everything about this movie was brilliant: the script, the casting, the visual design, the cinematography... it's just a classic! You know it's great when you watch other stuff and see all the things they ripped off from this film!

A lot of these cliches do go back to Frank Herbert's "Dune" from 1965 & Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" from 1959. For example, the space marines & mecha, like the ones you see here in Aliens (and other movies such as Avatar 2009 & computer games such as Halo) basically came from Starship Troopers 60 years ago. Star Wars got many ideas from Dune. Alien/Aliens is just one of many movies that has helped propagate those old sci-fi ideas, tropes & stereotypes that were born in the 1950's & earlier.

@@brienmaybe.4415 not even...and I'll tell you why, cause this is genuine and not contrived. Look at the script, the Non-PC digs the characters make to each other in jest...it comes off as natural and light-hearted. In the end, they all respect each other and fight for one another. They are literally all likeable and it has nothing to do with the fact of their gender or color, but because they are relatable people/just human. You don't have the forced "oh look at me, I'm a strong woman!" "Look here! I'm a person of color!" It need not and should not be said when it's organic/ natural, not contrived and forced. It's patronizing and tacky when it comes off that way...the way modern PC films do it.

True.. I wish to one day see them pick up right after Aliens, with Ripley, Hicks and Rebecca in the lifeboat (at this point I would be fine with recasting, even though I wanted to see Sigourney to kick ass one last time again so much. (Thanks Ridley!) But there are no movies of this quality nowadays. They took time to suck you in (remember the first few minutes of ALIEN 1979? No words for a very long time, just camera panning, tasting every carefully weathered surfaces, hard and cold, soft and hot). The director achieved visual masterpiece (I guess, thanks Ridley!), a piece of cinematographic art. I have the feeling Hollywood does not care about art anymore. The movies nowadays are products to be consumed by customers, their content strictly defined by marketing department, people infected by politics, business strategists.....all but true ARTISTS. People with unending passion for their work, exceptional talents who crave to show their stories in a new and bold way. Not to satisfy KPI's or shareholders, but for the sake of creating art, part of culture which will be remembered for decades.

I love how Hicks sees a combat drop as the perfect opportunity to take a nap. It's such a great character moment that speaks volumes. He's seen so much action and so many drops that the turbulence doesn't bother him, he's got nerves of steel, and he's practical enough to grab some shuteye when he literally can't do anything else, because there's no telling when he'll get the chance next. What a freakin' MARINE.

It’s quite common for troops to sleep on the aircraft prior to mission insertion. The amount of time spent in preparation, planning, rigging equipment, etc. doesn’t allow for much time to sleep. By the time you load the aircraft, you’re smoked. So you just crash until the 20 minute warning.

I'd argue that it's not cyberpunk, which tends to go for style over substance when it comes to tech. The 'military' aspect of the production design took precedence over the 'sci fi' aspect, and the result was futuristic military stuff that looked much more grounded than a lot of other SF military gear. Cyberpunk movies, games and other media seem to prefer military gear that was made to look and sound futuristic, without regard to practicality.

@@mattrobson3603 I recall some of the concept art by Sid Mead, which was way more sci-fi looking, with the Sulaco being more globe-shaped, the dropship was more like a flying wing and the APC would dock into a notch in the bottom of the dropship, becoming part of the fuselage. It all looked really cool, but really didn't fit the grounded look Cameron was going for
