It’s interesting how Nintendo handled the tutorial area. By hiding the sword and forcing you to find money to by the shield, players will inevitably learn all the skills to traverse their environment for the rest of the game, all safely away from enemies
@Jigsawn2
@Jigsawn2 Ай бұрын
I’d forgotten about how to get the sword. I do agree about learning skills but it’s stupid for them to put the sword tutorials before the sword, I bet loads of players don’t want to jump on ahead with the training assuming they need it. I remember getting stuck for ages in the village as a kid, good job mapo pressed on!
@Viennery
@Viennery Ай бұрын
@@Jigsawn2 I disagree. Those signs act as a hint to look around there, with koriri placed right next to the opening to promote going over there and talking them him. Not giving it to you right away ensures you pay attention and learn how to play before you find it.
@Afreshio
@Afreshio Ай бұрын
@@Jigsawn2 Hard disagree. In 98 most players would felt the controls, camera and actions very alien as this game was breaking ground. It was necessary to hide the shield and sword so not to overwhelm players with too many actions. And this also makes you explore the zone and do lots of stuff before the combat system enters.
@Jigsawn2
@Jigsawn2 Ай бұрын
@@Afreshio I know, I played it at release. I'm not saying they shouldn't have hidden it, it's just that they hid it after the tutorial for it, which is pretty counterintuitive. In 1998 I was 11 years old. I was friends with this kid at school and we would stay the night at each other's houses. I had a SEGA Genesis that I bought from my cousin for 100 dollars with several games and sort of dabbled in videogames at the time but I mostly was a play outside kid. Then when I stayed over at his house he had an N64. He had Mario 64, Bomberman 64, and Ocarina of Time. He was a bit older than me and it was his game so he was the one holding the controller but even though I was only watching, I fell in love instantly. I saved up money from cutting grass for the next few weeks and bought myself a shiny new N64. The stipulation was that I could only buy it if I got a game that my sisters would play also. I came home with Cruisin USA, a racing game, which I didnt really want but I knew what my next purchase would be. I spent the next few weekends renting Ocarina from a local video and game rental place and played up until the third dungeon. Then I finally went out and bought it along with the Prima Games strategy guide, not for hints or solutions but because it was filled with official artwork. The next several months it consumed my 11 year old life. I took the guide to school and read through the parts that I had already cleared at lunch and recess. My friends and I shared all the neat secrets we found and learned from one another strategies and clues. To this day those months are some of my fondest memories of my childhood. Let yourself be transported to Hyrule. Really take it in. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did all those years ago.

It's funny, but the way that I found this game is absolutely wild. It's actually mostly about Nintendo in general, but still. I am from Russia and Nintendo games were never really THAT popular in here, in early 00s there were mostly just illegal copies of PC games on the market. However, when I was like eight and it was 2011-2012, I started watching youtube for the first time... And somehow ended up finding a new super mario 4 people co-op playthrough. IN ENGLISH, a language that I couldn't even understand a single word of. I could onlu understand when they were laughing and for what reason, and somehow that was entertaining enough for me, and so I even saved the tab, and rewatched that video multiple times during the years. And, well, since I watched one Mario video, I got recommended even more, and I just kept on watching them, slowly getting to know more about Nintendo franchises. I remember especially loving TLoZ Windwaker, and Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. Back then I wished for someone to play those games on russian youtube so I could understand them. And now, years later, I only watch english videos. Nintendo might have unironically been my first ever fandom, and I am glad to be back into it years later, now enjoying it fully. Life is a bizarre journey

The legend of zelda series has always been very ingenuitive. Some things really changed the industry (like putting a battery in a cardridge so you could save your progress, or targeting your enemy), and some things were a complete miss or just not ready yet (motion controls). But you just never know what Nintendo thinks of next. And they want their players to do that same thing. Just not with mods though, because then they will sic their lawyers on you.

This is going to be a interesting playthrough because Mapo tends to be very observant and this game has a, trial by fire type of thing, or trial by water I should say?, or maybe not, we were dumb kids back then, maybe an adult won't have any issues. I wonder why nobody told Mapo that there's a PC port of the game. I guess it a bit of a pain in the ass to install so an emulator is the best way to go about it.

Dont know what it is but when i saw you were doing a blind OoT lp i got giddy. As many others said i also played this as a kid and it was utterly magical. Your imagination fills in the world where the graphics can't. And the lore sequence the deku tree gives you makes me emotional every time i see it. The triforce is SO important in the Zelda series and lore and to see it shafted hard in BOTW/TOTK was kind of a let down (and i enjoyed those games a lot, but they werent Classic ZeldaTM). Love thus game for being so mysterious as well. Why do the kokiri die if they leave the forest? Why are they all children? Those strange stones with a piercing gaze...where have you seen that eye symbol before? ;))) so many mysteries......... Well Mapo, you have your wooden shield, your little sword, an emerald, a fairy, and the heavy cloak of destiny on your small shoulders...time to leave the forest...see you next vid! 🌲🌲

This game and Majora's Mask left a huge impression on my childhood. Even after these last two decades, I don't think I've ever played more imaginative and atmospheric games than those two. Maybe it's nostalgia, but for me the later zeldas don't compare.

I LOVE watching others play this game for the first time! It's such a nostalgia, as I can picture my 8yr old self sitting in front of the tv after school just playing this game for hours! Had no internet to help us solve the puzzles or riddles and the time put into these games is just crazy! But I love watching others go through the same thing, many don't just sit and play these games like this anymore! It's soooo refreshing to watch

This is probably one of my most favorite games in the world. It's got an amazing story and style that touched my heart when I was a child. The second biggest reason is that this was the one game I bonded with my older brother with when it came out. I stood in line with my brother at Walmart the day it came out, and watched him play it. This game made me want to become a great hero who fights evil and protects those who can't protect themselves. Ultimately leading me headfirst into military service where I put my heart and soul into every day. Just wanted to share my story, since after today we all share a connection through this game.

Loved the episode! I'm one of those people that grew up with this game and it informed a lot of my fantasy love from there. And it's so great to see another person fall in love with that golden era of earlier Nintendo~ It's really just good ole innocent fun and really gives you the room to be able to be a curious child again. In a wonderful world~ Can't wait to see more! :D

In title screen options you can change targeting from "switch" to "hold" which helps z-targeting tons and becomes the standard after majoras mask. You have to hold away/back from enemy and press z again to stop locking on in the default (switch) targeting mode.
@zach.0
@zach.0 Ай бұрын
Yes, it's weird that this isn't the default since it's basically the most common/definitive way to play.

It's so awesome to actually see someone play through the game the first time! I was born the same year this came out the caboose of my family, so when my siblings played it for the first time, I was too young to play it myself. But was old enough at some points to watch it be played through again and again. So, I never really had a true blind playthrough. But I'm content with living vicariously through you with this!

It is so refreshing to see someone genuinely reacting to OOT for the first time. I grew up watching my brothers play it and then getting to it myself a few years later. It no longer hits me as hard as it once had. Saying that, thank you for helping me remember why this was my favorite game for so very long! And i have to commend you on pronouncing some of these names. They baffled my mind for longer than I want to admit!

THE absolute GOTYAY. A truly timeless masterpiece, that's a joy to revisit, year after a year. If you claim to be a gamer, and haven't played OOT (and MM too, preferably)... saying you're "missing out" is an enormous understatement. The year 1998 in general was massive, with OoT arriving alongside mega classics like MGS1, Half-Life, Starcraft, Thief, RE2, Pokemon R&B...

Oh, and tiny protip: You can switch the targeting mode from toggle to hold from the game's main menu options screen. Unfortunately only doable before loading a game. However, it might help during the combat a ton.

Okay doing a lot better than many ppl playing for the first time in the modern era. You’re actually using game mechanics like lock-on, talking to NPCs, reading signs, heck you’re even using Navi to check on enemy info!! I see so many ppl struggle with the game just running past everything and not interacting with anything and then whining cos the game hasn’t pulled them by the nose with “go here” text or big glowing arrows.
