First and foremost, my apologies for some voice editing errors. I hope this does not distract from the content.
In this video I cover how to extract map images from a PDF and then how to place any image on a MapTool Map. This will also touch on how to use maps found on the internet.
Different controls
Paint: Use the “Select” tool to select parts for copying
Ctrl+C=Copy
Ctrl+V=Paste
Ctrl+Z=Undo
Ctrl+A=Select All
Maptool Grid Controls
Ctrl+G=View Grid
Ctrl+Shift+A=Open Grid Toolbox
Grid Toolbox
Left Click+Drag=Move the maptool grid
Right Click+Drag=Navigate around without adjusting grid
Mouse Wheel Up=Make grid smaller
Mouse Wheel Down=Make grid larger
This tutorial uses MapTool, Foxit Reader, and MS Paint.
You can download MapTool by going to this link and clicking on the MapTool Icon. I try to use the most current version. www.rptools.net...
This video was made using MapTool Version 1.4.0.5.

Just a couple tips. Firstly, if you copy and paste the image out of most of Paizo's PDFs, it leaves all the text behind and just copies a blank map, so no need to paste over the squares. Secondly, if you have a map pack in PDF format, there are many free online Jpg exporters that can just export each page as a jpg that you can use later. I'm in the process of building a folder of hundreds of maps to switch in and out.

awesome tutorials! FYI, you can resize the image vs grid to keep a consistent 50 pixel grid. And a easy way ro do that is right click on you map and choose Resize Map...

I am not sure what you mean. This is more thank likely a failing on my part to understand.

I tried messing around with the Auto Resize option. I'll have to look into it and see if I can make it work. So far I have not succeeded.

In Tutorial 7, when you bring a map into MapTool, you do something which sets the top left coordinates of the map to 0,0. Can you explain in a bit more detail how you do that please? I can't find the method anywhere and things happen a bit too quickly in the video for my old eyes to follow the action! Thank you very much for all your efforts. I have found the entire series so far very informative, and look forward to any more you can produce when time permits.

Alan Hoskins I just click and drag it by the upper-left corner until the coordinates in the bottom of MapTool read 0, 0

Thank you, Thomas. I've also since found that if you select New Map and add a map from within the pop-up box the upper-left corner of the imported map automatically defaults to 0,0. I don't know if there are any disadvantages to doing it this way though.

For unknown reason I am not able to change my image size in order to match grid perfectly. Any idea why? The map was already saved, I have active background and select tool.

The process of dropping an image file onto a new map seems to only drop the images as a token now even if the background layer is selected. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this something that has changed in the software I have a dozen maps in my campaign that were created correctly a few versions back but now the same process isn't working that I used previously.

I am trying to move the grid to make it align with the grid on my map but it keeps jerking and not moving the grid in reference to my dungeon image in the back ground. Any ideas why the grid wont move and only jerks the dungeon pic and grid?

How to 50x50 tokens looks when you drop them on map grids 178x178?

Brad Ford not having access right now I will give you my best answer. If I am wrong someone else please correct me. Your tokens would be too small for medium so MapTool will blow them up which will make them look pixelated. It would be even more pronounced with tokens larger than medium.

Any reason you use two seperate images instead of adding your traps as tokens with the trap info in the hidden layer?

Sam Ferree I think I understand what you are asking being why use the hidden layer when you could just use objects (or token) layer with the indie in the GM notes. I've got no reason other than personal preference. I like my traps to always be hidden. I also like the hidden layer because when I select it it brings up the pop up notes. No other good reason I can think of now.

What he meant was why use two copies of the same map. Instead of putting a GM map over the top of the player map just drop Trap & Secret door symbols onto the Object or Hidden layers and set the Visible to Players flag as appropriate. Cuts down on campaign file size, memory usage and CPU load. If you are going to put in VBL for Fog of War and the GM map you added doesn't perfectly align with the Player map then what you see may not match what they see.

Sam Ferree well I’m really late here. For these maps Pathfinder only gives a GM map so u have to edit a player map. I just throw one map in another to save image editing time.
