How to Clone/Copy Windows to a New Hard Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) - Acronis True Image

A great way to improve the performance of your computer is to upgrade from your old mechanical hard drive to a SSD (Solid State Drive). However when upgrading the drive containing Windows (or any other operating system) it's nice to be able to keep all your old applications and files and not have to start from scratch and reinstall all your programs and copy over all your important files manually. The good news is there are Drive Cloning utilities out there like Acronis True Image that allow you to clone your old hard drive bit for bit so you can upgrade your OS drive and keep all your stuff just the way you had it. This video is designed to help beginners who have never done anything like this before download and install Acronis True Image, Clone their OS (Windows) drive and then switch the Boot Priority in their motherboard BIOS/UEFI. Get ready... you're about to not be a drive cloning noob any more. :)

Hey @Maraksot78 ! I was wondering, because i was planning to do the same as you did in this video but from an sshd to an m.2 nvme ssd. when it's done cloned and the boot priority order is organized, how can i delete my other sshd to get more available space in this disk?

Western Digital now provide a more basic free version of Acronis for use with WD drives. It does cloning, back-up, New Disk and drive cleaning and I'm using it right now to clone my WD HDD to a WD SSD at no charge.

This tool will not work for the disk with bad sector, but aomei did.

Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial. Worked perfectly in my Dell Inspiron 5675 desktop. I had a 3TB HDD from 08/2015 and switched to a new 1 TB WD SN570 NVMe. I removed my HDD, restarted and the Dell recognized the NVMe as primary boot immediately, no issues. I began by using Macrium but it kept giving me errors (0 & 23) so I used Acronis (got it free because I had the WD drives) and it cloned in one take - approximately 30 minutes for approximately 250 GB.

Excellent tutorial! Spoken in simple terms and easy to follow Acronis software. This western digital customer loves that you made the link for initializing (from your previous video) so readily available. Just upgraded from a 750 gig hdd to a 2tb ssd without a single hitch! My almost 10 year old Asus q500 has never been snappier! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

The first pc I built started off with just a cheap AMD Athon 3000g with 8gbs of ram and a 500gb HDD. I have slowly upgraded all of my parts to an RTX 3070, Ryzen 5 3600x, and 16gb of fast ram. Despite these upgrades I was confused as to why my pc still had trouble loading games and took a while to get up and running and recently learned that storage has a big impact on performance. I just bought a 1tb M.2 drive and am excited to experience faster load times! Thanks for the video

I just want to know how to convert a disk to gpt if i have files on it and i don't want to delete them, any tools recommend? I find aomei partition seems good to deal with it, whatever let's see.

What about if I want to only clone a partition? As I have a 1TB HDD thats partitioned however the new SSD is only 512GB so is there a way to only clone local disk (C:) as with both disk (C:) and (D:) combined is already more than 700GB

Arconis has now replaced True Image with "Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials" and it behaves a little differently. I am getting stuck at a "what to exclude" step when trying to clone a 3TB HDD to a 1TB NVME SSD. The HDD only has 153GB of the 3TB as used space and the rest is 2.7TB of free space. It is trying to copy the free space, any easy idea on how to troubleshoot that?

I have Acronis True Image 2020. I tried to use it to clone my Laptop C drive to a Seagate 1 Tb portable drive (via a USB port). No trouble selecting the source and target drive, but TI did not present the screen asking how I intended to use the cloned drive, AND when I checked the Seagate drive "folder" no data or files are shown and it still shows full capacity. Any ideas?

Can I delete everything that was on my old Windows C: HDD? Also the windows icon is still hovering over windows c: drive even after I changed bios order to ssd? Should I be worried? Couple questions: I am planning on doing this with a computer. It currently has a Hard Drive, and I am going to install a SSD M2. When doing the clone part, do I need to format the new SSD first, or will that automatically be done during the cloning process? Also, I plan on removing the old hard drive, do I still need to go into bios to change boot priority, or will the computer automatically choose the new SSD with that being the only option?

Hey Maraksot78, I am planning to buy a NVMe SSD. My current HDD has 2 main partions C: and D: with some hidden recovery partitions.. but I just want to clone the Partions that contain bits related to OS and C: Drive and skip the D: drive completely. What is the way to do this?

i have an issue maybe someone can help with, I've successfully cloned my ssd onto my new samsung ssd using the data migration software they provide. The issue is that when i switch the boot priority, it doesn't return to it's normal state using the new ssd, but rather a set up page for windows. I used a usb to boot windows when I built my pc 3 years ago, but even with copying those files onto the new ssd it wouldn't boot nor when using said usb it wouldn't boot.

Hey, I saw your video "Why isn't My Headset Mic Working & How do I Fix it", I have and 1 - 2 splitter cable to connect both inputs in to my pc as my headset has only one 3.5 mm jack, and I've tried everything, but it still does not work, and instead to listen to me, the microphone listen to my computer, like when I open a KZfaq video the microphone is actually detecting those sound instead to my, basically it listens to my desktop.

I tried cloning my drive this weekend to make it a bootable OS with the Acronois True Image and it doesn't seem to want to clone on there, it tells me that the disk is successful cloned but when I restart the computer my window does not boot up from my new Nvme SSD PCIe drive. Do you have an troubleshooting that I could do? or why it would not work? or do I have to install windows 11 on the new SSD drive, luckily this is a newer computer so not much on the computer at the moment. If I have to install windows 11 on the new SSD would I just transfer all the files from the HDD onto the new SSD once I reinstall windows?

I purchased a new HP with 256gb SSD and I want to install the WD Blue 4Tb and went to clone the 256 using the Acronis program. When doing so I connected the WD SSD drive to the only SSD Port 2 available. When starting the clone disc function it showed the interface as RAID. Another video I watched on the process stated not to use an SATA port that is designated for RAID. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. And how can you tell if it is a RAID Sata port? I can't find that info anywhere.

My PCB does not have 2 slots for m.2 I am trying to upgrade my 512 m.2 to a 1TB I have the 1TB plugs into the USB port and my 512 is in the computer in the program it does not populate the new m.2 on the clone page any help?

I hope someone with experience will be able to answer this question from a newbie: my OS is on a 500gig m.2, & I just purchased a 1tb m.2. I'm going to clone onto a 1tb hdd, & change the boot drive to the hdd. So...once I swap out the old m.2 & replace it with the new one, do I make another clone onto it from the hdd, so I can format the hdd afterward?

When using Acronis to clone a W10 boot drive, is it really necessary to initialize a new drive first? I didn't, and Acronis copied the MBR automatically. While the cloned drive can be used as a data drive, it is not recognized as a boot drive, but this may be that my source drive for the cloning had corrupt boot information, which is what prompted me to clone a new drive. Another issue may be that the source drive is an HDD and the destination drive is an SSD, so I may need to toggle something in the BIOS in order for the cloned SSD to boot properly.

What if I have a 250gb m.2 ssd thay is my main drive, and want to upgrade it to a 2T m.2 ssd? How can I copy one on to the other with only one m.2 slot on my motherboard? I do have a 2t HDD but I have a ton of picture, and stuff I don't want to loose.

Hey, thank you for this tutorial. I have a question, I'm currently planning to upgrade from Sata SSD to NVME SSD, and will follow this method for cloning into the new NVME. My system is currently on Legacy. After upgrading to NVME, do I need to click on something to change it into UEFI??? or will UEFI be the default since it's NVME? Keep up the good work man! I have a 500 gb SSD that my Windows operating system is on I have multiple external hard drives but I was thinking about upgrading my main 500gb SSD to a 2 TB SSD. Do you think it is better for me to replace the original system drive? or should I just simply add the other SSD into the mix? I plan to use this SSD for games and other things such as video files I want to edit. So I was thinking about moving one of my Long term storage hard drives to another position and put the two terabyte hard drive in the secondary position. Of course the other option is to simply replace the original system drive with the 2 tb SSD, looking into it it doesn't really seem that simple 😅.

I did all of this, changed boot priority, now my Lenovo starts up exclusively in Automatic Repair. I can open BIOS and change boot priority back to the original hard drive, it boots windows no problem. Any suggestions?
