【Bessho Onsen Ryokan Hana-ya】
Bessho Onsen is a hot spring resort in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. It is said to be the oldest hot spring in Nagano Prefecture with a history of 1,400 years. It is also called the “Kamakura of Nagano Prefecture” because of its many historical buildings.
Bessho Onsen has soft, slightly alkaline water with a faint scent of sulfur.
Ryokan Hana-ya was built in 1914 by a local temple carpenter, and the entire building is designated as a registered tangible cultural property. The “Taisho” period (1912-1926) was a time when traditional Japanese culture and Western culture were beginning to mix, and this is evident in the architecture.
This time I stayed in room 21 in the main building. This room has gorgeous ceiling paintings and a beautiful view from the window. There are three bathhouses in the building: “Marble bath”, “Wakakusa bath”, and an “Open-air bath”, all with free-flowing hot-spring water.
Ryokan Hana-ya is a hot spring hotel where you can experience the beauty of Japanese architecture and the charm of a Japanese-style ryokan.
