I take a look at the Marbles MR278 "Gi Knife." Is this inexpensive copy of the famous Mil-818K Military Utility knife worth the $8.00 asking price?

My wife has one, no rub, no wobble. Perfectly acceptable user knife. Keeps it in her lunch bag, this is a safe knife for her to have with her at work, totally non-threatening. As long as you think of Marbles as inexpensive users they're great for the most part.

Had the gi version til it was stolen. Used it for about 40 years as a can opener, screwdriver. Got a new one recently. Couldnt be more pleased. Feel dressed again. Have my can opener back. Also Id add, the knife blade came sharpened quite well- cuts fabric and cordage well.And it doesnt have a broken back spring like my old one...

This is the one I bought a few weeks ago. Mine came with a survival tool that had a sfork, a GI can opener and a bottle cap lifter. The only issue I had with mine was the can opener had wobble. All the other blades were good and tight. My punch didn't rub the main blade either. It is hands down the sharpest knife I have ever unpackaged.

Oh so many years ago in the 1950's Boy Scouts carried surplus US Army knives of which this is a copy. I bought several from SMKW, for price shown in the video, sometimes they do not have them in stock, so I stocked up; because they are a sturdy camp knife for a good price. My son has his all the time, carrying in a sheath is a good way not to lose it, SMKW has those too. There are more expensive camp knives on the market that do not have good reviews, reading the reviews is a good use of time in my opinion. Maybe some day they will not be available, considering where they are made; that is why I have several just in case. Happy Trails To You!

For the price it is hard to argue about the quality of the knife. The only real issue is an iffy cap lifter which is almost obsolete these days.

RHINO 54, the variety is actually quite astounding. Yes they are all similar but then every company tried to make it their own. This is especially true before WWII when the companies were still trying to find a decent can opener.

Hi Rhino. I happen to own both. Apparently the blades on these knives are the same. Similar springs as well. The main difference other than the covers, bolsters and bail are the brass liners and spacers on the Kamp King. I carry my marbles a lot. I filed the lower jaw of the caplifter. It's a bit tight out ot the factory. The punch was also sharpened. It takes a wicked edge. I also polished the main with 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper and removed the logo. If you look closely at the government spec drawings, they allow for bending the reamer and can opener for a better fit. If you have US$ 11.00 to spare, you can find a combo which includes this knife and a spork/bottle/tin opener tool and a carabiner. This spork is a copy of the one included in some Australian ration packs. It sounds like a good deal. Take care buddy. be safe!

I won an eBay auction. It is a box of various knives. The 2 leaders in the box is what may be a Camillus US knife and a Swiss Champ. But it only had one picture, and zooming in make it look like a Big Foot sighting. The general consensus is that the Champ is a fake, and I'm beginning to think the same. I am away and won't be able to open the box for some time. I would love to share the photo with you and let you tell me what you see.

Knives made by the knife mastercraftsmen of Sheffield England would also put a slight bend in some of their blades inorder to facilitate the blades fitting in the handle space. This was not a cheat or mistake, just a means to maximize usage of space. I agree that the Marbles knife is worth the $7.00 ...I mean really just what do people expect in a "military style" EDC for under ten bucks? They make great "first knives" for your children or grand kids.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
Sharp Knife, if it’s a pocket knife with two blades working on one spring then most likely blades are slightly bent or the tang is shaved. Fact of life. Exactly, $7.00! Nothing fancy and you’re not going to cry when it breaks or you lose it. Great knife to learn on.

umm ... the "bent" blades is called "kinking". My 1975 Army Reserve issue Western Cutlery manufactured "Demo" knife, c.1947 ~1954 Imperial "Engineers Knife" (pen blade instead of the more common punch/awl/reamer 4th blade), my c.1980 Ulster Official BSA 4 blade Scout Knife, RR Scout Knife, and new Marbles MR592 Orange G--10 Scout Knife, and my two Marbles MR278, all have the spear point blade is kinked to clear the punch/awl/reamer blade. Those with a long screwdriver/caplifter blade, it is kinked to clear the can opener. In the 62 ... 63 years I have carried a 4 blade 2 spring "Scout"/"Demo"/"Engineers" knife, I have never noticed the blade was kinked when using it. If the blades are not kinked or ground down for clearance (grinding off up to 1/4 to 1/2 the thickness of the blade costs a lot more than kinking a blade, and does not weaken the blade against lateral forces during use.) or using four blades under 1/2 the blade well length, you're not going to fit the blades in there. The two spring 3 blade stockman is the same way. At a minimum the Spey and Sheepsfoot blades are kinked. OH!!! And, lets not forget the 4 to 6 blade Congress! All four blades were kinked on the two examples of that pattern I had. (I find that pattern uncomfortable in hand during use. I gave them away, decades ago.) The only 3 blade knives I know of that don't have kinked blades, are the three spring 3 blade stockman by Buck (301/303/371/373), the 3 spring stockman made by Case, and the Split Spring Whittler, which has the primary blade hinged on one end, with the two secondary blades pivoted on the other, one on each side of the primary blade. Some single spring two blade knives have the blades kinked, ground, or both. Kinking blades goes back a long ways. President Abe Lincoln's 6 blade Congress pattern has kinked blades.

I'd have to agree with the can opener. Part of the problem with the Vic, is you need to get used to pushing it forward instead of going backwards. I've seen experts with the Vic slice open a can in mere seconds. I'm not that guy. Of course, my most used portable can opener is my P38 but second in line is the safety can opener found on knives like the Camillus. No muss, no fuss, and safe!

I can't make my mind up about this knife, it's one of those that you don't have the highest expectations of when ordering but can be pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised with when you get it. From a user perspective I would say save your money and get an RR or Marbles Scout knife or a medium Victorinox instead. No, no Ebay knife sales in the UK, you have to search a little bit harder for vintage knives here but they're out there.

Get it. You will not regret. It comes with a sharp edge, there may be some fit issues, but for the price... Its worth it! I just got one on ebay for US$ 5:30. There are a couple of mods: I took the etching off with 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper, then polished with Brasso. ( Do you have that over there?) I also filed a down (about one mm) a bit of the lower jaw of the bottle opener. Mine was a bit narrow. (Just go by trial and error.) In return you get a tough chunky knife, a nice conversation piece, and a little custom project... All for less than what you would pay for coffee in some places.
