I was running through Jeepster on my guitar and my 20 year old son, who had no idea what I was playing, says "Dad, that's a great riff!" Marc Bolan is still gaining new fans !

i am an american and i can tell you i loved marc bolan and trex as much as any other person on this planet. many american kids did. i fought like hell to get all of his albums and it was hard to do because america didn't make it that easy. i went to another plane of existance with him and never came back. i loved him then and i love him now more than 50 fucking years later.

Yeah, I guess it must have been difficult over there acquiring Marc's records, he never quite ascended the heights like he did here and in turn the U.S. record companies didn't see it worthwhile releasing his music. The very first record I bought was Hot Love and the 70's was all about Marc & T. Rex, being a teenager and all the youthful freedom of growing up remains in your heart and, yes, 50 odd years later, Marc is still very much a part of me, and a part of you, and for many always will be.

Late Summer/Autumn of 1977 was a very sad time. We lost Elvis Presley, Marc Bolan and Bing Crosby, and i believe Maria Callas who was a very fine opera singer. Marc Bolan was superb. Very much missed.

Marc Bolan is the man. Shame most Americans, apart from a few that are switched on, still have no idea how great he was. His music and style were too soon for them at the time. Anyway, who needs America to qualify anything? Bolan was a big star and still is for most of us in the civilised world.
@starchainedheart9854

He didn't translate well in America. The timing had a lot to do with it. We were too bogged down in Vietnam and Nixon to be interested in what he was selling. There are so many reasons why he didn't crack the US market, this being the backdrop against it all. But overall, it wasn't just him. Glam didn't really take hold here in any mainstream way. Americans are a bit slow to accept dudes wearing eyeliner and prancing about. I discovered Bolan's music quite by accident in 1972 and took to it immediately. There being no internet or media exposure at the time, I didn't know anything about him though. I just assumed he was this wonderful indie freak artist, and I was his only fan. It's not like I had any evidence to the contrary.

this is a totally unfair and inaccurate statement. i am an american and i loved him and his music madly. you can't speak for a whole nation of people. you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. i loved him 50 years ago probibly before you were even born. stop talking shit about americans. we loved him too.

You might have loved Marc, but he never broke big in America apart from his one hit. That 's a fact.
@starchainedheart9854

@@annwhite2346, and that is important exactly why? America's seal of approval isn't everything, you know. Many great British and European artists never made the leap across the pond. It says nothing about their talent and appeal. But it might say something about their marketing and cultural fit for the US at that time. We were so deep in Vietnam, Nixon, and so much political turmoil during the early 70s. What Bolan was selling was beyond America's comprehension. Much of that would turn around in the late 90s as a whole new generation of Americans discovered Bolan's music thanks to the internet and several blockbuster films.
